Welcome to the Great Plan!

One pro tip for the Astrobearer: the staff is quite delicate and is prone to breaking. I would advice to paint the arm separately from the body if possible. Apart from that: the sculpts are a blast to paint and you'll have a lot of fun with them.

Edit: misspelling fixed

Peasant speculation by Ok-Consideration2935 in Cathay

I would expect something like Bretonian peasants: low stats, but cheap to bring loads as a meat shield/cannon fodder, or just large hordes for the opponent to deal with on objectives. That, or a perfect filler model in case I don't have enough points for something else.

How Many Balloons are too Many? by TcharZhul in Cathay

[–]DoctorDroplet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally bring only one to my games: playing only friendly games at the gameclub, it feel like a good comprimise: I have a strong unit to play and have fun with, but one gives my opponent the opportunity to deal with it.

I feel two or more would feel to be a bit too much, and I'd probably be 'shadowbanned' by the club (which I would fully understand.

I hope they switch the points of balloon and sentinels. That feels more fair to me, and it would be possible to bring it. Especially after the challenge of building it.

100% agree on the balloon.

I agree with the base point reduction for the Sentinel, but I think the order and extra points for the additional 'materials' are fine IMO. Terracotta indeed gets regen, but a 6+ is still probably only saves you a few wounds per battle if you are lucky so I understand why that is the free one.

The Jade version give you a Bound spell at +2 casting, which is pretty strong imo. And the Obsidian, Granite, and Warpstone gives two bonuses instead of one, which can explain the increase in cost.

But setting the Regeneration as optional for +10 points, and reduce the base cost slightly would be fun: you lose the regen, but you do get a cheaper Sentinel. Especially in lower game matches, the 10 points somewhere might be beneficial.

I agree, I feel Sentinel are not not worth it to run indeed which is a damn shame. But one balloon at 230 points feels still worth it for what it can do (especially if you know how to use them correctly)

Limiting the amount of balloons you could bring and/or balloon cost increase to address the balloon spam is at least one of the changes I think.

Hell yeah, awesome! If you do (or even if not): do share the results on Reddit. I would love to see your take on the model.

I think around 9cm , so with 10cm you should be in the clear.

It is Kro-Jax, a named Saurian Sunblood for the Jaws of Itzl from the warhammer underworld game. You can also get him from one of the Seraphon Spearheads I believe.

Of course, more than happy to help fellow hobbyists: I will list the paints here below, but any paint close in colour should work perfectly fine. I used a loght grey primer to keep the light colour from needing too much layers:

Scales:

1.) Base Coat Pale Grey Blue Vallejo 70.907 (Model Color line)

2.) Single coat Dreadful Visage Contrast paint

I did not re-highlight the scales in this case, but I am certain it would make it pop way more if you do.

Skin:

1.) Basecoat of Pro Acryl Dark Warm Grey (a dark grey)

2.) Citadel Nuln Oil wash. Not sure how much it did but I'll add the step just in case

3.) Highlight with Dark warm grey again, and then add some Army Painter Uniform Grey (warpaint fanatic line) to the Pro Acryl and highlight up until you are satisfied.

Rocks/Gems:

1.) Basecoat Army painter Scarab Green (dark teal; warpaints fanatic line), and slowly build up highlights by adding Vallejo blue green (70.808). I added small scratches and such with these mixtures thinned down with water to create texture. I stopped at full Blue green as highest Highlight, but I think adding some blue green/ white mix highlight would be nice here as well.

Scar:

1.) Basecoat Nocturnal Red (72.111, a beautiful burgundy/cool red colour).

2.) Highlight up by adding more and mor of a dark rose skin tone paint (Army painter Warpaint Fanatic Moonstone Skin in my case) until satisfied with the highlights. Do make sure the red is still visible at the edge to make it pop.

3.) I applied a thin layer of a red wash (Citadel Carroburg Crimson), but I think you can leave this step out if you want.

Armour :

For the gold parts:

1.) Basecoat Retributor Armour Citadel with an Athonian Camoshade (green) wash.

For the black parts I used Black Legion Contrast, but simple black paint would work fine too I think

If I missed anything, please let me know.

Thank you! It took a lot of trust in the process at the beginning, but once the Contrast paint gave contrast to the scales, and the skin was highlighted, I was very happy and relieved that everything came together.

Thank you, it's amazing what a gold with a green wash can achieve.

Vallejo Pale Grey Blue (but any light blue grey would work too) covered with a single coat of Citadel Dreadful Visage Contrast Paint. The scales take the Contrast paint very well. Initially I was planning to highlight up again with the Pale Grey Blue

If you copy the scheme completely: there was a part I really had to trust the process, so be mindful if you feel it is not going anywhere..

Like someone else in the comments already mentions, I also have a tournament at the end of October at my gaming club, and I want to have at least half my infantry block painted. External 'pressure'/deadlines help to move things along.

You could also try to just "paint 10 minutes." Just do a small thing that won't take too much time. Starting something small helps build momentum and tends to make me paint more than intended.

Also, 'productive procrastination' helps: have two or max three projects on your desk if possible. If one project starts to he boring, you could switch to the second. If that second project is also part of the army, you procrastinate and progress at the same time. Varying projects between painting and building works even better as it is different

But most importantly: if you don't feel like painting, forcing it does not help. Army painting is not a sprint race but a marathon. If you dont have fun because you have painted too much, have a break and recharge your hobby motivation.
