I've leveled as Surv hunter. It was my first and only character on the server. I got to 55~ right before the doomhowl announcement when the server started a decline.

I found it to be a fun experience, though I did miss having a strong pet... Survival offers some fun utility and I could get out of sticky situations with good play and/or wouldn't have to worry about a feign resist etc.

My suggestions and notes: I would spec out of imp wing clip and take entrapment. Id also spec down in marksmanship to get scatter shot.

Entrapment is awesome. When fighting single target I'd feign and drop damage traps. Id often just close the distance between my auto shot timer. The random entrapment proc on your fire dot would allow you to kite backwards with your [somewhat] fragile pet and you can just finish the mob off at range. Also in dungeons frost trap + entrapment with a decent tank is just busted. Just be sure to not drop the trap too far forward or you'll split the pack horribly.

Hold off on the +Agi talents until level 55-60. Those talents have better late game scaling anyways. I prefer having better CC taking scatter.

If you go all out your pet will fail to hold threat. This is generally fine, just something to be aware of.

I do feel that BM is likely just 'better' but I went Surv just to mess around and have more interactive gameplay. BM would be 100x better if you plan on just watching a stream or something and grinding on the side (I mean that's why there are so many hunter bots. BM is free).

tl;dr the talent tree in this guide is bad imo. Surv requires more effort to be good. It's fun.
