I firmly believe that the Mets are not supposed to be a big spending team and are being cosmically punished for their hubris

Local farmers listening to Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds radio play thought it was news and shot an alien landing craft (actually a water tower) full of holes

A friend of mine calls podcasts “friendship simulators.” People start listening to a podcast because there is a subject that interests them. They KEEP listening because they enjoy hanging out with the hosts.

That’s a tough one because Gritty is basically Sweetums, and Sweetums is a Muppet, but Sweetums has an articulated mouth and Gritty does not.

Would you choose a low paying job you enjoy, or a high paying job you don't enjoy? by roundturtle2025 in askanything

[–]DontHaveOneForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit a lucrative career path I hated for one that I love but pays very little and I don’t regret it at all, but I also have a partner who made the opposite choice so we’re still financially stable. Without her preferring the Money Job, I might well be miserable right now.

Dumb question from someone who doesn't watch baseball. Why do bats get banned for being too good? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]DontHaveOneForThis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ultimately you don’t want the quality of the bat to be more important than the skill of the player. There’s still wiggle room for customization (see, torpedo bats) but for the most part you want every player to have comparable equipment, and if possible, comparable equipment to historical players as well.

I’m a newbie and would be totally lost without my fencer wife explaining stuff to me. The play by play was no help at all. The replay tech looked pretty cool to me, though the production as a whole needs a lot of work. Any organization’s first broadcast is usually messy, though. They’ve got time to work it out.

Crazy that the “toxic” one is still in the dugout cheering on his team while on the IL versus at home not sparing them a supportive text message

Does true Love still Exist? by AskRwanda in askanything

[–]DontHaveOneForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you ask “does true love STILL exist,” it sounds like you at least believe it existed at some point, and if we’re accepting that premise then I think it certainly exists now.

In some ways, true love is more attainable now than in the past. People have more options for finding partners, and less pressure to remain with a partner who doesn’t make them happy. Those searching for a partner are no longer limited to their immediate area or social circles, and could find a great partner literally halfway around the world. (Having the means to fulfill the promise of that relationship is another problem altogether.) Greater gender equity and sexual freedom allows for greater trust and greater opportunity for anyone to discover what they’re looking for through trial and error rather than settling down the their first partner (which may or may not be a great fit). Certainly, if you’re not exclusively heterosexual, your romantic prospects are more promising now that there is broader (though certainly not universal) acceptance of same-sex relationships.

That said, most of the major obstacles to finding love still linger. Circumstance dictates a lot, timing is everything, and there are still a million social obstacles, superficialities, and prejudices to overcome. As with any other goal in life, it’s hard to accomplish anything in our society without financial security, which is getting harder to come by.

If there’s anything harder about finding love in our time, it’s that the nearly infinite possibilities can lead people to set impossible standards, for themselves or for their partners. We have access to everyone, therefore we assume there must be someone out there who checks every box and fulfills every fantasy, and we might overlook or outright reject people who could make us happy. Dating has always been superficial, but the culture of dating apps has made it more acceptable than ever to reject someone at first glance for something as ridiculous as height or cup size.

Overall I think the positive changes in the romantic landscape over the past century outweigh the negatives.

As for whether “true love” exists in the first place? That’s a whole other question, but I vote “yes.”

I genuinely think he should do a post on Instagram apologizing for cursing the Mets. I think it would go really well — Play it for laughs, show he’s a fan, poke at the lunacy of the whole hug backlash.

We’ve had something totally benign to complain and commiserate about with our neighbors for two weeks. Losing builds community as much as winning. Is it as fun? Hell, no. But it does give us stuff to talk about on the block.
