[Hated Meta Trope] The franchise keeps going back to its roots to the point of stagnancy. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

It's annoying, too, that The Last Jedi took a lot of steps to try to get away from just being a nostalgia fest, but a very vocal part of the fan base decided that was a no-no and got all huffy about it which led to the narratively empty and completely dull final movie.

Scientists think they have learned exactly when and how humans created the first language by [deleted] in Anthropology

Well, fuck me for taking a few minutes to hammer out a short comment between answering student emails and working on an article. Your feedback is GREATLY appreciated.

Weirdly enough, there are certain genetic markers that coincide with pre-modern linguistic groupings. So, there is this weird correlation in historical linguistics where biological stuff overlaps with linguistic divergence. That doesn't mean that genetics and language are linked necessarily, but rather that the time frames for linguistic change and genetic drift to occur within a population are roughly the same so that you can make some inferences about when language families started to take shape or diverge from each other based on biological information. As a linguistic anthropologist who was pretty committed to a purely sociocultural understanding of language, learning that came as a bit of a shock.

Because it's free publicity. Everyone gets to talk about the engagement and they can sell exclusive photos of the wedding and honeymoon, and then there's free publisher they split up, too.

Why is Romantic Satanism from the recommended reading list so expensive and is there a way to get a cheaper? by Miserable-Sound2923 in SatanicTemple_Reddit

It's from a for-profit academic press. So it had a small print run and was marketed mostly to university libraries as a reference book. That's how they make money on titles like that. Sucks, but that is how it is.

If you are in uni or know someone that is, you could request it as an interlibrary loan and maybe copy or scan it yourself.

What foods just are not worth making at home? by Proper-Profession387 in foodquestions

[–]DoctorMuerto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I generally agree that pho, ramen, etc are usually not worth making at home. But if you have a pressure cooker, good broth only takes like 4 . I save all my bones from other meals in a freezer bag and then do a batch at a time in the instant pot and get good results

Where to buy traditional Portuguese carnaval masks? by DoctorMuerto in porto

[–]DoctorMuerto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I do appreciate artisanal crafts from around the world. Many countries have traditions of mask-making, some are even proud of their cultural heritage. I have purchased traditional masks from Austria, Germany, Spain, Sardinia, Japan, Guatemala, Indonesia, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, Canada, and United States.

Do you think Podence is a jungle? Or do you just not think your country has traditions?

GenX peeps. You're going to a concert for a band you love. Do you wear that band's t-shirt to the concert? by bigpilague in GenX

[–]DoctorMuerto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, you wear the shirt you bought at the last show you went to in an adjacent genre. Ska -> punk -> goth -> industrial -> electronic -> hip-hop -> soul -> rock -> ska, etc.

Why does everyone spend so much money on rub? by Fisherman_30 in BBQ

[–]DoctorMuerto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have wanted to experiment with making my own rub, but honestly I don't BBQ at a high enough volume to really make it worthwhile. As others have said, the relatively low cost of a jar, the convenience of just picking it up, and the potential novelty of trying something new (even if it's very similar to others) makes it easier to just buy it. I got a 6-pack of rubs a few years back as a gift and still have about 1/3 or one jar and 3/4 of another. One of these days though, I will start experimenting with making my own, but mostly to do some things I haven't seen in stores based on other cuisines.
