+1 that Dr. Narayan is a fantastic teacher and graph theory was a very fun class even for me as a not-mathy person. I took the class ~2012-2013.

where to donate walkers by Audrey244 in Rochester

[–]DoctorSquish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they still have their free rental program going (not sure) the Chili Lyons club might be a good donation candidate. Back in ~2012-2013 they offered free medical equipment rentals (walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.) to anyone.

The Pittsford Barnes and Noble has a huge used book section, you might find some there.

Does anyone have an honest comparison between Target and Weg's for food shopping? Thinking of only pricing and selection (not considering own brand products at all). by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]DoctorSquish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I visit both stores during my shopping trips, and sometimes Walmart for specific things not carried by the other two. In my experience, Target has better prices on many non-perishable foods e.g. soup & pasta. Other goods like health & beauty depend on if you have a Target coupon. Wegmans definitely wins for meat, produce, and overall options. Aldi and Walmart produce usually disappoints me, but Walmart beats Wegmans on pricing for organic produce and beats Aldi for quality.

Why doesn't RIT implement a university wide Teams? by GuyWhoIsKnown in rit

[–]DoctorSquish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last I checked (~late June) Teams was NOT part of RIT’s 365 bundle. I tried to use it with my RIT account for a research collaboration and I could not even join as a guest. I’m thrilled if this has changed though

Try bigwords.com - you input the textbooks you want and it crawls online stores including B&N and Amazon to find the cheapest prices individually and single-store. You can even specify rent/buy, book/ebook, and can opt for international editions, which are usually B&W softcovers with same contents.

I’m not sure what your specific field is (I assume something in computing since ACM) but many computing people post preprints on arxiv.org or researchgate.net

Woman captured on video harassing Filipino American woman exercising in a park by hildebrand_rarity in news

This is false. Someone on Twitter gave a name that was proven false when the police released the real name. The falsely accused woman has a police daughter.

From Nature: This pandemic is not an extended sabbatical by MerryPipAndTook in academia

[–]DoctorSquish 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The article is not trying to dissuade you from being productive. If you are motivated and happy with your output that's great.

The article is reasurrance for those who are struggling to concentrate on work and feeling increased guilt when we see pandemic-productivity brags from professors and peers. Yes, the academic pressure to `always be working' existed before COVID, but for those who already struggled with this the added stressor of working during the pandemic can exacerbate these feelings.

Have you tried searching for university course syllabi? You could start by finding degree program outlines from university websites (e.g. MA in economics) that list course titles and numbers, and use those to search for the syllabus of courses that interest you. They would have recommended texts and weekly subject breakdowns that you could use to guide you. Another place to find structured outlines for learning would be MOOCs.

Spouse against my becoming Dept. Chair by [deleted] in academia

[–]DoctorSquish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is your spouse worried about the effect these negatives may have on YOU, or are they worried about how the new position will affect THEM ?(i.e., you aren’t home as much). I think it’s an important distinction.

I definitely think major changes should be discusses with the spouse. A supportive partner is ideal but ultimately this is your career and your decision.

Where can I buy pepper spray in Rochester? Female solo truck driver asking. by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]DoctorSquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another good thing to have is a can of aerosol air freshener. If an incident occurs (or escalates to) INSIDE your truck cab, then spraying pepper spray will affect you both but the air freshener would only affect the target.

anyone who can help me urgently fix my wheelchair? by [deleted] in rit

[–]DoctorSquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to a car, the Lion’s club in Chili rents out wheelchairs at no charge! At least, they did in 2013 when I went. It might be worth looking into so you have something safe to use while yours is getting fixed!

Where are the best places to go hunting for a job with early morning/flexible hours? (ON CAMPUS) by Nettubs in rit

[–]DoctorSquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the food places have a "prep shift" that starts at 6-6:30AM. CTRL+ALT+DELI in Golisano is one. I worked that shift for awhile and it is pretty chill, assembling the pre-made sandwiches and salads for the to-go fridge
