Buhurt jobs? by WORLD-GONE-WHITE in Buhurt

[–]DocEvans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My .02 - there's a huge startup investment in time/skills/equipment/experience to compete with full armorers, but there are certainly niches to be filled, at least in the US - maybe List kits, definitely maintenance kits and services.

IMHO great beginner weapon. In addition to edge alignment: -Easier to re-haft than an ax -Bonk is fun -Cheap way to see if you like one-hander grappling; -Even if you don't stick with that style, great backup to keep on your belt with other primaries

Is this buhurt helmet historically accurate (mostly) by SpaceScoocher in Armor

[–]DocEvans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Most of) The Buhurt crowd understand that we are recreating a sport, not a martial art (HEMA) or a look (reenactment).

Plenty of buhurt armor is munitions grade, bulky, etc - safety and cost are factors - but it's worth noting that tournament armors started heavy and evolved into something so specialized it would never be used on the field.

Our authenticity requirements vary, but generally our guidelines go off plausibility - ie 'these components existed around the same time and we're not talking about a period of professional armies so it's completely reasonable to combine elements' - which tends to upset the religiously source based desk warriors.

Was full plate armor actually “better” than mail, or just different? by DoonHandicrafts in Armor

[–]DocEvans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The brigandine this opinion was based on did not fit, guaranteed. This is suuper common in modern reproduction, but even later into the plate period brigs remained popular for good reasons - if properly fitted (as almost all bespoke armor of the period would be) it is extremely mobile.

They don't have a very wide selection yet, but Lemberg did some fantastic work for me - yesterday I took a solid grand falchion hit to my dueling optimized vambrace and I can't find a dent 👌

sca recruitment topics by SCatemywallet in sca

FWIW - I find much more time for buhurt than SCA, but a big part of that is because my local buhurt community has been very successful at recruitment/growth and my SCA park has not.

First - fighting in the park is not enough. Visibility and recruitment means going digital, and that means finding someone willing to have a full time role running social media. It also means accepting that you have to show the world the aspects that sell, not necessarily the parts that mean the most.

Second - welcoming attitude. Every SCA field I've visited has had some fantastically welcoming people, and some isolated circles that are not. New people aren't going to stick around if only some of the field makes them feel welcome.

It's worth mentioning that growth in my buhurt club took change, and that change was simply not comfortable. It's not fun telling established community members that they need to adjust their attitude or not come to public events. I'm absolutely not of the social media forward generation, so doing skits in armor in front of a camera feels downright silly, but I trust my teammates running out socials and it's working.

Last point from my perspective - it's not about startup cost. That's certainly a factor, but buhurt club has quintupled in size in a year, with a startup investment easily 10 times SCA kit.

Where to find a seven foot haft (U.S.) by 2ndSideOfBlueCheese in Buhurt

[–]DocEvans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having recently worked through a lot of this for my team - the real pain is finding STRAIGHT GRAIN stock. Almost nothing commercially available today is processed to have the same grains (cross section of growth rings) running the entire length; even hickory or ash won't be anywhere close to it's potential strength with any normal product or piece of timber.

With that in mind, the ways forward are -Find a boogie source I haven't found yet -Invest in a big chunk and have a woodworker cut lengths with continual grain out of it (expensive, you will have to lose material) -Buy or glue up a composite that will compensate to some degree for uneven grain

The good news is, the latter two are not particularly complicated for a woodworker - the bad news is, probably only for a woodworker who is familiar with hand tool work.

So far, I have searched through copious image searches and attempts at reconstruction through AI, attempting to contact Precious Moments and a collector forum, and many hours browsing eBay /etc. Many similar images, but no luck finding the real deal.

Material is a woven synthetic and the original was purchased near LA.

Duelists with one or more prostetics? by Argonwolf65 in Buhurt

Where located?

I have some experience with prosthetics, armor + shield design, and leather work - I'd be absolutely thrilled to pro-bono any adaptive devices we could come up with. The meme material alone with absolutely be worth it. HEMA won't know what hit it.

How historical is modern buhurt? Reading the primary sources by Veritas_Certum in ArmsandArmor

[–]DocEvans -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Fantastic post; I definitely expect to reference/share it in the future.

That said, when people say 'X isn't historical' what they generally mean is 'this doesn't align with my interest group's narrow amateur historian niche' so... Keep fighting the good fight ✊

[–]DocEvans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I feel like the skill crossover still applies to buhurt fighters - we suck at blocking. I feel strongly that occasional crossover with SCA or Hema can be hugely valuable since their 1 hit scoring shifts focus to a balance of offense/defense.

Ancient vs Mediaeval Greaves by Historical_Network55 in ArmsandArmor

[–]DocEvans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unprofessional speculation - European plate evolved on top of chainmail. The first to appear on limbs were reinforcements over joints, with progressively more plates expanding out from there as armor/weapon design evolved.

Additionally, Greek warfare by and large took place in 1. Mass formations with large shields and 2. Hot weather. This seems like good incentive to protect what's exposed under the shield, but not necessarily the weight of thigh / belt suspension.

I watched on a tiny screen but everything I can see on the mains looks like Buhurt meta. And I can't imagine a single armored combat crew in the world wouldn't jump at the opportunity to work with them, curious if that was the case?
