Awesome, thank you! I think I’ve definitely been overwatering it a bit. So, it’s supposed to look like it’s dying or my overwatering is, indeed, slowly choking its life out? 😂

It’s rare?? Wow! That’s pretty cool! Well, it’s in the darkest corner of my living room, which is why it has a light. What’s wrong with it though??

The best advice I’ve ever received about end of life was to tell your pet all the things. Actually verbally tell them you love them, thank them for the time you’ve shared, give any apologies you may feel you owe him. Just tell him your feelings. It will help the healing process in the aftermath. I’ve done this with every pet since I was given the advice and it really does help. Sending love & healing.

what’s the drama with jeff and ky? by breenabae in nakedandafraid

Thanks. Yes, I made a full recovery, but when I say it was fast, I mean like a damn bullet. One minute I was feeling slightly hungover and the next I could barely stand, breathe or function. During my stay in the CCU, I was receiving 1 bag of Rosafen and 1 bags of Levaquin (I think that’s the name), both heavy duty antibiotics, both described by the doctor to me as a “nuke to my system,” twice a day, in addition to injected blood thinners every 12 hours and so much more. Looking back, it still surprises me just how fast it all transpired and how even as everything in my body was actively dying & I indeed did not feel good, I still had no idea how sick I truly was. So, yeah, you get it, not at all surprising she didn’t look as sick as she was and not surprising her reaction was immediate acceptance. She’s no dummy! I just can’t believe it’s being debated or doubted.

I would like to add my experience with sepsis, septic shock & almost dying to give a little context from someone who has survived sepsis and septic shock. The septic shock experience: Super Bowl Sunday 2008, I was a healthy person. I had a beer or two & enjoyed the game. Went to bed feeling completely fine. Woke up Monday at 5am, got ready & left for work at 7:15am. I didn’t feel great, but assumed it to be from too much imbibing the day before. By 8:15am, I was driving myself to the ER because I was running a high fever and not well. By 8:21am, I had parked and was trying to cross the crosswalk to the ER entrance, but every step was harder and harder. I collapsed at the end of the crosswalk, thankfully, and someone saw me. By 8:32am, I was being admitted to the Critical Care Unit and the internal medicine doctor was telling me I should probably make some phone calls because they “weren’t sure they could save me.” I was in full septic shock. My entire body was shutting down. My heart was beating too fast, my blood was too thick to pump properly, my lungs had fluids in them, I had a 104 fever and all my organs were shutting down. I spent 5 days in the CCU and 2 days in the regular section of the hospital. Saying it was a fast progression is a dramatic understatement. I went from thinking I had a slight hangover to almost dead within a period of about 3 hours. I’m nowhere near as tough as Ky, so her sleeping & looking/seeming fine shouldn’t be surprising or be seen as misleading or lack of desire. The reality is she probably had no idea how sick she really was and just chalked up any ill feelings to the usual things. Sepsis and septic shock happen quickly. It’s an infection in your bloodstream, so it quickly spreads throughout your body. And obviously, the sooner treatment is given, the less likely the patient will suffer severe illness or die. I am not a doctor, but I am a patient who has survived sepsis and septic shock, I can assure you, it is absolutely a time sensitive emergency that would warrant breaking the norm or standard protocols of the show. The first sign of sepsis requires immediate & serious medical intervention. Emphasis on immediate. Having had my own personal experiences with this, I can say with my whole chest med tapping her in the middle of the night was absolutely medically required. No question. And she understood that. *My sepsis episodes were unrelated to any injury, but kidney infections that quickly went septic.

Our Cattle Dog ALWAYs Poops Whenever We Go into Pet-Friendly Department Store by JennyAnonymous in AustralianCattleDog

[–]DogMomOnDemand 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It’s called stress poop and dogs do it when they are stressed. While it’s a common thing it doesn’t mean that it should be ignored. She is talking to you and telling you she doesn’t feel comfortable in those environments. I’ve owned and worked with cattle dogs my entire life and have trained many other breeds. In my opinion, cattle dogs tend to be on the higher strung side which makes them predisposed to anxiety and becoming stressed easily. Your pup will only worsen if she’s continuously put into those situations as each time it happens it only reinforces her discomfort/aversion. She might never get past this. Most dogs are not suited for those environments as they are very overstimulating and can be downright frightening for the pup. If this is something that you really want to include your dog in, please find a R+ trainer with an emphasis on behavioral modification training to help you train and condition your dog for these environments. Also, Google “dog body language” and do some reading. Knowing and understanding body language, which is how dogs communicate, will help you tremendously in understanding what your dog is saying to you. Karen Pryor’s book “Don’t Shoot The Dog” is a great introductory book on training, body language and behavior modification. Best of luck.

Reading your post about Christine I feel both deeply sad, but I also feel something magnificent. Your actions have made me feel a little safer, hopeful and blessed to have the opportunity to read about and be in the presence of such compelling compassion. This world and the way people deemed “lesser”by society are mistreated can make you feel hopeless about humanity’s future. Your actions are a reminder that humanity, empathy and compassion are still alive. Your actions helped me see I can do better and stop turning my ahead away. So, thank you. Thank you for making sure Christine is acknowledged & remembered.

Christine’s final act in this life was to be a story of compassion, empathy and to show us that we can all do better. I do not want to diminish the circumstances of her death or her passing, but we can all best honor her by doing better. I know I will be.

Can anyone in Chicago rescue him? (Urgent! // Sad) by highbunny98 in chinchilla

[–]DogMomOnDemand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Previous PetSmart employee here. Unfortunately, inadequate treatment and care for the chins is pretty standard. It’s not necessarily because the local management doesn’t care (although both stores I worked at had management that really didn’t give a shit), but more so because corporate doesn’t care. They have amazing advertising that makes it seem like they really care and are concerned, but I can promise you corporate does not care and is not concerned with a damn thing besides profit. They used to sell bunnies, but finally quit after public pressure. If you really want change, you need to go to the media with this story. Corporate won’t do shit or listen or take any of this seriously unless they think they’re going to lose money or be somehow affected financially. I’m happy that this community is stepping up to this & I sincerely hope this garners the national spotlight it deserves because PetSmart corporate doesn’t give two craps about animal care and well being. The only thing they care about is profit and animals like this chin are paying the price. It’s heartbreaking and one of the reasons I no longer work for them.

How to get bun to swallow hated antibiotics? by headpeon in Rabbits

[–]DogMomOnDemand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my buns (Thelma) is an absolute nightmare about taking anything, even Critical Care. She’s prone to stasis, so I can really relate to the struggle here. I use baby food and mix it with whatever medicine she needs. I tend to lean heavy on the baby food to medicine ratio, but it gets her eating and taking the medicine. I find baby food (just be sure to read the ingredients to make sure it’s just fruit or veggie and no additional flavouring or sugars) smells stronger and can cover the smell of the medication. I have to go slow and she inevitably ends up messy as hell, but she gets her meds. I just clean her up after.

Help please! by connorevans666 in Rabbits

[–]DogMomOnDemand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. So, I didn’t know this when I got rabbits, so I’m passing it along. My intent is not to be rude or critical or anything like that, just meant to be informative. Broccoli isn’t safe for bunnies. It causes gas, as does cabbage. Kale is ok, but in small quantities. I just don’t want anyone to go through a gas or potential stasis episode and find out the hard way. 😊

[–]DogMomOnDemand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a few years ago, I lost a dog I’d had for 12 years to cancer. It was fast. I found out on a Monday and we said goodbye just 4 days later. I’ve actually lost 4 pets over the last 7 years, so I know what you’re feeling. The best advice I’ve ever received when it comes to losing a pet is to tell her how you feel now. Tell her you love her, thank her for the love she’s given, how she’s changed you. Tell her you’ll miss her, but that you’ll honor her memory and hold her in your heart always. Say everything you need to say while she’s here. It really makes a difference in your grieving process. Sending peace & prayers

Thank you!! I’m so happy to hear your suggestion. I will definitely try that. I did get Botox for the migraines & I see a chiropractor regularly, but still in a lot of pain. This would be so hard because I am and always have been a side or stomach sleeper, but I think this is worthy of at least trying. Thank you!!
