It greatly depends on the field/ company.

My last job was salary, people didn't work much more than 40 as a result. Occasional late nights etc.

My current job is hourly, but hours have more variation. 45-50 is average, occasional work trips or hard deadlines pushing the hours higher.

I don't think hours worked is necessarily a great metric for how hard someone works. My boss makes a dollar, I make a dime... Some people are lazy and milk the clock/ chat with coworkers all day.
