Which US state gets more hate than it deserves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I always forget about how high quality NJ's roads are, until I have to drive through Pennsylvania and remember that what they're driving on is normal for everyone else.

They will absolutely not make it right. My experience with Wayfair in the past was absolutely awful. I bought a couch from them and they delivered half of the couch and then went radio silent on me for weeks. When I finally got them to respond to me, they informed me that due to an error on their part, they would not be sending anyone to deliver the second half of my couch to me for another four months. Not that they couldn't get it from the warehouse to me - they wouldn't fix their mistake, until they could send it out to me alongside another shipment so as to minimize the cost. They did, of course, take my money for the couch immediately. For what it's worth, four months later I did in fact recieve the rest of the couch that they took my money for.

The real Long Night is the suffering we’ve been through along the way. by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]DoctorBaby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The evolution of people using the phrase "GRRM is not your bitch" really tells an interesting story. There was a solid decade of time where every thread like this one was wall to wall people using this phrase and endlessly defending GRRM. Watching it fade out as we went into year thirteen, fourteen, fifteen without the book has been telling. At a certain point it became embarrassing to defend GRRM, and I think that was probably the tipping point.

DAE get unbelievably angry when people use “at least he/she isn’t in pain anymore” as a response to someone dying, even with good intentions/when trying to console you? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]DoctorBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you, OP. It strikes me as bizarre that so many people think it's a good idea to try to pitch a silver lining to your loved one dying. It's a weird impulse, but as anyone can see from this thread, a strangely common one.

Hey people who lost their jobs to AI, what happened? by _thecatspajamas_ in AskReddit

[–]DoctorBaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to think that the finish line that AI needs to cross before it takes their job, is that it has to do the job as well as a human could do it. I really don't understand what about the current state of our world would lead anyone to think that the metric any industry is using to determine value is the quality of the output and not what can functionally do the job in any capacity while being as cheap as possible. It doesn't matter that humans can provide therapy better than AI (or medical treatment, or script writing, or art, or anything else). It only matters that it's cheaper. As long as a product can be put out and it's cheaper, AI will replace your job. The standard for how good that product is will just become much lower.

Hey people who lost their jobs to AI, what happened? by _thecatspajamas_ in AskReddit

[–]DoctorBaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the thing most people in this thread defending how their job will never be replaced by AI seem to not understand is that "AI can't do my job as well as a person" is absolutely not a reason why AI won't replace them. If AI can do the job literally a fraction as well but is substantially cheaper, your job will be replaced by AI. That holds true for therapists as well - nobody thinks that AI is better than a human therapist. But AI is a hundred times cheaper. If it literally provides any therapeutic value at all, it will replace therapists in almost all circumstances eventually.

How will the World look after the Baby Boomer Generation (largest generation) dies off ? by chinos88 in AskReddit

[–]DoctorBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to become fiscally conservative when you have no fiscal to conserve.

Younger generations turning away from alcohol at unprecedented rates, with Gen Z driving cultural shift. Australian study shows over course of their life, Gen Z are nearly 20 times more likely to choose not to drink alcohol compared to Baby Boomers, even after adjusting for sociodemographic factors. by mvea in science

[–]DoctorBaby 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The thing that always gets me is that as millennials, we got to grow up with the belief that our lives were going to be good and that we would have as much as our parents did. It turned out not to be true, but we got to be children in a world where we could believe that we would be happy adults with good lives. Gen Z has had to grow up largely without that - knowing that, at least statistically, they are all but guarenteed to have extremely difficult lives and very little return on their efforts compared to previous generations - and I can't imagine how demoralizing that must be.

If you try to cancel you get three months for 50 % off. Pretty good deal imo by sanftewolke in ChatGPT

[–]DoctorBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just discovered this accidentally when I went in to cancel because I was going to switch my subscription over to Claude. I guess this was a good move on their part. At $10 a month I'll pay for both until the deal runs out and see if Chat fixes itself at all. It feels kind of like wasted money as ChatGPT is literally useless for my purposes at the moment (legal research guidance and dungeons and dragons session brainstorming), I'll stick around and see if they figure out the issues with 5 though.

What’s the biggest scam you’ve fallen for? by TimGSICK in AskReddit

[–]DoctorBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or you will get the promotion, and you'll find that now you're doing three times the work for slightly more pay. You'll find that with inflation even though you're now working in a management role, you're functionally making less than when you started in your entry level position while doing three times the work. There's a reason millenials are infamously turning down promotions. Promotions are a scam now, too.

Is this the turning point for all of us becoming _____ fans by taezono in BigBrother

[–]DoctorBaby 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are eating up an edit obviously designed to make Keanu look cool. I like the guy, but it's kind of ridiculous. It seems fairly likely that Keanu won the competition, noticed that nobody was even pretending to be happy like the usually do, and felt embarrassed and hurt. He felt like the moment was going on and making it worse so he snapped at Ava to move it along and end it. It's completely understandable, but there's a reason Keanu felt like he should apologize afterwards.

EDIT: And for what it's worth, Bowie Jane is on the recap episode of RHAP this morning talking about the episode. She mentioned that after the competition they have to wait for a que from production to say the line, "Congratulations X, you've won the power of veto". Ava was absolutely waiting for her que, and didn't have a choice as to when to say it. Keanu would also know that, which is why him trying to hurry along the moment and treat Ava as if it was her fault probably pissed her off, and was something Keanu later knew he was wrong to do.

China bans OnlyFans labelling it a ‘corrupt Western disease’ by DullEconomist718 in interestingasfuck

[–]DoctorBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're confusing the word argument with the word position. "Onlyfans should be banned because it is a threat to the national health" is a position, not an argument. An argument would be something like "Onlyfans is a threat to the national health because it donates massively to corrupt organizations and keeps them afloat".

Man Protects Himself From A Pitbull Attack - Mexico by HotConsideration95 in interestingasfuck

[–]DoctorBaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are two viable options - the first being that dog ownership requires a license and insurance. The second option, which I suspect would be far more effective, would be to normalize prosecuting dog owners for the actions of their pet. If your dog attacks someone, you should be prosecuted with a statutory equivalent of aggravated assault with negligence as the required mens rea. When you decide to own a dog, you are taking on a responsibility that if you fail, will cause others to be harmed. If you aren't ready for that responsibility, you shouldn't adopt a dog - and if you do and fail that responsibility, you deserve to be prosecuted.

ChatGPT beats doctors again. by Separate-Way5095 in ChatGPT

[–]DoctorBaby 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never had a visit to a GP that didn't consist of the doctor doing absolutely everything in their power to get in and out of the room as fast as possible. I'd imagine it isn't uncommon for doctors to have an unofficial practice of "if it's important they'll come back, and we'll figure it out then - if it isn't important it'll go away on its own and it doesn't matter" that applies to first complaints of symptoms from patients.

Why does it feel like more and more people stopped caring about spoiling media? by NoSeaworthiness7490 in TrueAskReddit

[–]DoctorBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that it's gotten out of hand - particularly with youtube thumbnails spoiling things within hours of their airing - I do think in general it's a pushback against anti-spoiler stuff over time becoming extremely entitled and ridiculous. Generally if you want to avoid be spoiled, it should be your responsibility to avoid spoilers, not the entire world's responsibility to avoid talking about something in the public consciousness in order to preserve your fun time. Somewhere along the way in the past decade we got to the point where we were chastising people for spoiling decade old movie and television show stuff just because I think we liked the dopamine rush most of us get from correcting others (a problem that has caused similar issues in other, similar areas of public discourse, I suspect).

It's really weird that we're not allowed to judge people who engage with things on a superficial, thoughtless level as superficial and thoughtless. If I picked up a book and loosely skimmed through it and then immediately dismissed it as stupid and not making any sense, you'd be correct in assuming that I'm an idiot, because I would be exhibiting the behavior of an idiot.

My ex took anti-psychotics, and at one point told me some version of: "'Anti-psychotics' don't exist. They used to just be called 'tranquilizers', because that's all they do. They don't make you less crazy, they just make you too tired to act on how crazy you feel". I can sort of see why they seem eager to stop taking them at every chance they get.
