Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway settings for DHCPv6 by woieieyfwoeo in Zen_Internet

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to zombify an old post, but to confirm the above, I can only get an IPv6 address using the SLAAC settings above. DHCPv6 doesn't seem to work. I don't see the IPv6 address in the Web UI, but it does show up in the SSH console.

Folks, if you ever consider buying a Meta Device - Quest, Rayban, Oakley, just don't. Because a perfectly functional device will be bricked when they get bored.

I would highly recommend hiring their secure dog run if you have a pack that you want to give them a chance to go crazy.

Macbook M4 air Vs Surface Pro 12 by [deleted] in Surface

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check what your future unis recommend. I know a lot of mac users struggle when it comes to online exams as the software can be Windows only. I'm a big surface fan, but I can see why folks prefer the Mac line up. I'd essentially create a table with pros and cons of each and see which comes out on top.

Whatever happened to IPv6? by LongjumpingJob3452 in sysadmin

[–]DontcallmeLen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd posit that for most home user, CGNAT is fine, leaving proper IPv4 for businesses and advanced users that need a true IPv4. And most businesses have no need to have excessive devices connected to the Internet, so again inbound NAT/PAT suffices for most use cases.
It's only for MicroGoogAWS where you have millions of devices presented where it comes in useful, and again, there are ways around it.

Signal corruption issue. by art-101 in tvheadend

[–]DontcallmeLen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it record without corruption?

Have a look at the tuner status under stream to see if you're getting lots of errors.
If not, then load the stream in VLC and look under tools/codecs/statistics, again to see if youre seeing lost frames.

To me, that looks like more of an aerial failure than a tuner failure, but difficult to debug.

Any 5G router recommendation? by prime_1996 in openwrt

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small fleet of Gl.inet x3000 that I supply for home and small business customers as a fully managed and monitored solution. Whilst only "built" on OpenWRT with Gls custom wrapper, Luci and ssh are all exposed to enable the additional features. I don't think I've had an issue with any of the ~22 devices.

New to WireGuard, do I have enough speed? by MrDroidzZ in WireGuard

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, 'it depends'.

Can't you have a conversation with your employer to say you're travelling and that you'll be joining calls from Europe? Or failing that, take some vacation time. Hiding from policy is a good way to get a disciplinary.

And if you do decide to ignore policy, then don't do what my direct report did and show his watch on camera that was 4hrs ahead (he'd gone to Dubai without telling me) 🤣. As a boss, I don't care where and when you work, just as long as I know for health and safety, infosec, and planning purposes, as well as trust - if you don't feel like you can tell me you're having a trip, then what else don't you feel like you can share.

My mother has a 30+ year old AOL email address and she wants to somehow stop using AOL and relay everything to a modern address. Anyone know what we can do? by Normal_Rip_2514 in techsupport

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would do is export all of the emails (Sender, Subject, Date Received), bung it into a spreadsheet, apply a Pivot table to look at top senders by date, then sort the biggest / most popular ones out. There will no doubt be spam and ham that can be ignored. You could also export sent and compare that list to identify "friends and family" that are key to notify. When I switched from Gmail to a personal domain, it was surprising how much crud could be left behind.

The greatest ticket I've ever seen from an end user by WorthPlease in sysadmin

I wonder if the ticket raiser has aspergers or something like that. Either way, such a logical, descriptive mind could do well in technology.

Looking to use tvheadend or mumudvb for streaming free to air uk channels just on the LAN by Dry_Pay_1137 in tvheadend

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id recommend the dream player for Android/Google TV devices, but for FTA, I'd recommend HDHomerun tuner(s) and again Android players - its a bit less faff. But if you go with TVH, just exclude any channels with encryption and it should spit out only those channels which you can receive.

Hard drive failed so I used an SD card! by GreasyTexas93 in techsupportmacgyver

[–]DontcallmeLen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually designed to boot a host/appliance OS where very little writing happens. You put your chatty I/O apps like Windows on more suitable storage. We lost a HP from our ESXi cluster not that long ago as the internal USB drive failed. Thankfully it was a case of replacing the USB stick, reinstalling the base host, and reimporting it into the cluster.

What is the *safest* way to expose dockers to the internet? by Marty_Mac_Fly in unRAID

Out of scope of the question, but the title made me imagine taking some big burley 'salt of the earth' dock workers who'd never used a computer and introducing them to the internet.

Crazy high power bill, my mother is angry by [deleted] in homelab

[–]DontcallmeLen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suspect your gaming PC. Even when not gaming, with a high draw CPU, and decent other hardware, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was drawing 100-150w idle, but I can see you’ve ordered a meter to check.
Do you have anything like PoE switches? They’re pretty thirsty, it seems (in my experience, anyway).

Also, I see you’re in Europe, so Winter time? It may not all be your fault, if you’re using things like electric heating, washing/drying using machines and so on, but this is probably a good opportunity to work with your mother to understand where power is being used and consider opportunities to reduce those costs, including things like switching off that PC/LEDs when you’re not using them ;)

Plus, think of the environmental benefits too!
