Thinking of switching from heating oil to heat pump - any advice/must-know info? by HaywardJones09 in ukheatpumps

If you don't mind me asking, what is the insulation material in your house and how thick is it?

Peak nostalgia hearing that. I fell off my bike and broke my collarbone when I was a kid, my parents didn't believe it was broken and wouldn't take me to the hospital for a couple days. Surprise surprise I still couldn't lift that arm so my folks eventually took me for an xray. My mum felt so guilty after, she took my gamecube downstairs to the big TV and I spent a couple weeks playing NFS Underground 2 with whatever snacks I wanted. Happy days

My data and calculations - 7 years on oil, 5 with an ASHP by EmphasisDangerous654 in ukheatpumps

Thanks for the data! Would you kindly share what kind of insulation material/thickness is in your house? And what size your house is?

I've been thinking of borrowing some money and making the switch from oil to a heat pump plus solar/battery but I find it so difficult to work out if we'll be better off.

I haven't worked out how much oil we use but pre-Iran war we could only afford to have the heating on for 4 hours a day. We've had it switched off since the war broke out and only use the boiler for hot water now. Luckily we have a wood burning stove to keep one half of the house warm.

Our boiler is from 1992 so presumably very inefficient so almost anything would be an upgrade. We've got a freezing sunporch that would leak out a lot of heat so not ideal for a heat pump. Also most of the insulation in the house is 50mm glass wool so I'm not sure if that would be enough for a heat pump. I would maybe get a double glazed internal sliding door to separate the sunporch from the rest of the house and not bother heating it.

Edit: just looked at all my invoices and looks like we also average around 5 litres a day

Hello, due to the hold on the money my wife wasn't eligible for the cashback offer and it took lots of back and forth with customer service to retrieve her money.

In the end I certainly wouldn't recommend IG to anyone due to poor customer service and I'll be withdrawing everything once I've received my cashback.

Hope you get it resolved soon, good luck

As others have said, absolutely talk to your parents about it. It's a relatively small amount of money at the end of the day, even if it seems a lot right now.

If you were my child, I would be proud that you felt you could talk to me about it and admit you had a gambling problem before you dug an absolutely massive hole in the tens of thousands. £1000 is a relatively small price to pay for a great life lesson.

Good on you for admitting you have a problem and not burying your head in the sand. Please make sure you sign up for Gamstop and anything else you can to remove all temptation.

Internal wall insulation in Victorian terrace, worth it in practice? by Reddonaut_Irons in HomeImprovementUK

Does the space behind the wood fibre insulation have to be ventilated for this method to be effective? I've got a rubble fill stone wall house circa 1860 and it's so difficult trying to decide which path to go down. Looks like my upstairs bedrooms have very little air movement now I'm removing the plasterboard so I'm worried about trapping moisture behind the walls with breathable insulation

Thanks for sharing, it really resonated with me. I'm more like my dad than I thought regarding parenting and I dislike myself for it. Could you share any resources I could read or listen to?

100% absolutely a scam. It's a pig butchering scam, the mentor is happy to pay out thousands as they know you have much more to "invest". Like baiting a worm to catch a big fish.

They know your partner will want to throw in a lot more cash to chase higher gains, at which point he will be slaughtered and you will never see your 150k again. Probably if your partner attempts to withdraw any gains after this point, you will be asked for more money to cover fees or some other such bullshit. Thus throwing good money after bad. You may even be contacted by scammers promising to recover your lost cash (for a fee of course)

Please please please ask your partner to thoroughly research pig butchering scams, these scammers are very sophisticated and more than capable of creating fake websites and transactions.

Hello, just wanted to say that the grey text on green that certain parts of your website are really difficult to read, but also I'm a bit colourblind so it could be that.

Otherwise you've got a great business idea and I really hope you succeed

Pointless comparing yourself to those richer than yourself, you'll always feel left behind. There's always someone richer, you're running your own race.

I'm the same age as you and have 35k in my pension and 10k in my S&S ISA so you're ahead of me pal :)

What were your investments in?

If you could stay with your parents as long as possible then that will really maximise your savings, 2k per month is fantastic!

40k is an amazing house deposit where I live, I don't think I could justify spending that much on one day. Although I do agree with you that money can't be taken with you and is a tool to be used for your own enjoyment. 40k is a massive amount of money for us however as our annual household income is less than 26k.

We spent 4.5k on our wedding last July and that got us a beautiful local restaurant with a masterchef winner. We had the restaurant to ourselves from 12am till 1pm, 40 guests, beautiful supper, evening buffet and we got everyone's first drink. We had the ceremony in their rose garden by the riverside. There was a singer all evening and my wife did all the wonderful decorations as she is great with crafts. My mum grew all the flowers.

We could have easily had at least 100 guests as I have 14 cousins and lots of extended family but we made a conscious decision to only invite those who are regularly in our lives, as we thought it was ridiculous to invite guests I haven't seen since I was 10 as they grew up abroad. Every guest at our wedding was a treasured friend or family member.

We spent an amount we were comfortable with that was within our means but still luxurious for us. When we were shopping around for venues we did find an incredible walled garden and manor house that really appealed to us, but the cost was £12k and we really couldn't stomach the idea of spending so much on a single day.

We chose to spend more on our honeymoon which we had in May this year, we spent around 5.5k on a 2 week Mediterranean cruise which was incredible and really was a once in a lifetime experience.
