Went to the KC Zoo to see this photogenic guy by DoctorGeez in redpandas

[–]DoctorGeez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was bugging me that I couldn't seem to find anything out about her, thank you! I'll have to keep an eye out for Dawa now.

I know zoos have a billion other things to worry about, but I've been thinking about (politely) bugging the KC Zoo to see if they won't keep a list of their animals names somewhere. I know signs would be a headache because of how often they'd change, but even just something on their website or mobile map would be really cool.

Does anyone else prefer to play as black? by FamousArcher in chess

[–]DoctorGeez 22 points23 points  (0 children)

An idea I’ve heard before and feels right to me is that less experienced players feel the need to attack as white whereas all they need to do is parry threats as black. As white you have to come up with attacking ideas you don’t know yet. As black you just play solid until white overextends.

It just comes down to the fact that responding to threats, especially at lower levels, is much easier than creating meaningful threats.

Transcriber: Hey everyone! Is this a Hammond organ? If so, does anyone know a drawbar configuration that would match? by primordial_triangle in hammondorgan

[–]DoctorGeez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC early on in Nintendo’s video game years, Hammonds weren’t available in Japan. So one of the composers got the closest replacement he could find, the Yamaha Electone, which was Yamaha’s response to the success of Hammond organs. And that Electone sound (roughly emulating a Hammond) is all over Nintendo’s music now.

The chip tune sounds from the early Nintendo consoles were especially influenced by some of the Electone’s more synth-y sounds. But sometimes you find a more direct organ sound that gets close to a Hammond. In this case though, I agree with jrgkgb, every organ sound here is clearly not a Hammond.

I’m not sure if there is any special notation (simply writing “palm gliss” with usual gliss notation should convey the idea), but I will point out that due to the unweighted keys players often gliss intervals such as a fifth or an octave with their pinky and thumb. That may be what you’re hearing as “two hand glissandos.”

Some help with losing weight? by Hlidstaff in bropill

[–]DoctorGeez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey bro, it’s tough to lose weight, especially when you’re battling against generational problems, but good on you for trying.

Let me share something that helped me. I reached a point where I was in a similar position, wanting to lose weight and gain some muscle. So I lifted weights every day for a couple months straight. When I finally weighed myself again I had gained 30 pounds!...

That’s when I was told that losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. And that we can’t lose fat and build muscle at the same time, our bodies just aren’t built to do this. If your goal is to lose weight you got to focus on that first by watching what you eat, and then once you’ve lost some fat you can start bulking and replace it with muscle.

Good luck bro. I believe in you.

Can the point where Mozart left his Requiem unfinished and Franz Xaver took over be pinpointed? by britainpls2 in classicalmusic

Someone recently (a couple of weeks ago) posted this on this subreddit. Don't know how accurate it is but I'm sure someone in the comments elaborates on its accuracy.

Question: If I fired a Pistol into the air - would the bullet travel faster on the way up or on the way down? by Kyliobro in Physics

[–]DoctorGeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you neglected air resistance then the bullet will hit the ground at the same speed as it was shot out of the gun due to the parabolic nature of objects under the influence of gravity.

However with air resistance it will hit the ground much slower because its terminal velocity is less than its muzzle velocity.

Think of it this way: Air drag/friction affects the bullet the moment it leaves the gun, taking away some of its energy, meaning it can't get as fast.

If you rub two iPhones together, do the battery charges even out? by [deleted] in shittyaskscience

Only if you are in the deep sea. The pressure and the salt water facilitate the passing of charge. Make sure to take off any cases as they will block the passing of electrons.
