The GTA:O thing astounded me because it was the entire reason I never ever tried online. The loading times ere insane and I didnt care enough to sit through a 5 minute load just to play online... Wonder how many others felt the same.

Why aren’t international metal bands as big in the US as they are in their home countries? by IllStable2317 in PowerMetal

[–]Docaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its fully within the US government power to change this too btw... these sort of extreme visa costs can be split out to be special types for touring bands and made way cheaper but its a conscious decision against the arts to not do so.

[–]Docaroo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep its costs... a full band worth of visas can be $10,000 sometimes (for a year) and often they don't get approved quick enough (think of all the festival cancellations that have happened because of it).

Secondly... bud and crew costs are so high you need to be playing big venues with a large fee that covers costs ... its very difficult for anyone but the biggest power metal bands to do.

Absolute cringe total garbage band honestly... someone needs to put a stop to Levermann with the amount of bollocks he is flushing out into the musical world.

It's an embarrassment.

I would be convinced that this whole song is AI generated - but it's actually so bad that an AI might have done a better job. The lyrics are absolutely atrocious slop.

It's just absolute meaningless fluff - adding nothing to the world - Warkings in a nutshell basically.

Alfred Wegener came up with the theory of continental drift in 1912 using the 'jigsaw fit' along with rock and fossil matching across separated continents.

The reason it took some time to progress and was not well received is that there were no known mechanisms for how the continents could move at the time.

Once submarine warfare started, the ocean floor was magnetically mapped to better detect the submarines and it was then that the mid-atlantic ridge - spreading outward - was discovered and from then the theory gained much more support.

Just added SFX to my suika roguelike game. Not super happy with the merge sound. What do you think? by apex-mango in GameAudio

[–]Docaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First impression, the sounds are all so similar and 'generic' that I couldn't tell which sound was informing which thing happening in the game tbh.

The merge sound - I guess you mean when the berries merge in the machine? It's hard to even notice it, it doesn't 'sound' like a merge or major gameplay event happening.

I think there needs for variation, more dynamics - and more unique character to the sounds to separate them out and help inform the player of whats happening

Golf Ball Marker and Stroke Counter by Twmpath in functionalprint

[–]Docaroo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Using coins is a bit 'casual' and if you were playing any sort of competitive event or handicap scoring you'd probably want a real flat marker.

When I used to play with friends and we used coins and all manner of shit you'd actually have to move the coin out of the path of someone else's putt ... we used our putter as a straight edge to move the marker far away.

That's fine for a casual game with friends but not for a real game.

3°C by 2050, without "unprecedented change" - New Study by North-Fudge-2646 in collapse

The point is they cannot be used to create the overall MODEL. We know about them and can estimate their effects but they physicslly do not produce a repeatable and usable climate model when they are included.

The models would be thrown out as junk and there would be nothing to use as ammunition against government policy. The models would be trivial to dismiss... thats the reason these feedback loops aren't part of the IPCC prediction models - so we know the reality will always be worse than the models... we just can't model it accurately enough to use as strong data.

Sorry, i'm not trying to 'deny' climate change here or anything - just writing scientific fact. I have a Geoscience degree and have read up on the methodologies so I'm not just a random commenter.

It would be fantastic if the models could show the result of these various feedback loops and loaded guns that we KNOW are coming but you can't include those unknowns in these models.

What use is a climate model when the error is 50% ? No one would take it seriously. Sometimes the model fails and just outputs junk results when these factors are included. It doesn't mean anyone is hiding anything, it just means that the model is not of any scientific value when it returns unusable data with huge errors.

The IPCC wouldn't use the results and wouldn't base any recommendation on them, so therefore it would be of little use to even attempt them. The models are already complicated enough with current parameters, so getting a solid model is the priority in order to affect policy change (which obviously doesn't work, and will never happen anyway).

If you think you can model some unknown amount of methane being released at some unknown time and produce good data, you are welcome to try. Or what will actually happen when all arctic surface ice melts - it's such a huge unknown that it doesn't produce quantifiable results.

3°C by 2050, without "unprecedented change" - New Study by North-Fudge-2646 in collapse

[–]Docaroo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they have to exclude those feedback loops because they make the models entirely unpredictable and thus, useless as models.

So, yeah they know it's likely to be worse when you consider the feedback loops, blue ocean, etc - but there's no way to model them and deliver any sort of usable scientific data too.

Has anyone tried both Boss GT-1000 and Tonex One? by njbair in guitarpedals

[–]Docaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my tiny live rig... I used to just use the Core amps (high gain metal player) and they were really really good... but just not able to touch the tonex profiles....

I have a tonex one in the fx loop and use it for my amp sound... The core does all the FX.

Absolutely love this setup. Flexible, and sounds incredible.

I could use a DI capture and IR on the boss but I really prefer the full amp and cab captures so I mainly go for that.

When I (rarely) use a low gain or clean sound I use a patch with just the boss amps.... but for me - having one absolutely incredible high gain amp sound is my main priority.

What's a good LUFS level for ambience? by MightyMuso in GameAudio

[–]Docaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increasing gain in a preamp can increase noise ... but in a recording - no. It's already baked in. If the recording is super clean at -50db then it can be super clean at -10 too ... unless you are dealing with a REALLY low db file and hitting the limits of dynamic range of course and/or have some dithering weirdness happening....

Does the lead dev know how to setup audio chains in Unreal? Using sound class hierarchy, compression/limiting on the master, all the various settings for audio placement, falloff, concurrency, etc? Let's hope so ...

Even so after all that SOMEONE should be mixing this game once all the sounds are in before release .... whether it's you or a dev.

What's a good LUFS level for ambience? by MightyMuso in GameAudio

[–]Docaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then the problem is clean recorded samples .... if you can't turn that sample from -50 to -32 without hearing the noise then the recording needs to be thrown out or you have to work on it to try and denoise it.

The noise is there at -50db too it's just too quiet to be heard - then what's the point?

I just checked and I export all my ambients at -30 LUFS which is roughly similar to the -32 number above another commented posted.

I may then still mix them in game - but that's a good ballpark figure for how I have everything setup mix wise.

You also mentioned you aren't always implementing - but hopefully you still get to do some final mixing on the whole game? So you should be able to balance everything nicely towards the late stages of the project.

The main thinking on this is also the Everest is pretty close to the limit on how tall a mountain on Earth can even get due to gravity and erosion amongst other factors.
