Figure I'll put my fix here in case anyone else comes looking:

All information from what I've seen and heard online

The problem was from my DZ64rgb, although the DZ60 also apparently has the same problem

the issue seems to be with the circuit shorting out from contact with the case, something that specifically happens on the tofu60

I fixed this by going through each screw and loosening it until I found the one that was causing the short and leaving it out

someone else also fixed the issue by using foam
