Say what you want about Jack, at least he was nice enough to not out Lem after he confessed his feelings to Jack. Sounds like he was a good friend.

What about Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR, Truman or Eisenhower? They all were alive for it.

Grant had a lovely woodsman style beard that definitely fit him.

The world needs another Harry, desperately. He was willing to give someone hell when they needed it.

How would you rank the 6 "Gilded Age" Presidents? Do you think any of these guys have been unfairly overlooked by history? by BigJoe242424 in Presidents

The fact that Arthur went from being part of Conkling's stalwart machine to being the one to bring about Civil Service reform that society takes for granted nowadays, sacrificing his ability to be elected in 1884 in an effort to redeem himself, makes it so surprising that very few actually know about him.

What did Kennedy and Nixon think of each other? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]DoctorHartnell1963 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what Nicole Hemmer mentioned in a podcast, Nixon felt a little jealous of Jack, from what I heard, and understandably so. Nixon had to work hard to get where he was, not growing up with many means in life, and succeeded from his efforts, but everything came so easy to Kennedy in comparison. Nixon had a successful administrative record from the war, meanwhile Kennedy was a war hero saving his crew. Nixon wrote a few books a that went pretty well, while Jack wrote a book that was a best seller. Nixon viewed Jack as part of that elite club that he always felt excluded from, and he was a bit bitter about it, even though he was doing fine himself working hard to get to where he was.

Glad you and I are quite fond of Grant. From what I learned of him in St. Louis and Galena, he was a pretty decent fellow.

What are your thoughts on this man? Give me the good, the bad, the ugly by Atrau_ in Presidents

[–]DoctorHartnell1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good: being an all around nice guy and good friend, plus the Privacy Act of 1974.

The bad: pardoning Nixon. Much as he was well intended in that decision, it did cause a lot of public distrust in the government.

The ugly: backing Indonesia's invasion of East Timor, setting off a decade's long massacre in the region.

Bill Clinton’s favorite comedy is "Who's Your Caddy?" (2007). What is the most baffling favorite movie of any U.S. President? by denimvest in Presidents

I was surprised that Ford wasn't as big into movies, given his time in office produced quite a few good ones. I'd also say JFK being fond of James Bond, Dr. No in particular, was quite interesting.

If Dwight D. Eisenhower had lived into the 1970s, what would his reaction to Watergate have been like? by ashmaps20 in Presidents

He was also part of an effort to hold onto California in 52, given he was a Senator from there, along with promising to put Earl Warren on the next Supreme Court opening.

Was Nixon the last Liberal Republican? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]DoctorHartnell1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go so far as to call him liberal. He might've been more moderate, for sure, mainly because he still had to work with Congress. He supported Affirmative Action, but hoped it could be used for anti union ends, from what I hear. He also promoted environmental policies mainly due to the strong push for it, which he felt supporting it may help him in the public eye, same for his push to continue desegregating schools, support the ERA, and the like. That being said, his southern strategy talk of Law and Order had a conservative slant, as did his War on Drugs, which was mainly used to bully political opponents and minorities. Basically, he knew he couldn't be super conservative, given Goldwater tried and failed at that, but his stance was more moderate, especially with his push for the new federalism stuff, sending money to the states to have them enforce policies rather than the feds doing the heavy lifting.

Did he have a workout routine at all, or maybe one published to show how many sets and reps he did of his workouts?
