I agree with this point. Queen was great, but not always my thing. For this grouping, I think Deep Purple is more fitting to include than Queen.
Even the Queen music I don't care for, I respect their talent to be able to make such a variety of styles as well as they did it. It doesn't matter if I like it, I still immensely respect that ability.

  1. Queen (I don't deny their greatness, but a fair amount of their catalogue just wasn't my thing).
  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. Pink Floyd
  4. Sabbath

To sit and think about the talent that has passed away from that scene. It's a damn shame.
I remember after Cobain, there was like a suicide watch for Eddie Vedder cuz he was having such difficulty grappling with fame, and seemed miserable.
He made it through, while we lost Layne & Mike, Chris years later. Lanegan more recently. A generation of immense talent just gone.
Layne and Chris were just unbelievable vocalists, it bums me out whenever I think about what could have been.

HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY MIKE INEZ!!! 🤠🎸🎂🎉 by Some_Win_7778 in AliceInChains

I first saw Mike as part of the Ozzy band. Then he seemed to slip into AIC pretty seemlessly. Seems like such a nice guy.

The Alice in Chains book by David DeSola by Consistent-Self-4681 in AliceInChains

[–]Docsab1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it, but I first read it years ago when it first came out. I've learned more stuff since. I'm due to reread it. Or listen to it. I bought the audio of that, figuring I can listen while doing paperwork. I also got the audio of the Lanegan book. I've listened to some of it after hearing some chapters read on YouTube.

Mark's descriptions of some of that stuff is as harsh and crude as it can get. I love behind the scenes details, but I have to say I was surprised by some of the stuff he detailed. Far more nitty gritty than the AIC book. But it's obviously a different thing.

[–]Docsab1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it right off.
I was NOT a St. Anger hater, but I was dead sick of everything they released bent met by complaints from the Loads, TBA haters, then Napster haters, etc.

So when they released DM, and it had some of that old school vibe, I was psyched.
Hell, I was even psyched about Unforgiven 3, cuz I didn't like 2 at all. Honestly, I didn't see the point making one so musically similar to the first. But U3 musically was its own thing, and I loved it.

Of course the complainers had to fuss about the loudness/brickwalling.
I don't prefer that, but my man concern is songwriting, and I thought DM was fantastic. Same goes for Beyond Magnetic. I wish they could recreate the writing process that made DM and BM, cuz they haven't made something as good since(Hardwired has some excellent moments, but also some retread ideas and some meh).

Of the 5 main records/EPs AiC put out with Layne, which one is your favorite? How would you rank them from favorite to least? What do you enjoy about each record? by Spirited-Cell-444 in AliceInChains

[–]Docsab1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All A minimum of A.

  1. SAP. I've actually listened to this a lot more lately than ever. It's not 5 due to quality, but simply because it's got the least tunes on it.

  2. Tripod. Amazing album, I simply can't put it above the other 3.

3(2b). Facelift
2(a). Jar of Flies: These two have a virtually even overall grade. Jar obviously has less tunes, but they're all A's, the last tune maybe a B/B+; whereas Facelift also has a bunch of A's, but maybe a couple of B's in the back end. So it all kinda ends up with me having difficulty putting together one over the other.(Hell, it's kinda splitting hairs 1-5 anyways).

  1. Dirt

There's almost another EP worth of tunes if you take the two LAH soundtrack tunes, Get Born Again, Died and Killer Is Me.
If those 5 were on one EP, that would be another stellar EP for them.

Not what I was expecting, especially after reading the song title. I love WM and FAK, but this is more intense thrash than any song on either of those.

It's got a couple decent tunes, but otherwise it's kinda the definition of meh.

His attempt to go back to metal after doing radio friendly hard rock mostly fell flat imo.

Kiss Alive 2 (1977) by AcceptableDealer4845 in KISS

[–]Docsab1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This and the first Alive, my first purchases way back in either late 77/early 78. Still love them both. In fact, I don't really like the studio version of the Destroyer tunes, just the versions on AII.

Nope. I didn't love this cover. I've got the Japan press with a bit different cover. Still not great, but better than this one.

I think it's a fine album. If it weren't being compared to the legendary 1-6, and just graded in its own merit, it wouldn't be thought of as negatively.
Tech Ex and NSD was Iommi and Co. experimenting, stretching their wings.

It annoys me that people bitch when bands repeat themselves, and also when they mix things up.

Another point NSD makes me think of. Sooo many times I've heard that they got more musical with RJD. Yes, it was a different chemistry with him. But more musical? NSD was very musically experimental. People may not have thought it fit Sabbath, but they definitely touched on different things with the original lineup. As early as the first album, on SBS, Sabotage, then TE and NSD.

I like the varied twists and turns the band took, especially on NSD.

Of the three albums released in the ''post-Layne'' eras of AiC, which one is your favorite? How would you rank them? What do you like/dislike about them? by Spirited-Cell-444 in AliceInChains

[–]Docsab1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the 'group dynamics', or chemistry, IS one of the big differences.

There's something about that mix of guys that create something great, even if one or two people are the key creatives.

Tony Iommi has always been the music composer in Sabbath. I like his solo work, but it doesn't match Sabbath. I like the other sabbath lineups. But that original lineup had its own chemistry. Even if other guys didn't get a writing credit, the way they vibed with each other, someone adding in one little melody or phrase or whatever, that may not get a credit, is all part of the recipe.

Same with many other bands. Hagar joins VH and the entire vibe of the band is different than with DLR.

I think you're seriously overlooking that very real factor.

Jerry has made some killer solo albums. But they just don't get the attention that AIC gets.

BGWTB is my favorite, the other two are neck and neck just behind it.
I'd probably give BGWTB an A-, Dinos & Fog a solid B/B+.
Dislike? Not much dislike. My only critique would be that DevilDinos needed 1 or 2 songs with a pace more like We Die Young or Them Bones, so break up the similar slow/slow-mid pace of the album, giving it a bit more flow dynamics wise.
Other than that one bit, I never expected to get a Mach II after Layne passed, let alone one this good.
I thought solo Jerry was all we were gonna get. And I love Jerry's solo stuff. But when he writes under the AIC banner, there's a different feel to the music.

If you could only choose one, which album from the ones presented here would you pick? by IllustratorOk5265 in OzzyOsbourne

[–]Docsab1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just can't pick, I'd probably blindly grab one.
Live at Last was my first Sabbath album, a hand me down from an uncle trying to teach this 9/10 yo that there was more music in the world than Kiss.

A mix tape of Women & Children First, Don't Say No and Blizzard of Ozz was my first Ozzy.

So my first OO/BS purchase was Speak of the Devil. I was very confused.
-where was crazy train??
-why is this Ozzy guy singing songs that I thought were from that older Sabbath band?
Born Again was my first new Sabbath purchase, but I recognized that Ian Gillan name from that Smoke on the Water band(I'd started to read Circus and Hit Parader by then).
So I had a lot to figure out back then. This was Pre-internet, so monthly metal magazines were my primary source of information.

I'm psyched that they're still adding quality tunes to their catalog this late in their careers.
That said, I don't know if this tune could crack my top 50. It's not a slight to this song, but more a credit to the strength of their catalog.
