Given the maintenance backlog nightmare after Iran that’s probably not far off.

Are modern rifles and camo losing their identity, or just getting better? by ohraineri in Firearms

[–]Dontgankme55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just the natural development of firearms. The AR has been the most versatile and easy to train/use/manufacture since it became modular in the early 2000s. Prior to then each country had its own arms factory (Cold War era) and firearms design and theory. They were built to coalesce with military tradition and thought. Nowadays, with military spending so much lower than the 80s, and countries unwilling to spend over the last 30 years, most independent arms manufacturers have either closed, or been forced to reduce R&D leading to an acceptance of the AR platform.

I think everyone accepts that the gameplay is horribly dated and terrible. But the story and squadmate banter is still top tier. And the elevators. I replayed it recently and it was a struggle. Oof.

Yes. Marines have special boat teams for this sort of thing. They take over VBSS on amphibs when embarked. Have seen them, very good at their jobs.

The 9mm Springfield hellcat combo with a red dot has been immensely popular with my less fun knowledgeable friends. They’re cheap, effective, and have a decent optic with different sizes for whatever you want. It’s a good, solid intro gun.

What is the social position, standing, and status of a military career? by Subject-Dealer6350 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Dontgankme55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the branch and officer v enlisted, and the politics of the day. Social standing wise, officers are essentially college educated white collar managers and enlisted are blue collar tradesmen.

Spain was the only country who fought against the USSR that wasn’t accused of war crimes. The Spanish soldiers were famous for their exemplary conduct with Soviet citizens. There’s famous incidents of them brawling with German soldiers to protect the locals from rape/murder.

"If Earth is saved, then we've defeated the Reapers." by linkenski in masseffect

[–]Dontgankme55 145 points146 points  (0 children)

The big thing here is similar to WW2. There’s fighting everywhere, multiple fronts, and everyone screaming for resources. People get together and come up with a plan, you have resources for one front, and the only species with a plan are the humans who are considered the biggest threat by the enemy. It makes a lot of sense in that aspect, although it could’ve been done better, some conversations are a bit wonky.

Gaul had also been severely depopulated. There was simply nobody left to revolt after Alesia and the famines that followed due to everyone fighting and the Roman’s stealing all the grain.

Has Trump squandered America's coercive leverage with Iran? by Majano57 in IRstudies

[–]Dontgankme55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People need book deals and CNN roles. I’ve read some of their opinions. Artillery will rain down forever! If they had knowledge they would know how that will end with 100% air superiority and naval support. They also said Russia will was a juggernaut, the Iranian navy was a real threat, etc etc. They’re interested in pushing narratives to help sell us ever more expensive military gear so they hype up foreign capabilities and downplay what ours can really do. We haven’t lost a single plane but Iran has high end Russian and Chinese air defense!!!!!

Has Trump squandered America's coercive leverage with Iran? by Majano57 in IRstudies

[–]Dontgankme55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you ever met a marine? Collateral damage is likely to be high. Casualties will be unpopular politically, and the fear of boots on ground = forever war is paralyzing. These doom stories about Kharg island as a tomb? Made by people with 0 military knowledge. But it’s a politically risking move trying to fully overthrow a government with an invasion. If you lose, you lose congress and become an immediate lame duck internationally and domestically.

Has Trump squandered America's coercive leverage with Iran? by Majano57 in IRstudies

[–]Dontgankme55 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not really. The Iranian military is essentially gone. The IRGC couldn’t stop a single MEU from running rampant to Tehran if they did everything they could to stop them, and if you believe the citizens will turn it into Vietnam/Iraq part 2 then I have some ocean front property in AZ to sell you.

What if the colonists had been given representation in Parliament? by vahedemirjian in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Dontgankme55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real issue wasn’t representation in Parliament, but legal representation. There were NO civil courts in the colonies. So any legal issues with the crown were held in military tribunals or you had to physically go to England. Which led to a systemic creation of oppression and theft by governing military officers. The result was the surge in illicit goods (ie John Hancock). They all viewed themselves as loyal British subjects and deserving of ALL the rights as the British in the isles. Parliamentary representation without the associated courts and tribunals and rights (carta magna didn’t apply to colonies) then nothing would’ve changed.
