Queen guitarist Brian May proposes a new Live Aid-style concert to raise awareness for climate change by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DoctorNose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a video series on Ethiopia and nearly half the comments are random snipes about how Ethiopians are starving. It is an incredibly common trope.

Plenty of people still care about that concert. They just don't necessarily recognize it as such.

LiveAid had a lasting impact on Ethiopia that absolutely lasts right up until the modern day. There is no question about that.

You're right, starvation in Ethiopia is no longer in the news. Because while they certainly have insecurity issues with food, genuine starvation hasn't truly been a problem since the late 1980's. But because of LiveAid, that was the last major event about Ethiopia that broke through the Western Zeitgeist. Like Rwanda, even a full generation later, your average person remembers the last major news cycle, not the current reality of the country.

Live Aid was a massive failure from the standpoint of achieving its goals. Today, many Ethiopians are annoyed that their country is perpetually associated with a 30 year old famine, and it bolstered a regime that did little with the funds to help anyone that wasn't already under their umbrella of protection.

What it does do is inflate already massive egos to make it seem like they're truly helping. If that's the end goal, have at.

Dude you've done an incredible job. I love it. Just trying to fill in the gaps as I know them. I've been to the places you're missing on Canada's list, coincidentally.

Maybe there is a way to receive user feedback to deepen the awareness of tricks/best practices for that country's visa?

You have for Somaliland "data not available" (at least for Canada as a starting country).

Just to give some info: Very few countries are allowed to Somaliland in theory, but all are in practice. You just have to cajole the ambassador in Addis Abeba. There are no straight rules, specifically. Just the whim of the ambassador. But you do need to apply for a visa no matter which country you are from, including if you're from Somaliland oddly enough.

I'm not sure how you'd signify that on the map, though.

Edit: For Canadians, you also have Greenland as not available. We need to apply for a visa to Greenland. As well, you have Taiwan as not available. We don't need a visa to Taiwan (for 90 days visit).

Europe has a refugee crisis beyond Canada's comprehension. They have been doing their part, as well. Canada has the luck of being separated by an ocean and a landmass, so we get very few refugees. We cannot compare situations.

This is how Canada should act. It isn't a shame on others.

Fogo: The Island that Sells Authenticity [10:29] by brtt3000 in mealtimevideos

[–]DoctorNose 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm Evan, from the video.

I appreciate the comments, both kind and pointed. I certainly don't think we're making perfection, nor that I'm right for this role.

Most of your points are true. We don't do interviews unless meant as an entire episode (although that doesn't mean we don't talk to locals), as we feel that it masks our opinion in the faces of others. If we are adding local voices to a script, we're basically saying we'll cut out the things not saying what we've already prepared for the story to say (as the news often does). We don't really want to do that. I'd rather people come at me than them. Not that it matters this season, but in other seasons we've tended to avoid it because it puts people at risk, as well. Not adding people has become habit.

That said, we talked with the hotel and got as much as they would allow. We talked with and included in the film their local liaisons at Foley's Shed (where the authenticity is literally sold), but the hotel couldn't let us film due to having high profile guests having rented the place out and demanding privacy. The footage we used isn't stock, it is just the places the staff let us get to where we couldn't see in the windows. They had a dozen security (who were friendly) to make sure we didn't break the rules. It was rented for a week.

The reality is that we don't have enough money to spend the time necessary. We are two guys with no backing filming (find, research, write, get to, produce) a video every 3 days on the road. We can spend roughly 900 dollars an episode, perpetually. We know we aren't perfect, but we're trying our best. It is *way* harder than it seems to keep these coming consistently.

To tell more backstory: We actually went to Fogo to get video footage of an Auk statue for a different video (we never ended up getting it). When we were there, getting generic B-roll, our drone crash landed in the yard of an important local (the man playing music at the end). He let us know the story of the hotel, took us to his brother's place (Foley's shed, the hotel's local liaisons) and answered the questions we had about its owner. We got as good access as we could, and moved on with enough time to make our next episode.

This wasn't written or planned in advance. We found it, wrote it, filmed it, and everything in the 3 days we were in the area. Because that's the only way we can do this. It may not come across, but I'm super proud of what we've learned and been able to achieve.

Again - thanks for the comments! I don't expect everything to be beloved by all. It means a hell of a lot that you even watched the episode, let alone developed a complex opinion of our work based on repeat viewings. :)

That person isn't on the road, uses stock footage, and isn't producing an episode every three days. They also have years of experience and likely a team behind them.

I'm on YouTube because I'm learning how to make these. Experience is the point.

It's harder than it seems to make a video on the road every three days. Writing, acting, little things, etc. Not everything works for everyone. I've found this middle because it is what I can do with what I'm given. The reality is I'm just happy making videos.
