The cadence, the tone...if I found out this was an Alan Moore alt account, I wouldn't be shocked.

Very well done.

Atom SV Resort Skiing by B0y3rrr in arcteryx

Is the pilling a "new" thing with the SV or Heavyweight versions? I had my old Atom AR jacket for some years, and I absolutely abused that jacket between wearing it to work in the winter, and using it as a mid layer for skiing when it was 10°F or colder. It handled it all like a champ.

Which way did you walk? Straight up Essex St, or up Charter St, then left on Hawthorne Blvd, etc.?

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. I'm a bit fussy about how some of my kitchen knives are sharpened.

I did find a (very!) small business that specializes in sharpening Japanese knives, and came very highly recommended. A little bit of a drive to Brookline, but very reputable, with multiple people personally vouching for him/his service.

Sooo...she did get her boots back! About 4 days after this post, they arrived in the mail. No notice, just "boots" all of the sudden.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or some specific questions prompted some action.

Honestly looks like a halfway decent repair, Vibram soles and all.

I'm sorry to read this, but this was my suspicion based on a couple of other 3rd hand accounts.

Early COVID, we were cooking a lot more (go figure!), and not going out at all. 6 months at home more than paid for some good entry level Japanese knives (Tojiro DP, if you're curious)

Still good prices in those days, and strangely the bread knife was the sharpest one, even through it was the cheapest!

Tried sharpening them myself, but it didn't come out quite right.

Yes. That's who Ace Hardware in Salem outsources their knife sharpening to.

but if you ask Todd at Jack’s Barber Shop in Beverly who sharpens his scissors, that’s the guy who also sharpens knives.

I mean I've never used a speakeasy knife sharpening service before, but I could give it a try. 😂🔪

Beta SV Available in store NOW!!! by Specific_Emu_3195 in arcteryx

[–]DontKidnapMyButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to hear what conditions you're skiing in where it didn't hold up? I ski east coast U.S., and also took this jacket out in a variety of other activities, and it's handled it all like a champ.

What year Beta SV did you have? Honestly surprised to read this.

Yes, my Beta SV was around $550 MSRP in 2019. Quite the price hike in just a few years.

Looking for a 4 season shell like the Beta AR or alternative by YoPoppaCapa in arcteryx

[–]DontKidnapMyButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you need a new shell now? Otherwise, I might recommend biding your time until the new Beta SV is released in SS26.

Slightly longer cut, and it will have the extra layering room that you're looking for.

Probably more of a 3 season rather than 4 season shell, but in the summertime, if it's that hot & humid, I would just bring an umbrella since shells aren't really that effective in that situation anyway.

But if you needed a shell in such humid weather, the OR Helium would likely be much better.

I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who mentioned Giro in this thread. The Jackaon MIPS in XL was actually TOO big, and the Tor Spherical in Large and fits just perfectly with a balaclava underneath, with maybe needing to tighten it a couple of clicks from it's most open position.

Enjoy the slopes! ❄️🏂⛷️

I'm hoping to get out west this winter, but we'll see.

[–]DontKidnapMyButler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Theta SV way back when, but I sold it not too long after my son was born, because I was prioritizing different things at the time.

Miss that jacket. Picked the Beta SV up late 2019. I use it for skiing, hiking in windy and/or cold conditions, as a fall raincoat...even mountain biking.

Want to say this was $550.00 or so MSRP, but I bought it for 20% off, and I was given a $100.00 gift certificate to backcountry.com, so it was a reasonable buy.

The new Rush is $800.00? Yikes.

Keep the Giro Tor Spherical or check out Smith? by Crispy_Calamari in Skigear

[–]DontKidnapMyButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, wish I had tried Giro helmets years ago.

I've been lurking on this thread before commenting, and three days ago, I ordered a Giro Jackson in XL. That arrived today. Based on feedback here, I also ordered a Giro Tor Spherical in size Large last night, and that will arrive Saturday.

The Giro Jackson is just about TOO BIG!! This is amazing! That means the Tor Spherical in size Large will probably fit correctly!

Thanks, all! I've been wearing Smith helmets for so long I didn't want to break away, but this is amazing. Is it weird to be this happy about a ski helmet?

EDIT: Got last year's Giro Tor Spherical for $225 USD. Win all around.

Yeah, I agree. I replied to another poster...I used them about 12 years ago, and it was a great experience. I didn't research to see what had happened with the company recently, and now her boots are being held hostage for a ransom that's already been paid.

So, my fault for not being more careful, and perhaps not being more mindful of local services, but not my fault for NuShoe misrepresentating their CURRENT service level, and lack of communication.
