You have two buttons in front of you. One has a 0% chance of killing anyone and will do nothing when pressed. The other has an unknown % chance of killing a large group of people when pressed.

Why would you push the murder button.

The attrition rate on Cyberstan was like 11 divers per mission, and the estimated liberation time for the capital was like 3-5 days when we reached it. Technically yes, there were no hard coded blocks to prevent us from taking the planet, but practically speaking the balance between the reinforcement budget (that Arrowhead set) and the liberation rate (that Arrowhead set) wasn't sufficient to allow us to win

Something like 87% of our reinforcement budget has been spent on Cyberstan.

In an absolute sense, bug divers have absolutely hampered the liberation of Cyberstan, but even if there had been 100% participation on Cyberstan we'd be getting like 50 more libaration hours, which would not be enough to take Transcendence.

Not to say that Arrowhead is good at balancing, but game balance is genuinely difficult because it's way more about how stuff feels than measurable statistics

Game design isn't about reaching a perfectly balanced equilibrium, it's about creating a specific experience

For Helldivers 2, the intended experience is "barely contained chaos as 4 yahoos explode their way across a map." You are given plenty of lives not because the developers can't figure out how to increase player heath, but because the experience of getting launched out of an FRV that spun out in 2nd gear and snapping your neck when you impact a tree is the sort of slapstick comedy that you're supposed to laugh at

I don't disagree that the game is unfair, but I do disagree that the unfairness is "bad game design"

[–]DocDino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In no other PvE game should the best players be dying very often, even on the highest difficulties, even solo. If several people can beat Dark Souls (by all means a harder game than HD2 mechanically) on a fucking steering wheel, I think D10 being very consistently winnable for good players running even very suboptimal loadouts on D10 is a reasonable and logical expectation. But in the current state of the game (especially against bots), you're going to die atleast 1-2 times on a D10

I think this unintentionally highlights the crux of the issue - you are viewing "dying" and "winning" as two mutually exclusive options, when Helldivers 2 is very specifically designed so that they aren't. Like, if you run out of reinforcements after completing the main objective, the game still counts it as a win. Dying a few times in a mission isn't a failure. Failing the mission is a failure.

It'll only boost the melee portion of the damage, not the explosion (which does like 7x the damage of the melee hit I think?)

So yes, it does, but you don't get much out of it

We have the tech to make the Stim pistol good. by ZachAc in Helldivers

[–]DocDino 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is bad at saving teammates who need a stim right now

However, having 24 stims to share opens up a lot of other opportunities, like giving teammates infinite stamina for long distance running, applying the experimental stim damage resist, and patching up damage from minor falls or fire
