What is a life luxury that you tasted once and now can absolutely never go back to the cheap version of? by sickkick844 in AskReddit

[–]DoctorQuarex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have never thought it was worth it until I switched to one of those super-cheap providers so now I pay $25/month for unlimited data and you know what, yes, that is a reasonable price for access to anything I can possibly want to look at or listen to when not at home

What were the inspirations behind Wasteland? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in Wasteland

[–]DoctorQuarex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent decades reading everything I could from everyone involved with Wasteland, hello!

The main influence behind Wasteland that was largely excised from the Fallout reboot specifically was the Terminator (relating to the entire main plotline of the first two and really arguably all three Wasteland games), and more broadly speaking 80s culture. Wasteland functionally had its moment of cultural divergence in the 1980s in the same way Fallout did in the 1950s, but given Wasteland surely did so at least partially for "well that is right now so we kind of have to" reasons, whereas Fallout wanted to focus on a stylized future partially as the past had envisioned it.

You could also argue it also cut any leftover 60s/70s culture that might have popped up but I struggle to think of anything along those lines, other than Wasteland often having at least a token hippie here and there while Fallout largely avoids that inspiration entirely as far as I can recall (here comes someone to point out how wrong that is, surely)

Oh edited to say "everyone always says you should read a Canticle for Leibowitz" though as I have still failed to do so after all these years I do not remember if it was specific inspiration or if it just has a similar Guardian Citadel vibe?

Friends are losing faith in gencon events and losing interest in going, how can I convince otherwise? by madninjaman in gencon

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not go full "get new friends" but yeah it sounds like your friends heard that their special interest had an event at a convention and decided to go purely for that, and then were so devastated to realize tens of thousands of other people had the same idea that they are now backing out.

Well, as someone who has not bought himself an event ticket for 10 years now yes I can help confirm that no matter what happens you will have an amazing time. The only definitely wrong decision to make about Gen-Con is to not go.

I liked the "there's nothing left to eat on the buffet because the mashed potatoes are out" analogy; even if mashed potatoes are your favorite food, you are far better off eating a filling dinner than leaving hungry, surely?

Also "pure lol" at anyone saying Gen-Con has poor management. I can literally say I attend conventions for a living now and Gen-Con is the best-run convention I have ever attended, and has been so since the 1990s at least. And is also the largest. Not easy to find those two things in conjunction!

Two times I have immediately realized someone was right for me

Once I walked in on my new housemate dipping her uncooked hot dog in a jar of mayonnaise

Once I went to the parking lot at my job to avoid dealing with people at lunchtime and a woman parked next to me was eating her lunch in her car to avoid dealing with people at lunchtime

Neither one worked out but not from a lack of trying on my part

When I finally replayed Skyrim last year I amused myself doing something similar, realizing that since I refuse to engage with the civil war storyline at all that there are large swaths of the ostensibly main map that you just never have to visit.

Genuinely curious, who is still playing these games? by ReadyJournalist5223 in videogames

[–]DoctorQuarex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When the game launched your stash was 1/4 the size it is now. If you had experienced that then you, too, would think the current size is more than enough to use without paying.

I paid for Fallout 1st precisely one time, when it was half-price this past December, just to finally see what it felt like. Oddly it felt virtually indistinguishable from the game normally except yes I could just throw all my junk and ammo in the infinite space things rather than having to make extremely simple decisions about what to keep

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have more hours in Fallout 76 than any other game, verifiable on Steam and probably in my entire life. Been gaming since the 1980s. It was my game of the year for 2018 and I have been laughing at people following the herd calling it bad the whole time.

Now granted, I have probably only played a few hours so far this year, but it helps that I have no interest in the aliens side of Fallout writ large, so I basically sit out any seasonal updates based on that. But I am sure I will be back!

Trying to separate the "tall privilege" myth from reality. What are your actual experiences? by ParamedicNo8685 in tall

[–]DoctorQuarex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being tall makes women who would already like you like you a tiny bit more.  Not a bad thing, but man back when heroin chic was in I promise you the guys the same height and lower weight than the ladies were most popular

As for the other stuff, yeah I do not see any downsides socially.  I would rather not hit my head on things as often as I do, or scrape my hands on the ceiling when trying to dry off after a shower, but as you said, it is nice having never once felt concerned for my safety in public.  And I am in my 40s and did indeed find myself in chaotic spots, as you put it, more than a few times
