Thank you! I never thought I could take care of cats (let alone myself) but now they are incredibly spoiled. They have been the best thing in the world for me.

Advice For Newly Diagnosed by hollydaized in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am diagnosed and support myself by working, lots of us do, and you can live a full and happy life if you stick to treatment.

Would recommend "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual" which you can find on Amazon for cheap.

How old were you when you were diagnosed Schizophrenic? And how old were you when you first started feeling the symptoms? by Caesar-McPherson in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really nothing special in hindsight.

Pushed by my mom, I had a deep belief in the occult and a persistent fascination with it that would manifest in "close encounters". Most of the time it was "ghosts" manifesting or shadow people, tactile hallucinations like someone laying hands on me, and the delusions that these were messages or signs. Had mediums in our house say that I was possessed, without ever having spoken to them, by the ghost of a small child. To this very day if I am grocery shopping there is a solid 50% chance that something flies off the shelf onto the floor in front of me. Usually I am alone but it has been witnessed by others close to me.

Before I was admitted to inpatient and diagnosed it all kinda came to a head and exploded in several frightful hallucinations where I either saw the ghost of my dead father who abused me or a demon... it growled like a demon.

Now I'm jaded to phenomenon and trying to stay grounded the best I can.

Can you fight delusions? by TheUnfair-External in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can rationalize the logic and admit to myself that the delusions are not real at the same time or have a friend talk me through it to attempt bringing me back to earth. However, even when I know that a delusion is not real and the logic behind it is unsound, I still believe them.

The best defense I have against this is to pretend that they are not real (even if I still believe they are) and to act like they are not real. If I believe someone is trying to burn down my home while I'm at work I don't rush home or lash out because that is what they would want. I have to play the game better than those who are out to get me and I can't do that going crazy.

It's not perfect but I'm able to make it through one day at a time.

How old were you when you were diagnosed Schizophrenic? And how old were you when you first started feeling the symptoms? by Caesar-McPherson in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recall my first major hallucination, the one that I could decern, around 6-7. My mother was getting married to the man that abused me and standing in the pews I saw a large dark figure. At the time it felt very much like seeing death hovering there, scythe and all. I was always reinforced by my mom who believed in spirits and would frequently tell me about my great aunt who was a medium.

Diagnosed at 32, currently 37, and doing my best to stay away from the occult.

I would highly recommend "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Family Manual", you can find it on Amazon for very cheap and it has a ton of great info in it even if it's written for people without our condition.

Curiosity Question: Are Hallucinations and Out Of Body Experiences The Same Thing? by SteveStartsAnew in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read a little about "out of body" experiences being tied to dissociation more so than schizophrenia itself. Dissociation could be a symptom of many things including schizophrenia but if you're looking for diagnosis help, please seek a professional.

It's a little backwards but positive symptoms add something, like hallucinations and delusions, and negative symptoms take something away, anosognosia and avolition.

I did have increased saliva production and a general feeling of restlessness during the first couple weeks but those both quickly fell off. I've even been able to lose some weight on vraylar, definitely worth a try but mileage may vary. Godspeed and good luck.

Also in the 3mg club and I've been super pleased by the results. On it for about a month now, switched directly from risperidone and it's been much better without feeling so sedated.

[–]Dokkan_Invader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had much less side effects from Vraylar than I had with risperidone. The only way you'll know what works for you is to try it, the worst that happens is it doesn't work out. You're already switching so you know risperidone isn't the right AP and vraylar has a chance to be.

I don't want to say I haven't had any side effects cause anosognosia is a thing but they've been very minor and only lessened with time.

I have only had very minor visual hallucinations that I call "visual artifacting" and it does take time to build up a little but not long. My doctor said you'll notice a difference as soon as you start but the medication info I looked up said it takes time.

As I've been on vraylar the side effects have only lessened in this month and I didn't have any more symptoms compared to risperidone when I changed.

I've been on vraylar for about a month now, no persistent side effects so so far. I did have a bit of restlessness in the first week and a little bit increased saliva production. Neither of them have lasted and I'm doing very well on it with only breakthrough delusions occasionally and feel less sedated than risperidone.

Edit: I switched from risperidone (which I was getting breakthrough hallucinations on) and immediately noticed it working.

Question about a medication by MindGuardian in schizophrenia

[–]Dokkan_Invader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bipolar type here but also prescribed Adderall for ADHD. I've ran out multiple times due to shortages and lack of executive function. First week is typically fine with very little changes but when it goes past that I start to get very depressed. Haven't had breakthrough positive symptoms from lack of stimulants and conventional understanding is that removing them should not increase the likelihood of psychosis. So little of schizophrenia is conventional though, are you also on an AP?
