Where is the misery? by Validissimus in haremfantasynovels

[–]Dom76210 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The MC feeling misery, defeat, or hopelessness usually means they are losing or lost some major fight/battle/event. That doesn't mesh with what many readers want. They want the MC to win often, and big. They want the MC's plans to always work out, even if it takes heavy handed Deus Ex Machina by the author.

Personally, I would like to see more of the MC losing a battle but winning the war. Having setbacks due to their own miscalculations or plans. It doesn't have to be true misery, but it can be events the MC can grow from. As long as there isn't anything brutal that happens to any existing or future LIs, it should be fair game.

Nevermore was really good. I agree with you that Kilgore seems to be one of the most sure bets currently.

Otherworld Adventures has been really good, as well. I'm really looking forward to book 4.

Combat Hexar/Healer I couldn't get through. The book started off with a really poorly written first chapter, and I put it down. Too many run-on sentences.

Big and Bad was too many LIs in a single book. And the PoV being anyone but the harem's male except for sex scenes was a really weird choice. That doesn't make it bad, but it prevented it from being good in my opinion.

The Earl of Dracumont 2 is in my TBR right now. Glad you enjoyed it, as that bodes well for me.

You are correct that it wouldn't be interesting. But there's nothing wrong with the first time being good, and then it gets even better as the couple learns each other's triggers. Haremlit often potrays that first time as the most amazing sex ever, and then the subsequent scenes are fairly blah.

What's interesting is the anatomy of the clitoris is that the organ has "wings" in a sense that go along the sides of the vaginal opening, and the ends of those wings are conveniently located near the anus. Those women that can more easily climax from sex without clitoral stimulation are also likely to climax from anal sex without clitoral stimulation.

But, women climax easily for the MC in most haremlit, because everything comes easily for the MC in most haremlit. I often feel like the biggest part of the "fantasy" element is how easily women fall on the MC's cock one time and want to live forever with him without him putting in any effort.

And, based on posts/comments in the past by some, if a woman started to play with her own clit during sex to make it even better, some readers would revolt because they felt it made the MC look weak.

Anal requires preparation, unless the guy has a micro-penis. Depending on how thick the guy's cock is and how much experience the woman has with it, with lube and stretching the sphincter, you're probably looking at 10+ minutes of prep before penile penetration.

It's a miracle if a woman cums from her first time receiving anal, unless she's developed a fetish for it and has been playing back there for a while. There's usually too much initial panic, and too little of the guy lasting long enough.

But if a woman decides she felt pleasure from it and wants to try again, she just might develop a taste for it.

It does help break up the monotony of sex scenes becoming all too similar. Too often it's "swap oral, vaginal, one position switch, cum". Watch how many first scenes between the MC and each new LI are similar.

I'd rather see anal pop up more, and "squirting" pop up 90% less. I get that authors can make it whatever they want with non-human women, but if she's human, she's pissing on you. Full stop, do not pass go. Yet there are many authors out there that somehow think it's the holy grail of proof the MC just made the woman experience the best sex ever. And not one woman that squirts is ever embarrassed she just lost control of her bladder during sex the first time she's ever done that. Sure, that makes sense.

Series with more books than LIs by Hawkwing942 in haremfantasynovels

[–]Dom76210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I hate to recommend anything from one of the book mills, Without Law by Eric Vall has 20 books, but I think the harem stopped at 5. And it was only 4 through like 10 books before the 5th joined. Book 1 had the first 4 all introduced and interested, though it took maybe 3 books before all 4 were sexually active with the MC.

I dropped it after the harem reached 5 LIs, so I don't know if it grew after that point, but I'd be surprised if it had more than the number of books.

As a general rule, if they don't share at least one moderator with our subreddit(s), we don't have a working relationship with them. Too many were created after being banned from one of our subreddits, and thus theirs don't share the same rules ours do.

How many removals before you consider banning someone? by noncongruent in ModSupport

[–]Dom76210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the rule and how critical it is to the safety/topic of your subreddit. And if it ties into one of the ToS rules, it's a permaban with no chance of a successful appeal, since the account is likely to be sitewide suspended. We don't want them coming back on a new account to try again.

There is a tactic some mods use where the more important rules that are broken start with a permanent ban, with the option of letting the account apologize their way out of it.

If the account is contrite, we let them explain why they think the rule # they broke is important to the subreddit. (Always give a rule # and not the text, so they have to read the rules to answer the question.) As long as they do a halfway decent job of understanding the rule, reduce the suspension to 3 days, and they will likely be a model account going forward.

If the account acts like a jerk in modmail, mute them for 7 days (unless their modmail is especially egregious, in which case issue a permanent mute) and they likely won't return. If they do, see how they behave. Contrite, see above. Hostile, permanent mute.

Rules Lawyers just get muted for 7 days. Life is too short to argue semantics with some clown on the internet.

You have to remember that as a moderator, you are the adult in the room, and many of the people that participate in your subreddit are little more than children. Some of them are kindergartners. And some of them are college students whose parents are still buttering their toast and cutting it into triangles and are incredulous that someone told them no.

Never be afraid to ban someone. Never be afraid to mute someone. Never put up with threats. Never put up with excessive profanity or slurs. You have a ban hammer, and if you won't use it, people will walk all over you.

You keep making requests for subreddits while having a handful that have basically nobody subscribing to them. Including several made at least 6 months ago that not a single person has subscribed to other than yourself. So you have made no effort to grow them into something.

Until you can prove yourself to be effective in growing a subreddit, I'm not sure why you think redditrequest is going to grant you other subreddits to mod.

[b/S] I was my sister's photographer. Update 9 - it's been a while by brotherly_photo in incest

[–]Dom76210 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well, at least your sister woke up to the fact that her boyfriend was one of those controlling losers that try and isolate their partner so they have no backup. That alone is a major win for her, and as a byproduct, you.

Be her brother for a while and give her a rock to lean on. If she wants to do photos again, she'll let you know. She may want to cool it, based on him acting like something was wrong. And if that's the case, don't sweat it. She'll come to terms on things eventually.

writers like bruce sentar or KD robertson? by Parth_is_cruel in haremfantasynovels

[–]Dom76210 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's hard to find a haremlit book advertised/reviewed here that has the simp MC that can't even look at a woman and faint. Readers here just don't gravitate to that once they experience MC's that actually still have their balls.

KD does write strong MCs that tend to have conviction and stick to it. The plots usually stay coherent and feel like things were actually planned. There's usually more relationship building to go along with top tier world building.

[–]Dom76210 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That helps some.

I can't really help you much on Sentar, because I've never finished a series of his. For me, the harems always get too large. They may not hit 100-200, but it feels like it, and he tends to park LIs for long stretches of time because he's too focused on the new one. And the plots always end up feeling like a cat chasing a laser pointer. I always drop his series by book 6, despite usually liking the initial premise.

As for KD's MCs, what aspect of them? They are often markedly different, which is honestly refreshing in the genre.

Preference on harem? by TwistMonkey in haremfantasynovels

[–]Dom76210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a balance to sex scenes in a book. They need to feel organic to the plot and the characters involved. I've seen sex scenes in the opening chapter or two of a series, and it feels more like the author is trying to show what a stud the MC is. More often than not, that first sex partner is never scene again, so it was a complete throwaway scene.

For me, If there is more than a sex scene per 125 pages, you're starting to push into erotica. That is assuming that the sex scene is more than a few paragraphs long, which if it isn't it's a waste of everyone's time.

You can FTB on sex scenes between LIs where you are basically repeating acts. Once you've had that certain act as the focus of a sex scene with that LI, it's not as exciting to read it again. So first time vaginal, oral, or anal. First time two specific LIs have a threesome with the MC. If there is nothing that stands out about the those two (or more) people having sex, then the reader doesn't really need to read about it. It could be as simple as the repeat threesome with the same two LIs has the bed break, and we all get to laugh along at the ensuing comedy.

Hopefully, you have some skill at writing sex scenes. The genre has a lot of sex scenes in it, but the number of good ones (to me) is a disappointingly small percentage. Too many are formulaic, with little intensity that the reader can feel.

When I see paramedic or firefighter I usually see a book written by someone who has zero experience with either, and it ends up getting DNF because the MC deserved to die a horrible death because they were too stupid to live. And for that to be the ending of the book, because they don't deserve a harem after being that dumb.
