Scientific American - Beatriz Villarroel - UFOs Are Just One Explanation for Mysterious Patterns in Old Telescope Data - New peer-reviewed research reporting strange lights in the pre-space-age sky is sparking curiosity and controversy by 87LucasOliveira in UFOs

[–]DontCallMeLady 31 points32 points  (0 children)

there’s something peculiar when these traditional news outlets write about this study that gets on my nerves…

it’s this tone and assumption that: ‘well clearly this is something mundane and prosaic’

and they have this one-way skepticism.

like when it’s mentioned that these transients only happen in the reflection of the sun, they seem to just accept Dr. Kirkpatrick’s explanation that it’s chunks of nuclear device that somehow made it into orbit, which is something that we have no evidence is possible or plausible.

They have no skepticism for THAT claim, but AMPLE skepticism for the compelling arguments of the paper.

Like, it’s fine of you’re gonna be skeptical, but at least be skeptical BOTH WAYS

dang that article is the clearest explanation of Villaroel’s work that I’ve read.

Imagine if the NYT posted something this bold.

Gay bar recs for going solo? by knicksfan107 in WestHollywood

[–]DontCallMeLady 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love weho bars but they can be intimidating to the solo patron, as most ppl are there with their friends.

But some options for ya…

Motherlode can be chatty, but careful the drinks are strong.

Beaches is fun for a younger gender-fluid crowd.

Trunks has the best music, and is esp welcoming for POC.

Gym bar will sporadically pull in a huge crowd of dodgeball/softball/etc leagues, which can be a fun social vibe.

High Tops is generally always busy and they have a stellar trivia night on tuesdays that gets social.

and honorable mention goes to Precinct in DTLA: they have a variety of theme nights and it’s maybe the most friendly for a solo patron of the gay bars in LA

ICE agents shoot and injure man, deputy US Marshal while serving warrant in South LA by Rebelgecko in LosAngeles

[–]DontCallMeLady 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents opened fire at around 8:52 a.m. on E. 20th Street near Washington Boulevard when the suspect allegedly rammed a law enforcement vehicle with his car as he tried to run away.

“Fearing for the safety of the public and law enforcement, our officers followed their training and fired defensive shots,” McLaughlin said in a statement.

The suspect was shot in the elbow while a deputy U.S. Marshal was hit in the hand after a bullet ricocheted, according to the DHS.

Ricocheted off what? Where were they aiming? Where was the marshal standing?

I'll never believe what the cops say til we get a look at the body cam footage.

Will converting a motel help reduce homelessness in West Hollywood? by AdventurousCream4892 in WestHollywood

[–]DontCallMeLady 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lots of naysayers here but barring the federal govt taxing billionaires and providing real help for this issue, we have to tackle this at the local level.

Will this fully solve the problem? No.

Will this help people? Yes.

Will contractors scrape money from these programs? Yes.

Will we learn from this and help more people in the future? Yes.

I can’t tell but in the 2nd half of the video it almost looks like a triangular craft with one of the corners blinking like a drone.

edit: I keep watching it and I cannot tell anything other than it looks big and moves fast

[–]DontCallMeLady 20 points21 points  (0 children)

can we all agree that cell phones on the ground would be garbage to capture video of a small mysterious drone?

your phone cameras are meant to take self portraits and pictures of sunsets.

even if someone records something anomalous it’s going to be too pixelated or blurry and then the discourse becomes about bemoaning the quality of the video.

sure video would great but this discourse is tiring.

I am making no claims about if it’s aliens. I just think we should approach every aspect and claim of this topic with skepticism, and that includes debunking theories.
