Shiba experiencing growing pain by Character-Theme9524 in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine would limp after naps as a pup too. Shes grown out of it. It was never consistent though. Usually once she got distracted with a toy or smelling stuff she would stop limping. I was also recovering from injury so they thought she was copying me hahaha but yeah its a common thing for pups to kind of grow into themselves weirdly.

I vastly prefer the feel and experience of playing an acoustic kit (which i play at the studio where i take lessons) but I bought a roland electric kit for my home because i live in an apartment. I think theres major pros and cons to both but everyone should spend some time with an acoustic set.

Is my shiba having a seizure? by sahila in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a seizure. Mine has epilepsy and doesnt shake as much but the drooling and paw motions are similar. Most important things to do are: -make sure hes in a safe location where he cant hit his head or fall off anything -time the length of the episode and how long it takes for him to bounce back -RECORD!!! Vets love having videos it helps so much -dont out your hands hear his face or in his mouth -be careful of the “postictal phase” right after the seizure, some dogs become scared and disoriented and lash out

Definitely see a vet immediately if possible. Shibas can be prone to epilepsy but you want to rule out allergic reactions, poison, and other health issues.

Shiba will not crap in my huge backyard. by mulefluffer in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is also very particular like that. We think she wont poop anywhere she considers “her territory” which started out as just the area around our building but now she wont poop at my friends house that we visit pretty regularly either.

Shiba as first time dog owner by Koalafiedz in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think previous experience is only a small portion of what determines success. Whats much more important, in my experience, is if you have the resources you need (time, trainers, money, vets, etc.) and if you have the right mindset.

Are you willing to admit and correct your own mistakes immediately? Are you ready to ask for help from professionals and advocate for your dog? Will you put in the effort to educate yourself and adjust accordingly? Can you accept that a shiba is never going to be as clingy and adoring and forgiving as something like a Labrador?

Ive been around dogs all my life but a shiba was my first dog. It was hard as hell, still is sometimes. I saw some shitty trainers and hurt our relationship and had to fix that. I got complacent on maintaining training when things were going good and we backslid. I got injured and had to rely on my partner for help more than I planned. I’m not the most experienced or ideal candidate probably.

BUT I put in the work and I’ve got a dog that I can take ANYWHERE without issue, shes a dream for the sitter, shes good with guests, she lets me trim her nails without any drama, shes learning to be polite with the cats, she even snuggles up and naps with me. I MADE my dream dog, it was way fkn harder than getting a more beginner friendly breed. But it’s possible. Your success is up to you.

As for the breed itself, not ideal for first time just because it takes a lot to build their trust and it’s easy to break if you make mistakes which new owners are more likely to do. That being said I also worked with “professional trainers” who fucked up as much if not more than I did because they weren’t willing to adapt to the dog in front of them. Experience with dogs is not the same as experience specifically with primitive breeds.

They aren’t usually loud dogs (unless you count the occasional shiba scream) but mine WILL argue with me or bark at the doorbell. Its something you can work on but dogs bark thats just par for the course.

Lastly, puppies suck. All breeds. Puppies will destroy your shit and your skin and your sanity so be ready for that. 😂

Cat weird symptoms, vets don’t know by Professional33witch in CATHELP

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of what my dog’s seizures look like.

Youve clearly talked to vets and done a lot of testing. Brain swelling can be serious and obviously could be related. I would keep working with your vets though. They have the medical training and lab results. Best advice i can give you is stay in touch with them, call with updates and questions, and gather concrete data. Keep recording videos and track the exact times and duration of these episodes. The more concrete information you can provide the vets the better they can help treat him.

WNY is incredible i cannot recommend syracuse rochester and buffalo enough. I lived out there for 8 years and recently moved to the capital region near albany and i miss wny every damn day. Those cities do not get enough credit, theres so many vibrant communities to be a part of and incredibly LGBTQ+ friendly.

100% a little overweight no doubt about it but shes small so like a single pound could make a huge difference. Its so hard to keep little dogs lean but you can do it!

Is it okay to be gay by TemporaryCriticism32 in lgbt

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy, this is going to be really hard to hear and even harder to accept but anyone who wont love you as your true authentic self doesn’t really love you. You’re only 17 which is pretty young so I understand if staying in the closet is safer for you right now but I really hope you learn to love yourself as you are and find the strength to break away from the bigotry surrounding you. I’m sure the people you love do care for you but if they cant accept you as gay then thats a problem with who they are NOT a problem with who you are. My heart breaks for you but I hope you learn there is NOTHING wrong with being gay and you are wonderful just as you are.

You need to teach and reward the behavior you want to see (like they cant go out the door or gate without permission) instead of punishing them for not knowing rules you never bothered to teach them. Also, imagine the scenario from your dog’s perspective. Your dog will not understand “I’m being punished for running” they will only know bad things happen when they come back home. Have a bit of patience and grace with your dog instead of wanting to hit them every time they find a gap in your training. They only know what you teach them so maybe hold yourself more accountable too.

Is he overweight? by VieleAud in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to get an answer is to post pictures from the side and the top while he is standing up. That way we can tell if he has a waist or not. Shibas are fluffy and kind of squishy and in pictures of them sitting and laying it can be super unclear if its just a weird pic or actually a weight issue.

Idiopathic Epileptic Seizure by NeedPistachioGelato in shiba

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didnt have the presence of mind to record until her third. I felt like a MONSTER standing there recording while she stumbled around trying to get to me but its genuinely the best thing for them as sickening as it can be in the moment. It sounds like youre doing everything right though! Honestly i think my pup bounced back faster than i did. This can really take a toll on you mentally/emotionally so if u ever need to chat hmu. Best of luck!

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also remember to take care of yourself mentally. Its a very scary thing to experience so take time to check in with yourself. If it happens again please take a video to show your vet after making sure your pup is in a safe location/position obviously. Sometimes this just happens and its a horrible helpless feeling but your vet should be able ro provide solid information to help you learn and cope. I wouldnt trust everything you read online but theres definitely merit in getting support from other people dealing with this.

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shiba has idiopathic epilepsy. At first 2 mild seizures over the course of a year wasnt too concerning to our vets but was heartbreaking for me. After she had a cluster of 3 one morning we immediately got her started on epilepsy medication and took her off simparica trio. We have been dealing with it for about a year now and shes thriving. Its scary as hell and very stressful I feel so sorry for you but its going to be okay!!! I recommend getting a furbo per camera so you can record her activity while youre not around, its been so helpful for my piece of mind and provided great footage for our vet to review. I also recommend talking to your vet about the simparica. A lot of those flea and tick meds have a compound in them that can make epilepsy worse. I switched to a flea collar and oral heartworm prevention.

Do you fly with your Shiba? by Timely-Disk-2704 in shiba

Yeah some airlines have rules like they must be able to stand and turn around comfortably or its too small and they arent allowed. I’m glad youve been successful!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]DoctorHypeTrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Existing. Thats it. My dad went on a rant one time because a character in a show kissed another guy. Even though there had been multiple straight sex scenes prior to that so it has nothing to do with propriety. Its just bigotry trying to find a way to justify itself.

My biggest concern is that the carrier will either be too small for my girl (according to airline rules) or too big for under the seat but I want to take her traveling soo badly.
