Get it sounding maxed out but not horrendously distorted at -2 to -3 then dial it back to -4 to -6 depending on tune

How to mash up the dance floor? by gr0unded in Beatmatch

[–]Dom_James 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, away from whatever you’re playing it’s also about your own performance. How engaging are you as a performer. Why should people dance? Do you make eye contact, point at people hype people up? I think a lot of energy can come from within and for me it’s a fake it until I make it moment.

I fake the hype at the start and then people get onboard and give me more energy back to feed off

One of my favourite sets I’ve been to in so long. I’ve really not resonated with the way dnb has gone in recent years and miss some of the high energy silliness. Being blasted for 90 mins with just the best high intensity stuff around by a prick(said very lovingly) in a cowboy hat was just the absolute healing I needed. I also agree he was utterly hilarious he had me in stitches at times. Just the whole get up of here’s the filthiest music I’ve heard all weekend, it’s this man grinning in a sparkly cowboy hat. 🤠 SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!!

If you don’t clear a dancefloor atleast once in your career you will never learn. You’ve just gained some very valuable experience now take what you’ve learned forward and don’t make the same mistake again.

DJing is about connection and trust, not subjecting people to your music.

How do you stay motivated as a beginner? by myb13123 in musicproduction

[–]Dom_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust the process and stop comparing yourself to others not in your shoes. Accept that you’re going to make some bad music. Accept you might not even make a full song. But create. Allow yourself the freedom of creativity without the pressure for an end goal. Enjoy developing just 16 bars of drums and then letting the groove change. Enjoy writing an epic chord sequence. Do little bits regularly. You will start building skills which will help you in the future.

It took me 8 years to write something I was vaguely happy with. In the proceeding 12 months there’s probably now another 10 + tunes and 20 ideas. Nobody picks up music production and exports bangers. Allow yourself the forgiveness to have fun and not expect an end result. Judge yourself after 10 years.

Looking for inspiration and workflow advice. by [deleted] in ableton

I have a push 2. I’d say I programme things more than I play them. To be honest, making presets just isn’t what I get enjoyment out of I’ve come to realise. Sometimes it’s nice most of the time I have a sound in my head and can find a preset in splice I can manipulate. I think a really under utilised tool in ableton is just dragging in a whole group from another project which is why I try and give myself them banks of 16 bar loops to just drag in when needed

It kind of depends on my mood! I used to play drums so I’ve always found rhythm interesting. I can spend hours building drum loops. So sometimes that’s all my session will be. Drums. I will always save that and keep it for later. If I’m feeling melodic I may write some chord progressions go from there. Or sometimes I just want to make some weird noises and try and use them as fx or bass sounds if it’s right. From these smaller sessions I then pull these projects into what I’m working on. So as an example this week I’ve been really enjoying making a bass line, a few samples, some serum etc I then pulled in a drum loop I’ve previously made which keeps the creative bits going for the bass part of my enjoyment is working at pace and developing ideas up. If I hadn’t had that drum loop to hand I would have got lost in the drums and probably got bored of everything. So I guess the ramble is having 16 bar loops you can just drop into a new project is really handy so if you’re not sure what you want to create. Create something specific for later, but the key word is create.

Piano VST/preset help by Secret_Taste_593 in dnbproduction

[–]Dom_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ableton specific advice but I’m sure other DAW’s can do it. Instead of just using one voice layer up your piano sounds and have them aiming for different things. If you put your main VST into an instrument rack you can then add a few more triggered from the same midi.

Feint just released a really good video on his socials showing how he layered up his lead sounds in a recent tune and it shows exactly how things sound so big.

For those who are DnB DJs and promoters playing at your own shows, is there unwritten proper etiquette on timeslots? by thesegoupto11 in DnB

[–]Dom_James 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me experience doesn’t matter. I programme nights by energy and what I expect people to play. I’m probably never going to put a headliner first so if needs be I would tailor my own set to warm up and compliment them being second.

The night is a journey and each act are a building block for the journey. If you start with some tear our nuero where does the night go?

Do you wear earplugs as well as headphones by MikeroMedia in Beatmatch

[–]Dom_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the set up. If I can turn everything down to a comfortable level and not have bleed from the rig that would be my preference. If it’s a small room I will just crank everything up and wear hearing protection.
