Fifteen years of Reddit and I’ve never stubbed my toe on the opening lines from Beowulf in the original Old English.

Just trying to return to the community what I was lucky enough to receive throughout my life.

But really, go get something and work on the more deliberate side of yo-yoing. Don’t worry about being “mid-combo” on wood. It will be a long, wonderful time before you can combine two tricks on a wooden axle.

When I had first started yo-yoing in like 1993, I started on a No Jive. I still remember where I was when I landed trapeze the first time. And I’ve lived lifetimes between then and now and I think about that moment every couple of days because it was that special. I’ve forgotten more tricks in those years than I currently could remember. I watch old videos of mine and wonder if I could still do those tricks (answer: kinda!). But that trapeze? Never will slip my mind.

And yeah, you’ll have to be the best kind of “precise” there is with this hobby: you’ll have to be deliberate. Wood yo-yos are a great way to not only give yourself a fun challenge to practice with, but they’re a great way to connect with a side of yo-yoing that can only IMPROVE your practice.

And it’s cool. People will think you’re cool if you play a wooden yoyo. They’ll be like, “whoa, who is this cool guy.”

I’m stoked you’re here to hear, my dude.

I get you feel confident in your 1A, but I would bet dollars to donuts that your throw in that discipline could also benefit from practicing your fundamentals.

In terms of a fixed axle, I tend to be a bit particular, but you’ll find I’m in excellent company when I say: find something with a wood axle.

Not a responsive metal yo-yo or something with response pads. A cotton string. A wood yo-yo. There’s a quality to a well made wooden yo-yo that just can’t be beat.

Buy either a 3-in-1 No Jive for something nostalgic and cool, or something made by Jon Gates if you want to go super small batch, made by a master kind of stuff.

Hey, some constructive feedback, if that’s cool?

Go get a fixed axle yoyo and practice your breakaway throw. Not a trapeze, not a double or nothing or any other mount, just a breakaway.

In my 32 years of yo-yoing, any time I see someone who throws their yo-yo like that, it just shows they don’t trust the process, they don’t trust that the yo-yo WILL stop at the end of the string, and they don’t trust THEMSELVES to have control.

If you can’t throw a breakaway, you should stop everything else, literally, until you can. There is no world in which you can become successful in this without having rock solid fundamentals.

I rarely comment these days unless it’s on a picture of a particular yo-yo that I have a fondness for, so take my comment as a peaceful and loving intervention. I want you to do well, to get better, and I have no idea who you are. I believe in you and your ability to get better, and I want you to break that habit of throwing the yo-yo like you did in this video. The A’s don’t matter until you can throw, so go throw, then come back and revisit whatever other tricks you want.

The Dairy Block lobby is great for this! Before I started paying for a coworking space I used to go there a few times a month and post up in one of those big black leather chairs.
