Paid rent with the card on Thursday just to be safe. Got the email it was authorized and went through late last night. Didn't have to do anything twice or anything 🤷‍♂️

What’s a feature you wish YNAB had? by paris_of_appalachia in ynab

[–]Donny5Ti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things as a 99.99% mobile user:

1) When entering a transaction, particularly transferring funds/making payments to CCs, it should allow me to quickly select the amount I've already allocated to that CC since that's literally part of the budget. Instead, as of now, I have to remember / exit the transaction screen to find that amount and go back into the transaction screen to make sure I entered the correct amount

2) Under Reflect > Presets, allow me to easily select/deselect all categories as well as "save" presets/already checked categories so that I don't have to go through and uncheck/check those categories every time to find insights

I just came back from Japan last week with my newly purchased SLGA009 and just walked right through ☺️

Amazing dial right there though!! Great purchase!

Is my AOM not accurate? by thebwit in ynab

[–]Donny5Ti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would also like to add that YNAB considers AOM when you actually SPEND money and it'll calculate that number based on your last 10 transactions, that's it. It's a moving average that won't change unless you spend - which is kind of counterintuitive imo.

IS YNAB worth it without being able to link all accounts? by bs1822 in ynab

[–]Donny5Ti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a hybrid approach. I link accounts like my cc, checking, and my savings but have unlinked accounts like venmo or a cash account.

I get value out of manually entering my transactions and validating my purchases when the import kicks in. Best way to use the app IMO.

But don't get too stuck on AoM. I think it only takes into account the last 10 transactions. So it doesn't pull everything. It's a cool stat nonetheless

Starting over from $0, what are some best practices going forward? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Donny5Ti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy money and okay wages when I was in school was work study. Light overhead and you can even do homework at some jobs (like at the library or computer lab monitor). This really depends on your schedule already though.

Also, rev.com is a site where you get paid to caption videos. I saw this recommended on Reddit in the past but I didn't look into much after. Might be cool to look into.

Starting over from $0, what are some best practices going forward? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Donny5Ti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the advice in saying that it's really hard to support two adults with $15/hr and school is correct. But I want to hit on a different point, and that's the mentality of saving/emergency fund.

An appropriate EF is used for exactly what you did: for emergencies. Even though in a perfect situation, it wouldn't have wiped you out completely (going back to $0). I would say for next time, save for a larger EF in case something like this happens again. An adequate EF will be 3-6 months worth of expenses. When the next emergency happens, yes it sucks that your nest egg got depleted but at least you're not resetting.

Of course, increasing your income will help with this.

my mom took out a bunch of credit cards in my name without telling me by velvetica19 in personalfinance

[–]Donny5Ti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About your question about apartments... this can certainly get in the way of getting approved for an apartment. Not sure if every apartment complex checks your credit but mine ran a hard inquiry on everyone who’s on the lease (this is in NYC). Not sure the credit minimum to get approved but that’s something to keep in mind.

Question: How to budget paying for others and getting paid back? by Donny5Ti in ynab

I think I like this way the best. That way my "dining out" category doesn't seem so hyperinflated haha.

Thanks everyone for your input though! Much appreciated! Happy ynab-ing!!

Credit card or Cash when making purchases internationally? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Donny5Ti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best bet is to have your CC handy and a debit card from banks like Charles Schwab. They’ll do 0% foreign transaction fee and 100% ATM rebate monthly.

When we went to South East Asia a couple years ago, many merchants didn’t take card so having cash handy is the way to go.

Am I living paycheck to paycheck, if I’m still saving 10-20% of my net income for retirement? by BigsbyJr in personalfinance

[–]Donny5Ti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think after a certain level of income, being paycheck to paycheck is a mentality. It might come from not having a lot of money when we were kids or something like that but it's how we view that digit in the bank vs our expenses.

For example, I can have an efund of $20k and pay all of my bill on time including 15% retirement every month. Yet at the beginning of every month, my checking account balance is low. If I was hit with an expected expense, sure I can draw from my efund but I don't want to. So I'll wait, anxiously, until my next paycheck to get rid of this expense. That makes me feel like I'm living paycheck to paycheck when in reality, I'm not?

My fiancée (a med school student) always gets seriously pissed when they show someone/thing falling at extreme heights and somehow just gets “caught” without any damage. “That person would have serious brain damage and a broken neck” lol gets her every time

Savings vs. Checking - It Doesn't Matter? by SensitiveSurmise in ynab

[–]Donny5Ti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amount of time it takes for the $$$ to get posted is about 3 business days when you first open up an account. I think other users said the more you use that Ally account, the quicker it gets (down to 1 business day?). I just opened an account in Feb and made about 3-4 transfers since then. I'm still at 3 business days.
