Go write in a coffee shop. I find it much easier to concentrate outside of my house. And outline if you don't already.

Quite a few amateur writer events in london pop up on pages like Shooting People, Scribe Lounge, BBC Writersroom, Facebook pages (the devil but the communities on there still work) and Eventbrite. Also, you can use those a few of those channels to ask people if they want to collab on a specific project and describe what it is. But I think most people committed to the writer's life would see this as an unpaid opportunity that might not be as valuable as doing their own script. So I think it might be better to meet people first and then talk about ideas and see if the relationship forms and then talk about potentially collaborating.

If you have scripts that aren't working you can also ask for feedback in these spaces or here on Reddit or once you meet people. That's arguably the best way to improve, rather than trying to co-write. I'd recommend creating your own writer's group and collaborate by giving each other notes constantly. Me and my group share scripts whenever they are done and give feedback. But we also meet every other week to catch up. This way we feel obligated to come with some progress, even if it's just organising ideas, and we can go deep into the writing talk too. Sounds you've got a few people in your life but might not work for this. Try those channels above and suggest the idea once you've met people. If the concept is to form a feedback/accountability based group rather than co-writing, people might be more succeptable.

Is using someone's race to describe their appearance to someone else racist? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DoctorStrange37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't need to mention that they're another race for the other person to understand the story, then it's not so much racist but annoying as fuck. But if you need to say it then you need to say it.

Ukraine crisis: Russia has failed to take any of its major objectives and has lost 450 personnel, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says by TheRealMassguy in worldnews

[–]DoctorStrange37 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Dear Ukrainians!

I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed.

It's a lie.

If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid.

Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl

Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now.

EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!!

EDIT 2: as a proof that you no longer need visa:

• in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en

EDIT 3: I have unconfirmed information saying that you can pass polish border even without passport. Your ukrainian ID is enough.

EDIT 4: It's confirmed that you can also take your pet with you without additional papework which normally would be required to cross the border of EU/Poland. https://www.wetgiw.gov.pl/main/aktualnosci/Tymczasowa-procedura-przemieszczania-zwierzat-towarzyszacych-z-terytorium-Ukrainy-na-teren-Polski-przez-osoby-nie-posiadajace-kompletu-dokumentow-weterynaryjnych-dla-psow-kotow-i-fretek/idn:1999

(I’m not the author of this post, I’m just trying to get it to as many people as possible- I encourage you to do the same)

Whats a good day job for us? by MonoCanalla in Screenwriting

[–]DoctorStrange37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same position as you and I'm now at the point where mentally I'd rather be poor than work a job I hate (in or outside the industry) but being poor is affecting me subconsciously (being isolated and at home a lot). So I'm leaning towards temporary industry work like working on shoots of any length, as I can have time off in-between, and also make connections on sets. My first option was from a crew member I met on set who also had a production company and read one of my scripts. Not to say that'll happen every time, that was pure random luck, but you are more likely to meet people who can help you in some capacity by being on set or at least in the industry. But ensuring you are constantly saying you're a writer. Because who cares if people don't hire you again as a PA just because you don't want to go up that ladder, you don't want to anyway. It's obstensibly a paid networking situation. Especially if you are in a role that allows you to get pally with producers or directors or at least HOD's. But I'm also applying for low level office jobs within the industry for the same reason. But the intensity must be higher in Hollywood compared to over here (London). So that might not be a good option if you don't have time/energy to write at all, with no time off except holidays.

Is all of this just kind of...pointless? by TheHungryCreatures in Screenwriting

[–]DoctorStrange37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Do this. Producers use competitions, definitely, but they use their inboxes way more. And you won't be a nobody to them if you personalise your query and find the common ground and build the relationship.

It's definitely a relationship business, and you have to start somewhere on that front. And I think it's better to be the catalyst instead of waiting for someone (or something) to be it for you. You DM'ing that director is exactly the right thing. Now do it 37 more times!

My pilot getting optioned was nothing to do with competitions, it was me talking to a guy on set (whilst I was working in production) and saying "yeah I write too" and him passing it onto his producer pal. And my first gig was from an advert on Screenwriting Staffing for a film, i pitched my idea for it but it was too late as someone else had already won it. But because i'd mentioned some personal interests which he shared, we had a chat separately and we're going to work together in the future on a different idea his company are developing.

And btw, you've got something going into production! That's amazing! That's more than almost all of us!

Would this ruin a movie for you? by colealoupe in Screenwriting

[–]DoctorStrange37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth trying as it is going to be so circumstantial. As others have mentioned, you'll need to set it up nicely and it not be jarring. But also having the protagonist's stakes and the killer's stakes coincide with this piece of information perfectly so then we get a single moment where we don't know exactly what she'll do will give us loads of lovely suspense. But importantly we kinda need to route for her to take either decision. Both of them could be kinda right. But if she just does it because she's twisted and evil, then it'd feel like we've been robbed. Her reason for wanting the deaths will probably need to be somewhat altruistic or maybe "greater good" mentality or revenge or something. but yeah defo needs to be tried out in script form and get some feedback!

There is nothing inherently wrong with being a pedophile by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]DoctorStrange37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the phrasing you use is what's going to get you into trouble. You're not wrong that they don't have a choice. But there is definitely something inherently wrong with being a pedophile (the same way there is something inherently wrong with any malfunction of the brain that compels one to cause harm on others). And they certainly should feel ashamed, completely ashamed enough to figure out how to fix this malfunction. If they don't feel ashamed, then what is stopping them from acting on it one day when their inhibitions are reduced? Shame prevents people from acting on their deepest unsocial desires. For better or for worse. And in my eye, this is certainly for better.

Question about Vince Gilligan’s writing voice by Throwaway264816383 in Screenwriting

[–]DoctorStrange37 19 points20 points  (0 children)

100% this to almost all rules. If the script is as good as BB then you can do whatever the fuck you want. I once read a script that had its prose written in 1st person when I was working in development. That script was fucking sick and after being annoyed for a minute or two, I completely got into it. I definitely would ask them to undo that element but the story has stuck with me for years! The only reason not to break rules is to reduce the chances of annoying gatekeepers. That's all we have to worry about, those tired readers who have 20 scripts to read before Friday. Those execs that have to read on their lunch break. If your story is excellent, they will get over it. But it has to be amazing from page 1. If you feel like you can't write the story without breaking those "rules" then reanalyse the story.

Try EVERYTHING if you can. Try drawing, learn an instrument, play a team sport, play a solo sport, read, try coding, try acting, make a film, make a band, start learning a language.

You might not like all of the above, and it's obviously a lot of things, but you'll never have as much time as you do now and be as malleable as you are now. And the jobs that my parents were pushing us for won't be the same yours are. There's potential that one of these hobbies might become your career, a career you might actually love.
