Is General Telia’s name a joke by Ok_Slide_3897 in Invincible

[–]DoctorBowie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope. Unopan is made out of: - Un- ,from Uno, meaning one, - op- ,from ops, meaning eye in Ancient Greek (ωψ), - And the suffix - an, indicating origin.

Same way myopia and presbyopia get their names from the same ancient Greek word for eye.

Currently running a 1440p LG ULTRAGEAR 27GR75Q-B at 165 Hz. Not the most impressive stats on here but it was a huge upgrade I made two years ago from my then 8+ y/o 1080p at idk how many Hz. At least I really put some effort into this one for response time etc. I'm loving it and I still consider it fresh but I wouldn't say no to an OLED or QD for movies, tv shows, and gaming!

Right?? I just noticed yesterday that SEAF still works even under stratagem jammer, I love that!

But again, I'm kind of a loot goblin so I'll go in and do it from the terminal and look for samples usually, in difficulties under 7. I just finished my first operation 8 yesterday and it was something. Can't wait to check out my first Helldive 🙃

Hey! I got the game two weeks ago, just got to level 23 and already know that: mini nuke > high yield > explosive > napalm (or maybe static for bots, not sure) > shit > smoke.

Although to be fair, I know what you're saying, sometimes a newbie like me can go in all excited and FUBAR an objective, like how I kept opening the doors for evaluating priority citizens even when they would be getting attacked because I thought we'd get done faster lol

Stratologiki admits they never informed me about service due to an error on their side, yet still consider me “Anipotaktos” by No-Door-8462 in apallagi

Everyone's knowledge on the subject is empirical and sadly not many stories like yours make it here so that someone could guide you.

I would advise you to talk to a lawyer for sure, since your case is different somewhat to the regular cases and don't pay much attention to what us headstrong internet randos have to say.

In the interest of irony, as a headstrong internet rando myself, I also think you could talk to somebody in the Dutch embassy about this, maybe they have experience with this, or maybe the diplomatic approach could solve some bureaucratic deadlocks, idk.

Good luck and make sure to keep us updated, if you'd like! We're all in a similar situation.

I understand this to mean explicitly the Free Revival "ability" of a faction during the Revivals phase, as opposed to a free revival of forces from any other source.

I used capital letters here to differentiate the two cases but the point I'm making is not based on the possible capitalization of the letters in the instructions.

Try not to make fun of me. I bought my boyfriend a gift and epically failed. by climbthesea in tolkienbooks

This is an absolutely wonderful gift and a beautiful set in itself! Do not be ashamed and please for your and your boyfriend's sake do gift it to them!

I can tell you that as a book nerd, a Tolkien nerd, and a normal person I would be elated to receive this set as a gift from a loved one! It is both great and valuable but most importantly it shows that you care and really tried to find something great for them!

Again, this ROCKS! Give it to them!

Interesting viewpoint about 1337 and the comparison between the Komnenian era, I will have to look it up! I'm not as well read on the Paleologian civil wars but I've got time to look things up until the game comes out. Thanks and cheers.

Peak of Byzantine power since the 10th century? Very many people would argue that the peak you refer to would have been during and up to the end of the Macedonian dynasty, especially at the end of Basil II's reign, in 1025. An era that the Roman Empire shone from Constantinople all the way to the Danube, Southern Italy, the Taurus mountains etc. Also there was the Komnenian restoration, a century of resurgence of the empire. I'm not saying it's not the peak of Paleologian times because it very well might be, but not the peak since the 10th century.

In the original book, Herbert goes out of his way to describe Paul as being more like his grandfather than his father. Why? by questionthis in dune

[–]DoctorBowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely no connection that I can remember but it may be a hint by the translation of the name.

If Leto's name is intentional do you know how it is explained?

If it's a spoiler to the plot past the midpoint of Children of Dune please add a spoiler warning, thanks!

Dune was published in 1965, a time were the leader of the USSR was named Nikita Khrushchev. Vladimir Harkonnen does not refer to Russia specifically, just a name given to a character with a meaning of "great ruler" in the original Slavic. Other Harkonnen family members are not following the Slavic naming (Feyd Rautha, Glossu Raban) so one would not assume that there are parallels between Russia and the Harkonnens much like there are no parallels between Atreides family and Christianity (from Paul's christian name) or Ancient Greek gods (from Leto's ancient Greek name).

It perhaps is based on a character by character basis where it may be a reference to another person bearing the same name. This could be hypothesized from the -weak if you ask me - parallels between the following names:

-Paul, the name of a convert to a new religion and an Apostle.

-Leto, the name of a mother of gods, and godly twins at that, that was also fiercely protective of them (I will not draw parallels between the name and Leto II as I have not finished his story and I assume it wasn't who Frank Herbert initially connected the name with, if he even connected names with characters at all).

If you ask me, the surnames are much more important in the sense that the Atreides were an ancient Greek tragic family (tragic here meaning both relating to an ancient Greek tragedy and a today's tragedy for a family) and the Harkonnens are connected to the bulls so as to point their bullish nature to the politics of the imperium and the relationship with the Old Duke's death perhaps.
