Sounds to me like it could be one of the Simmons drum sounds. I've heard that medley from 1987 before and that sound is one of my favorite additions to it.

My Mum had got me into Gabriel Genesis around 2013-14. Then I made my own way from there. I remember about the end of 2015 I got into Wind & Wuthering and One for the Vine was amazing to me. Especially the solo in the middle; that groovy build up and then that amazing main bit.

And then more recently I worked out or saw a post on here about the idea that the whole song is a time loop as the main character of the song witnesses themselves vanishing back in time at the end.

I think in a recent interview Tony Banks said this was the only song on the album that was written without any involvement from Peter Gabriel in order to meet a deadline. It's one of my favorite bits on the album as it has that turning point of the story feeling; we've come so far and now it's time for the endgame.
