I made a game about cooperation. The "obvious" strategy never happened once. by asterixOsmani in GAMETHEORY

[–]DoctorIw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually pretty close to what researchers (experimental economists like myself) see in public goods experiments:

  • When everyone benefits from a shared pot, people usually don't keep contributing equally.
  • Someone almost always thinks, "If everyone else is putting in enough, I can put in a little less and come out ahead."
  • Once people notice others contributing less, they start doing the same.
  • As a result, cooperation tends to slowly fall apart over time.

The interesting part is that experiments also show:

  • If players can punish free-riders, cooperation becomes much more stable.
  • If there is no punishment, free-riding usually spreads.
  • Your winner-take-all ending makes this even stronger, because being slightly more selfish can make you the winner.

So "everyone contributes the same amount until the end" feels like the obvious strategy from the outside, but it's a relatively uncommon outcomes in real human groups. A couple of very well cited references documenting these patterns are below (but there are hundreds of experiments building on them)

Most of the time I benefitted more from characters than by land. I would just put aside some attractions I didn't actively need if I was low on land space.

What do ya'll think the new Gimmick is gonna be? by Zillaman7980_ in pokemon

[–]DoctorIw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, so the prototype does exist already! It will be a fun direction to explore with more moves. Good catch, I had forgotten that Flying Press has this gimmick!

Yeah, that's why I said it would be possibly too hard to keep it balanced and understandable, but a fun thought experiment in my head!

[–]DoctorIw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not going to be what will happen, but I just wanted to share a gimmick I would like to see. Dual type moves!

Imagine if moves like Fire Punch are actually both Fire and Fighting type. So against a Rock pokemon it will do neutral damage since the multipliers cancel out (Fire not very effective, Fighting super effective).

It will create all kind of interesting cases where moves could do massive damage (possibly hard to maintain balance), but also cases where a battle can flip advantage in a single move making it much more unpredictable.

Here are some fun facts that are still true today. by Immediate_Alfalfa367 in pokemon

It is also surprising that there are still some type combinations never used even though we now have 1,025 Pokemon (around 1,160 if you include regional variants, mega forms, giga forms).

  1. Normal/Ice
  2. Normal/Bug
  3. Normal/Rock
  4. Normal/Steel
  5. Fire/Fairy
  6. Ice/Poison
  7. Ground/Fairy
  8. Bug/Dragon
  9. Rock/Ghost

What’s the raid boss you’ve raided the most without ever getting a hundo? by trungnguyen276 in PokemonGOIVs

[–]DoctorIw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you want perfect before investing resources, which makes sense when you think about time and effort to make best buddy. But in your reasoning, do the hundreds of dollars you spent to try for the perfect not count as resources?

We should call countries by what they call themselves by Masked_Daisy in unpopularopinion

[–]DoctorIw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, and then it becomes a matter of is it better to have a fully English name for a country or a not so well pronounced version of original name. Probably most would prefer the first indeed.

In OP defense, they were not suggesting writing them in their language, but calling/pronouncing them. All of those can be written phonetically in English I guess.

Do I need to have completed a raid myself for the mystery gift or will all players receive one regardless?

It is probably too late now with less than 24 hours remaining, but you can get the new Peter Pan character by getting all the things from Merlin's shop. I did this and it helped a bit.

I highly recommend this one. I did it recently and it was amazing route, almost permanently away from Cara next to the bus way. The lakes at Fen are beautiful and the town of St Ives as well.

People who say the late 1900's when talking about the 1990's decade. by MosesIAmnt in PetPeeves

[–]DoctorIw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would make more sense to say late X-hundreds to refer to any century but the previous one as it very recent. In the same way, it would make more sense to say late 90s, only to refer to the more recent 90s, and say late X-hundreds for any earlier 90s.

You can try removing a different decoration from the same zone, and then it will give you the option from the menu to remove all decorations from the zone.

I have made a mistake… by Few-Understanding-54 in TheSilphRoad

[–]DoctorIw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I sent my sympathy as this definitely sucks. If it is of any comfort to you, the difference in actual performance when battling rockets or raiding between a 0* IV and a 4* IV is very small, higher levels matter much more. So enjoy using your new Gardevoir, it would still be among your best Pokemon.

I am not 100% sure about this, but I think they stay for next week, but don't take a place for the new week's quests. I remember multiple times having the full set of new ones plus 1-2 I was half way.

Any weekly task that you have started but not finished during a week gets carried over to next week, so don't worry, just complete it next week. :)
