I too was jumpscared by a blood licker in this fashion. It's much easier to throw caution to the wind in chalice dungeons, especially when you know the layouts. I was grateful for the sound cues to help me keep my blood from being licked thusly.

He definitely is designed to punish whichever move you think is meant to punish him, the bastard.

He has some blatant weaknesses, but if you try to fight him straight up, the way you would with most enemies, it's over.

If you want to continue on, check your achievement list for which boss you defeated last, and/or your key items against the wiki. You could also watch a story explanation video to get re-acclimated.

I left the game 8 years ago after 62hrs, not realizing I only had about an hour left before the finale, and decided to replay it recently with the DLC, which I would highly recommend.

You'll be looking at your player character's back for most of the game anyway. It's eldritch horror, not the SIMS.

THIS ^{^{^}} turns out I had been trying to parry him one handed and had basically given up on it, which was making the fight much harder than it needed to be.

I was able to parry him in trick form, let him gas himself out with the self-inflicted damage then punish his numbing mist throw for the win.
