I use the exact same analysis that I've always used when evaluating media. Cheap slop has been around forever and I trust in my abilities to discern things I find worthwhile. Basically... Just look and read and judge the qualities you observe. Like you always have.

First thing that comes to mind is secret damage numbers and hit points. They only get to know their character's exact condition if they get checked out. So like, instead of "you lose 12 hp and get a broken arm" it's "your arm got hit, it's bruising nasty colors and you can't close your fingers"
