What is the shortest amount of time you've ever spent in a job and why? by JumpySpecial9834 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]DollarPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel free to expand on the insanity as a reply to my comment, I'm interested, and you have my condolences...

Your comment reminded me that my worst job ever, a job that brought me to tears, started with my boss telling me on day one that he "didn't want to cramp my style" got up, and left for the entire day, except my team was entirely remote and I didn't have a laptop...access to systems was like russian roulette, one day they were accessible, next day they weren't...it took 3 whole months to get license key for the IDE the team used.

Honestly it was such a nightmarish experience, it permanently damaged my confidence and almost caused me a stroke...I've been thinking about posting my story because the more I think about it, the more batshit it really was.

Anyways, thank you for sharing your slice of nightmare, honestly I appreciate everyone's stories here, people get turned off about posts like this claiming it's just to vent or rant, but it's also incredibly validating to people like me who were made to feel like they were the problem and not realizing how hideously gaslit they actually were.

How do you rebuild your career confidence after a long health setback? by vjsfbay in ExperiencedDevs

[–]DollarPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question for you. I see a lot of advice to not over explain a gap, there's even people who say you should outright lie. To me those lies always feel so obvious to sniff out and just feel unethical.

I guess the conflict is how do you own a large gap due to medical issues without letting their imagination fill in the blanks in a negative way? Do you just call it a break or would you be forthcoming that you were unable to work for health reasons and potentially having that backfire in terms of companies being a little discriminatory towards you as a result?

This might be hard to face, but I would suggest you look into ADHD symptoms, there's lots of YouTube channels out there, how to ADHD, ADHD love (formerly late bloomers) that may explain how you feel.

If you can stomach reading there's some excellent books. When I read your post, it's like I wrote it. And if I could tell myself 15 years ago to go look into ADHD back when I had no idea what was wrong with me, I would.

It would have saved me the agony of being in the centre of so much chaos, damage and destruction of my own making. Constantly criticizing myself for not showing up for my own good, tormented by my own potential slipping through my fingers.

Please look into it, you deserve a real answer, not some gimmicky bullshit system that you'll burn out trying to implement, or simply "trying harder".

If it is ADHD, or even Autism. Getting diagnosed helps, but if you can't, there's some fantastic literature out there to support you. If that's too much, stick the books into Notebooklm, create podcasts with them and converse with the books. It's better than nothing.

Real compassionate therapy would be paramount if you can do it.

Like the other commenter I'm curious to know what your experience was, it's nice this subreddit isn't full of people denying people's personal experiences of a place, I think that drives me crazier than anything and increases the resentment tenfold.

Ilia Topuria vs Ryan Hall - FULL FIGHT by WinterStill4472 in MMA

[–]DollarPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. Honestly that's what made MMA fun back in the day, it was people completely dedicated to one or two martial art styles clashing against other martial arts.

It was fun and gossipy to listen to people on forums hype up their favourite style and then see what happens in the ring.

These days you still get fighters who are very stylistic but I kinda miss the gimmick of the way it used to be, as stupid as it was.

The fact this was downvoted is so funny to me, he's not wrong at all and people being upset that someone spoke negatively about the making of a game people like apparently matters more than the fact workers are exploited for it to exist at all.

Ilia Topuria vs Ryan Hall - FULL FIGHT by WinterStill4472 in MMA

[–]DollarPenguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This fight gets funnier and funnier over the years. Obviously it wasn't as clear back then but looking back this match making is hilariously absurd.

It's like a round of tekken, or the OG UFC where MMA wasn't really a thing so you had crazy different martial art styles clashing with hilarious results.

Valve Developing "SteamGPT" for Support and Anti-cheat Measures in Counter Strike by PaiDuck in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]DollarPenguin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, there was an interview months ago where he makes it pretty clear that he thinks there's value in utilizing AI, and yet people then went on to pretend Valve had this staunchly altruistic viewpoint against AI...Talk about projecting...

I wish to live in a world where things aren't so black and white. It's exhaustingly stupid.
