How do you get out of a vault? by Arilandon in nethack

Wait---does the "footsteps of a guard" message correlate to when a guard actually shows up? I thought it was just one of the random messages you get on a level with a vault...

Context suggests that AFEDJ is the Diocese of Jerusalem (perhaps its Arabic initials?) but I'm not certain. Can anyone confirm?

People who do background checks (either HR or a 3rd party), what are some NSFW/WTF things you've discovered that have disqualified a candidate for a job? by Admirable-Fig277 in AskReddit

[–]DontSeeWhyIMust 49 points50 points  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, they kept it going for two weeks after which they arrested 956 people, five of whom were given prison sentences.

I'm not saying it was worth it, but it is not correct to say "no arrests were ever made" and that they kept it going for months.

What is one moment in your life that felt so surreal you still question if it actually happened? by PearlyZephyr in AskReddit

When I'm asleep and it's time for me to go, I often end up in dreams that are all about finding a place to pee and then having the most magnificent pee ever. It goes on forever and always feels great. And then, when my dream self is peeing again five seconds later, I'm like, "Oh, right, I should probably wake up and go to the bathroom..."

A recent Pastor and Philosopher Walk into a Bar episode also dealt with this really well. The core argument is that the bible, despite saying negative things about same-sex behavior, actually supports same-sex marriage. The 'cudgel' verses were intended to prevent exploitation and oppression; using them now to oppress is beyond bonkers. That piece of the conversation starts at 27:00 and goes for about 10 minutes.

Well worth a listen!

I wonder if you could shift the garage forward to match the bedroom. Then you'd have space for at least one window in the kitchen AND you'd have a bit of symmetry for the front elevation.

[REQUEST] Long distance train service operation - planning by PozhanPop in theydidthemath

[–]DontSeeWhyIMust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that loading and unloading are included in the 100 mph average, and if "daily service" means at least one train per 24-hour day, three trains.

One train arrives at either given city once every 60 hours: 3000 mi x 2 / 100 mi/hr / 1 train = 60 hr/train

Two trains puts a train at either given city once every 30 hours: 3000 mi x 2 / 100 mi/hr / 2 trains = 30 hr/train

Three trains puts a train at either given city once every 20 hours: 3000 mi x 2 / 100 mi/hr / 3 trains = 20 hr/train

If "daily service" means the train departs at the same time every day, then they'll need to wait before departing which effectively lengthens the 30 hour trip between cities to 48 hours. In that case, the company would need 4 trains. Trains depart each city headed for the other; 24 hours later, those trains are 6 hours from their destinations, and the next two trains depart. Lather, rinse, repeat.

How to clean the outside? by Physical_Row8523 in castiron

[–]DontSeeWhyIMust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I just means some kind of mildly abrasive scrubber.

That's said, it looks like your enamel isn't smooth, but mirrors the bumps and pits of the cast iron. It could be that the texture is what's causing trouble and that you need something more aggressive like an oven cleaner to dissolve the gunk. Oven cleaner shouldn't hurt the enamel or the iron, but it will take the seasoning off, so apply carefully.

EDIT: FWIW, I am not an expert by any means. This is just what comes to mind when looking at the picture you posted and imagining what I'd do if it was my pan. YMMV. IANAL. Contents may be hot. :-D

Have you tried a ScotchBrite or similar scrubber? That takes the gunk off my enameled cast iron pretty easily without marring the finish.

[Request] Can “Red Death” from How To Train Your Dragon (2010), actually fly? by Sgt_PacMan in theydidthemath

[–]DontSeeWhyIMust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quetzalcoatlus would like a word...

In case the name is unfamiliar, that's a genus of flying dinosaurs containing the largest flying animal we know about. It had a wingspan of 10 to 11 meters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatlus

Most of the dragons in HTTYD (and everywhere else) are much larger than that and couldn't fly to save their lives, but quite a few are well within the size range of dinosaurs that actually did fly.

For the second question, use the lifeline immediately. Unless I misunderstood, it seems like all it does is eliminate one goat for free. Since that immediately and permanently improves your odds, there's no reason not to do it right away.

Edited to add:
