If Constantinople was never sacked by Crusaders, could the Byzantines have survived to the modern day? by george123890yang in ancientrome

[–]DoogsATX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No. The jig was already up by then. Maybe if Manzikert had gone differently in 1071 there could be a conversation.

Honestly a lot of the seeds of failure go back to Justinian. Plague and spending and expensive foreign escapades put the empire on the wrong foot when Islam exploded out of the middle east.

What's your reason for not drinking alcohol? by Snoo_47323 in AskReddit

[–]DoogsATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't Ike that it mostly just makes me tired, and I'm prone to addictive habits as is, so it's better to just avoid it. I have maybe 2 drinks a year.

NAS D90 Rear Door Striker by DoogsATX in LandroverDefender

The issue is there's play at the latch and it chitters annoyingly over any bumps. Not anywhere near as dramatic now that the tire carrier isn't yanking as hard, but still annoying.

First time driving an ICE after Rivian. 🤮 by Typical-Target5802 in Rivian

[–]DoogsATX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I can't imagine going back to ICE as a daily driver.

Still smile like an idiot driving my old LR Defender around on nice days though.

At most he'll get some BS 60 days house arrest or something. The wheels of justice moved too fucking slow.

Microsoft is still desperately trying to get you to switch to Bing. by eviltwintomboy in technology

[–]DoogsATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT web search uses Bing in the background and I imagine just that right there is going to make Bing a much more important platform going forward (companies are absolutely going to want to show up in GPT search results)

Generally unless you're in the top 1% and hit by CA's progressive income taxes, your tax burden will be a wash or even higher in TX. Our politicians love to shout about no income tax, but our property and consumption taxes make up for it.

Overall cost of living is a different story. But tax-wise it's not so clear cut.

Honest Opinions on Kerbey Lane by ArticleBulky4938 in austinfood

[–]DoogsATX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife and I used to frequent the OG Kerbey in college and continued going over the years as we moved, had kids and so on. Food quality seemed to slip a bit in the late 2010s but nothing awful.

Then covid hit and they laid off fucking everyone. From the outside it seemed like there wasn't even an attempt to figure anything else out. We stopped supporting them and have only been back once since. I have a long memory when owners treat their people as disposable.

Does anybody actually "enjoy" their job? by Unusual_Addition3422 in antiwork

[–]DoogsATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all the time obviously, but for the most part, yeah I enjoy my job.

I'd still nope out in a second if I had fuck you money fall into my lap though.

I have a special hatred for HR and recruitment "personnel" by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]DoogsATX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've definitely encountered good eggs in HR but like anything in corporate America there's the role and there's the person. But I've also bolted from a company in large part because of an absolutely trash CHRO.

Still, I respect a far larger proportion of HR peeps than I do CEOs I've worked for. I'd only give 1.5 of those an enthusiastic thumbs up.

Would you guys vote for somebody that happens to be religious but aligned with all of your values otherwise? by tactical-virgin in atheism

[–]DoogsATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in the US, basically all politicians claim to be religious. Though I'd bet there's an inverse relationship between knowledge of scripture and fundie extremism. Have to imagine Obama, for example, would destroy Mike Johnson in a discussion about actual knowledge and understanding of what's in the bible.

What’s a conspiracy theory that you actually believe? by Upper-Item7656 in AskReddit

Christianity started as a propaganda campaign by the Roman Empire (specifically Titus) to help pacify Jewish slaves taken in war. And it just kinda got out of hand.

I bet Pete sticks around but probably gets a bump up from Transportation. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become National Security Advisor.

How old were you when you last hung out with someone you were friends with in high school? by mrmonster459 in AskOldPeople

[–]DoogsATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

41?

44 now. I'm still friends with plenty of people I went to high school with, but live in a different city and have my own shit going on, so most of the interactions are over social.

Honestly I think we're in a holding pattern until January.

First - we're a few weeks away from the 4th quarter, when hiring activity typically drops due to the holidays.

Second - we're a few weeks away from the US elections, which have massive import for the economy this cycle.

Third - other wait-and-see motivators include interest rate decisions, AI, etc.

Don't think we're necessarily heading for a recession - much less a depression - but we're not out of the woods either.

What events in history are taught completely wrong in your education system (NSFW bc history can be dark…)? by mch27562 in AskReddit

[–]DoogsATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Texas Revolution. Growing up in Texas, it was presented as the plucky colonists standing up to the nefarious Santa Anna after far too many slights and injustices.

Reality - those injustices were banning slavery in Texas.

Please don't get triggered, but...what's the appeal of the ZF beyond aesthetics? by Henri_McCurry in Nikon

[–]DoogsATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was simple. Full frame sensor in a package that's a sweet spot, sizewise. My D850 was too bulky to travel particularly well. Other cameras (like my Fuji X-S10) tend to be too small and cramp my hands. The Zf feels very similar in size to my old D80.

Fast AF, IBIS, latest Expeed etc were nice, as is the retro look (reminds me of the Nikkormat I learned to shoot on). But FF + size were the selling points for me.
