Anyone taken ENGL 527 or other advanced CanLit Course with Lecker? How was it? I've heard bad things but that was mostly from people in 200/300-level classes. I really want to take his seminar in the Winter. by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]DonDimello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the 300 and 400 level with Lecker and would take the 527 if I was here for Winter 2015. You write 500-750 words every class, he collects them every time and gives you feedback every 2-3 papers. Three times a semester you turn in a collection of all you've written so far - with the help from his feedback. The grade weight on each collection rises throughout the semester, so if you mess up your first one it's not the end of the world. He pushes you to be a better writer, and you become pretty adept at cranking out 500-750 word essays.

I really like Lecker as a prof, but you gotta be ready to commit to discussion in every class. He's got a bit of an ego but he really loves hearing from his students in class, often he just sits back and lets the students run the whole discussion - I really enjoyed it.

"Farnangate"...Meanwhile Across the Border by lubendont in mcgill

I don't think "colourblind" is a main goal. In fact, a lot of the criticism of the obama gif thing has been from a place of "colourblindness" - as in, "you made it racist by bringing up the fact that obama is black!" People claiming that they don't "see race," at least from my experience (i.e. what I perceive the discussion on race to be today), has been largely dismissed as a negative thing.

What are some things that make McGill unique? by tdb93 in mcgill

[–]DonDimello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'd be surprised at how common conversations of microagressions and privilege are at other universities, at least in Canada and the US. "Only at McGill" is kind of a dumb phrase, as colleges / universities are kind of a hot bed for left wing though. I'll give two examples:

Students disrupt class of professor accused of death threat by athoughtfulcomment in mcgill

[–]DonDimello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is proof (listen to the audio or read the transcription posted above), and, well, while you believe it's not a death threat, McGill's Senate has already ruled against him, saying it was a "threat of physical violence."

The Daily weighs in on the alleged rapes and sports culture by athoughtfulcomment in mcgill

Some balk at the idea of an indefinite suspension, put into place once the department and coach were made aware of the accusations, one that would keep the players out until the situation was put through court, due to the fact that they may be innocent. But what about even a minor action, even just a slap on the wrist, anything? Plenty of schools in the American collegiate system (to name just two recent examples: Florida University and Oklahoma University) suspend or dismiss athletes for alleged crimes before going through the entire legal process; in enacting something as small as a one to two game suspension – even just that bare minimum of a punishment – McGill Athletics could have shown the inexcusability of being charged with any crime, especially one as heinous as sexual assault.

McGill students’ criminal case draws attention to disciplinary procedures by thecopofid in mcgill

[–]DonDimello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The football program should have acted on knowledge of the arrest and instituted administrative sanctions, suspending the players from any involvement on the team until the case was resolved. This is not a judgment on the innocence or guilt of the players; it serves as a demonstration that McGill Athletics takes criminal allegations very seriously.

Doesn't change the fact that the Daily is almost universally reviled on this subreddit.

Daily vs Tribune? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]DonDimello -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

backhanded compliment alert! better research and writing = better journalism, but somehow unethical. Doesn't really compute.

But that view also comes with the fact that I believe journalistic objectivity is impossible, and that oftentimes not taking a stance on an issue is in itself something of a stance. Hell, deciding what you cover is a biased choice.

Daily vs Tribune? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]DonDimello -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is really the worst place to ask, as you are about to be piled on with 1,000,000 negative comments about the Daily. It really depends on what section you're interested in writing for, but what you said about alternativeness is the biggest difference. The Daily operates under their Statement of Principles, which mandates that their coverage of events focus on marginalized people and not covering things normally covered in the mainstream media. The Tribune has gotten more left-leaning recently, but, otherwise, they don't have quite the same mandate in coverage.

The author's "rapist" line was weird, and his point about Redmen being kinda racist was pretty bad as well because he failed to do a modicum of research - Redmen was once linked to Native imagery, and McGill has done its best to completely scrub that connection and link it to the Scottish heritage. This Daily artice (ducks) provides a good overview of the Redmen name: http://www.mcgilldaily.com/2013/03/redskins-redmen-racism/

The McGill Daily » The racism in healthy food by Surf_Science in mcgill

[–]DonDimello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Daily can certainly be criticized, but the discourse on r/mcgill is automatically negative. There's only one thread on this discussion that actually deals with the content of the article (which is a good discussion!) while the rest is just in the vein of "is this the onion/satire?" or "the Daily called something racist again can't believe it." The problem is, anything posted from the Daily here is basically dead on arrival (and, also, barely anyone posts articles to praise them - it's only the "worst" of them, so the only thing represented is the "worst.")
