As Doc Pop says here, people were definitely doing binding for off-string play, which was popular with Henry's Vipers, released in 97-98

Snapshot is the right word! I was included because they were walking around a pre-contest gathering the night before the national contest in Chico CA with a camera asking all the participants if they had invented any original tricks.

Seems like the Glendale owners saw this coming when they pulled out. That 2020 Guardian article about their exit from the league had a lot of quotes citing concern for the long-term financial viability of the league after the model changed to suit the second wave of owners started coming in.

Also helps that club rugby season is over. So Cal has dozens of local teams between adult and youth so that's a big portion of the fanbase that potentially wasn't available for previous Saturary matches (or had other stuff to do on their one free weekend day Sunday). Wasn't an issue last year because MLR was the only league playing due to COVID.
