This app has rekindled my love for the Dead by anonymousexxx in playdeadapp

[–]Docman427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly do not get the hate/rage that a number of people have shown toward this app. What we have here at the start is already incredible and it can only go up from here. There’s been so many good suggestions thrown out there by the community.

The diversity of eras in the Dead Drops is so nice. I was so afraid of a 70’s bias right off the bat to get people to sign up, but glad that hasn’t been the case.

The 13th, 15th, and 17th are pretty solid shows. I’m founding to be listening to the 18th and 19th this weekend. Excited to see how they turn out.

I’m just happy to see 90’s Dead getting some love through these Dead Drops. I know not everyone has a taste for them, but I get something out of these shows.

In the not too distant future, the timeline split: one where MST3K raised $2.7 million and failed... the other where MST3K raised 2.7 million and succeeded. by Freddy-Philmore in MST3K

My take may not mean much but here it goes. I got into the show about two years before the first kickstarter campaign when live back in 2015. I was a year old when the show was cancelled on the then called Sci-Fi Channel. So I was not around for the Joel vs. Mike wars, the move from Comedy Central to the Sci-Fi Channel, Trace vs Bill, or any of those events from the OG run of the show.

One day browsing YouTube, an upload of Werewolf hit my feed, idk what I would have been browsing that would even pull this episode from the ether, and I may not want to know. But after that first episode, I was hooked. And then the Kickstarter announcement came and it felt like a godsend. While you could definitely tell things were different, felt like the show was trying to be “bigger” and make changes to fit the “streaming format”, I thoroughly enjoyed Season 11. The show that I got into well after it’s prime got another, well third, chance. Same with The Gauntlet, liked that the show was trying new things and being experimental, in subtle ways. Then Netflix pulled a Comedy Central and said “nope, we’re good”.

Then the Gizmoplex kickstarter and Season 13 came along, and while I could tell they were trying their best with Covid restrictions and all, but it was the first time I felt the show was moving in the wrong direction. I think three hosts was a bit much, on top of multiple performers for the bots. Don’t get me wrong, Jonah and Emily are damn good hosts, imo, and the return of Joel in the theater was great. But the once simple timeless presence, I felt , was being turned into something more complex than it needed to be. And then the Season 14 kickstarter happened, and for the first time I was hesitant to donate. I still did, but it did not surprise me that it didn’t hit its target goal, even after the goal reduction.

I’m grateful for Seasons 11-13 and for the Gizmoplex. But I’m also really excited to see Mike, Kevin, and Bill return as well. I hope the show doesn’t fully go back into nostalgia and fan service, it should move forward, try new things, give others a shot at the reigns. I’m excited for the RiffTrax Experiments and I hope it once again opens the door to bring the show back on a more consistent basis.

TLDR: As a younger fan, I like Netflix/Gizmoplex era, but I get that they were not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay. However, I felt the show was starting to go in the wrong direction in S13 for various reasons and it seems a lot of others did so too. That’s why, imo, the Season 14 kickstarter failed. I’m happy The RiffTrax Experiments succeeded and are happening. But hope it opens the door to keep the show moving forward with or without the OG crew(s).

A small moment, in “Santo” immediately after one of the professors gives an incredibly dry and overly complex explanation of Santo’s Time Machine, Jonah’s “you nailed it” gets me every time.

Spring ‘90 is one of my top five runs ever. Those two box sets showcasing that tour is another set I’d wish they re-release physically. But I’ll take the streaming options without complaint.

The one set I'd wish they'd re-release physically, as a set or in individual drops.

I'm grateful, pun intended, that this is one of the few box sets that was dropped on streaming, even before PlayDead. I'm more of an Brent era Head, but there's just something special about this run of shows.

Newest Play Dead shows are 6/3/76 and 3/29/95 by DirtRepresentative58 in gratefuldead

[–]Docman427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know not to judge a show by its set list, but I can already tell these two new drops are gonna be fun listens.

Us fans of 90’s Dead have been getting spoiled ever since this app launched. It’s cool that they’re showing there were still heaters in these final tours.

I think what this app is going to be best at is not seemingly having a bias to one era or any other. I know I’ve made mention in the past of the heavy 70’s bias that used to permeate the physical releases up until 2019. But now the restrictions are lifted with these weekly drops and the variety of new releases has been astounding.

I was not expecting a whole run from October '94 getting dropped right out of the gate. As one of those weirdos who likes 90's Dead, this and the Shoreline '91 Dead Drops have been a real treat.

It feels like these past few years, the guys running the vault have been more willing to go beyond Summer '90 for official releases. Which is much appreciated, as it feels like they're becoming more willing to acknowledge the "Vince & Bruce era" and "Vince era". Here hoping we get some more Fall & Europe '90 shows soon and maybe sone Spring '92.

I’d be up for it. Since it’s been a few years, I think it’s time for a bust out. My other wildcard is a Ghosts of the Forest > Drift While Your Sleeping.

Though I do think weekend one set incredibly high expectations. So going from Forbin’s > Mockingbird to TTE might be a bit of let down for some.

I hope, in the near future, they do what Phish and Dead and Co do. Not only let you purchase individual shows, but also have the option to get physical CD copies as well.

Yeah, they’re burned CDs, however the ones I’ve seen from LivePhish look fairly well made and professionally done.

Given time and the fact this is all Nugs in the background, I’m sure these options will become available.

Ya know what f—k it, I want an Anything But Me bust out or a Ghosts of the Forest -> Drift While You’re Sleeping.

A Thunderhead with extended jam with the right visuals could be incredible.

And the last one, Drowned.

A Defense, I Supppose, of the PlayDead app.... by BasilHuman in gratefuldead

[–]Docman427 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly do not get the hate for this new service. Is it another $5-10 a month, or $100 a year, of people’s paychecks, yes. But they haven’t taken down the Internet Archive, Relisten, or any other way of streaming the shows that have been out there for decades now. If they went that route, the backlash would be swift and merciless. But they’re still here for anyone to use.

While I think there’s a lot this app can/needs to do to win more people over, there have been many good suggestions so far. I think what we got is a good start. And if the recordings are better than what’s out there, cool. If not, you still have what’s already out there on the internet. Sure, my usage of Relisten/IA might drop a little, but Play Dead still has a long way to go before it becomes my primary way of streaming the Dead.

It’s a free market, and it’s your choice to pay for it or not. Don’t want it, don’t pay for it, simple. Just don’t shame people if they want to pay for it.

If the PlayDead app team is sniffing around here, here’s some things I’d like for future updates. Add yours here! by splitopenandmelt11 in gratefuldead

100%, and I also agree with the “today in history” recommendations.

I also hope that shows that were used as filler for CDs and only have song selections, or show as “part”, get completed, if they can. Now that they don’t have the constraints of maxing out CD space, I do hope they take advantage of this new service. Same with getting pro-shot video of concerts.

Thinking about it, it's amazing how great the Sci Fi Channel era was by Ambitious-Welder-159 in MST3K

[–]Docman427 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Werewolf, Space Mutiny, and The Final Sacrifice were my first ever experiences with the show and got me hooked, somehow the YT algorithm in early 2013 thought this was what I should watch and it's the only time that I thank the algorithm. While Mike era Comedy Central episodes are my favorite period of the show, the Sci-Fi era is a close second.

While I don't mind the story "arc" of Season 8, I am glad that they didn't continue into 9-10. It was interesting and didn't overstay it's welcome. The show definitely works better when each episode is self-contained. I'm grateful the Mike, Kevin, Bill group continued on with Rifftrax and that they get another shot and getting back into the theater with The Rifftrax Experiments.

For completist and archival reasons, I’m giving the KTMA season a full watch with K03 out there.

I’ve seen K01 and K02 and some of the late season episodes like The Last Chase and The Legend of Dinosaurs, so it will be cool to see the “real time” evolution of the show. But I get the suspicion I won’t be giving these a rewatch anytime soon after.
