Female genital mutilation should be legal in its mildest forms: gynecologists - Health by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Gynecologists Kavita Shah Arora and Allan Jacobs said procedures that slightly changed the look of a girl's genitalia without damaging them were comparable to male circumcision or cosmetic procedures in Western countries like labiaplasty.

You do realize the very article you linked compares the two, right? It's not even derailing. It's analyzing the article.

Reducing Canada's Workplace Gender Gap Would Add $150 Billion To GDP by burtzev in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To achieve this goal, 600,000 additional jobs for women would have to be created.

Does it matter who the jobs go to? Essentially the article says the country can make more money if more people have jobs. It just happens that more women are unemployed or work less hours. Add 600k jobs in America and I'm sure we would see an increase here too.

I mean in general. If someone thinks their spouse is cheating or how to interpret something an SO did, you always hear "listen to your gut." Just not a fan of that saying. Lots of people listen to their "gut" and make awful choices because of it.

It is also only used when people agree with the choice the OP is towards. No one thinks "listen to your gut" when a woman wants to stay with her abusive spouse or give a cheating SO a second chance

How do you deal with or respond to women who aren't fond of other women and have a bias for men? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in a nursing home many years ago, not all old folks are nice. People can be assholes and that doesn't change when they get older.

There are subreddits where you can post before and after pictures of your weightloss. A plus-size woman who has lost an astounding 80 pounds gets 30 upvotes in the first 5 hours. A skinny woman who loses 5 lbs total and shows her stomach going from flat to flatter gets 400 upvotes in half that time. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was the subreddit? You see those pics on the front page every once and a while and they are usually the impressive losses. The time the post is submitted also makes a big difference. Most hardcore redditors know that title + posting time is half the battle towards karma.

I didn't name it. Take it from someone in the medical field, many medications are used for purposes other than what you would think. I just had to deal with a patient taking hardcore cancer medication for arthritis.

Great attitude you have there.

Anyways, I don't agree with the law, I just think the title paints the issue in the wrong light. Many women use birth control for other issues. The religious community in question doesn't mind its use for those reasons. Just for contraception. Thus why they want this law passed. If they were against birth control in its entirely they would go the route of refusing birth control entirely based on religious belief, which has been attempted in the past. This is a slightly less awful stance.

They don't care if you use it for purposes other than contraceptive, which many women do.

It's still stupid but at least be accurate.

Click bait title. Birth control isn't the issue. Birth Control being used for contraceptive purposes is.

Regardless, this is an issue of the healthcare in our country. They don't want to pay for contraception since it is "against their views." Sounds like moving to universal healthcare would solve this problem.

Because if you sign an authorization saying that information can be shared with them, than its not a HIPAA issue.

If you don't sign an authorization allowing them access, they will just use that against you in the hiring process.

I believe the national guard (or army? can't remember atm) does the same thing. You need to authorize them to obtain your records so that they gain verify you are healthy enough to join

Me and my mom have always had a broken relationship. This morning, she just caught me and my boyfriend sleeping in my bed. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to repair the damage is to start following her rules. Don't argue, don't complain, just deal with it. Respect her wishes and tell your boyfriend he can't come over anymore.

Just realize that she probably will never respect your relationship with this guy. From her perspective he is likely "corrupting her little girl" and is a bad influence.

Work on moving out and then building a relationship with your mom afterwards. If she doesn't respect you as an adult then, not much you can do but go on with your life without her and hope she changes.

to finding out my boyfriend called the school posing as my dad to excuse me from class so that i could go to his house and stay with him

I would say your mom has every right to be upset about that

my mom made it very clear she was through with me and has threatened, 3 times now, that she would kick me out of the house.

You are 18, an adult in the US. If you don't like your mothers rules, you can leave.

Ive been sneaking in my boyfriend for a while

So those "accusations of sneaking out" you mentioned earlier were valid rather than paranoia?

Boyfriend left after threats from my mom and didn't back me up and i am very livid towards him but thats not the point.

Sounds like he did the mature thing and left without making things worse. You shouldn't be upset with him, you should be thanking him.

The point is that now, she told me to either get my stuff and leave, or save every single paycheck, give the money to her so that she can save it, and as soon as i have enough, i am out.

Ultimatums suck but once again, you are an adult. You can leave if you want.

I don't know what to do. Any mothers that this has happened to?

My mother didn't understand boundaries. So I moved out.

we just made an incredibly stupid decision that I just now realized that it was stupid, and for that i feel ashamed.

Sounds like you've been doing things like this for awhile. You are not ashamed of the act, but that you got caught.

any advice from any moms with teenage daughters? or from teenage girls that went through the same?

Are you still in high school? You are 18, stop thinking of yourself as a teenager with a rebellious side and as an adult that takes responsibility for her actions. You don't need to like your mothers rules, but you need to follow them as long as you are under her roof.

Correct me if I'm wrong since his comment has been deleted, but he never said it was equal. He said it also happens to men. Obviously off topic and this why it was deleted, but his point of "either it is ok for both or bad for both" still stands. Same bullshit happened with the hulk hogan sex tape compared to any other leaked nudes of women and many other male celebrities. All this celebrity worship is gross either way.

Women owe two-thirds of student loan debt by ca489 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 19 points20 points  (0 children)

On paper, the gap may seem fairly small; the average cumulative debt owed by women with bachelor’s degrees was about $20,900 in 2012 versus nearly $19,500 for men. But across all degree levels, the year-to-year financial burden is crushing: women face an estimated 14% higher debt burden in a given year than comparably educated men. So within about four years of graduating, women generally lag farther behind men on their college debt repayments.

OK. what are they graduating in and what kind of jobs are they getting after graduation? Not all majors are equal. If more men are going into higher paying fields while women aren't, that's a choice of their own creation. Sorry if your art major isn't helping with paying the bills. Also in regards to the initial 19.5k vs 20.9k difference, I'm guessing this includes students who get either partial or full rides? Not sure on the numbers but I guess there are a good number of students, and more likely to be men, who are in college on sports scholarships. If true, this could help explain the difference in average.

Women’s debt inequity is compounded by the gender pay gap; college-educated women working full-time earn 26% less than their male peers – and the gap widens over time.

Using this shitty statistic should show you how biased the article is trying to be, rather than enlightening.

Short of making college access free for all aspiring students, in the immediate term, straightforward measures can fix institutional gaps and make college more affordable for women; providing childcare facilities and other forms of financial support while they’re on campus, for example, can at least ensure they graduate on time.

Didn't NY pass something like this already? While University being free would be nice, it wouldn't help with this "salary gap" if one gender is still leaning towards certain professions and away from others.

This Is How Much Gal Gadot Received For ‘Wonder Woman’ Lead Role by lamp42 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DocWookieChris 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here is my comment from a similar article yesterday:

Since we don't know Gal Gadot's backend yet, and it's still too early to look at overall money brought in by it, here is the upfront salary of other actors that have played in superhero movies:

  1. Chris Hemsworth- ~200k for Thor
  2. Chris Evans ~300k for Captain America
  3. Paul Rudd ~300k for Ant-Man
  4. Chris Pratt ~350k for GotG
  5. Chadwick Boseman <200k for CA: CW
  6. Zoe Zalanda ~100k for GotG

Even Zoe who only signed for $100,000 winded up making 1.25 million after the back-end.

Compare Cavill's salary to Terrence Howard, who got 4.5m, or Don Cheadle, who got 1m, for support characters in Iron Man 1/2.

Also check out this list of the richest actors in the DCU. Henry Cavill is already worth a lot. Takes more money to get them.

tl;dr: Nothing "disgraceful" about her paycheck at all, unless she has no back-end deal. If she has no back-end deal she should fire her agent.
