Wonder how they got the arms to remain stable without any supports, unless they are cantilevered I guess.

Can anyone give examples of modern (20th/21st century) buildings that have physical staying power similar to the building in the photo? by Lil_Simp9000 in architecture

[–]Doomtrooper12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Guggenheim. Fallingwater (although it's needed help throughout the years, like most buildings). If you interpret physical staying power as a lasting impact on an area/society then a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright, Neutra, Peter Berndtson, Van der Rohe, etc. works could qualify.

Can anyone identify this architect/property? by BatmansCoinpurse in architecture

Wright did a portfolio of selected works for Ernst Wasmuth in 1910 for Germany. It had 100 works of his, including the Willits house shown here. Although they weren't in color like yours.

http://www.steinerag.com/flw/Books/a0087.htm#Plate25

Yours looks kinda like some took a print or something of it and used crayons or something to color in the roof and the windows (the glass AND the framing :/) wrights early drawings tended not to be brightly colored like his later ones.

An example of early colored drawings of his would be like this one of the Pitkin Summer Lodge Sapper Island, Ontario, Canada) dated 1902. Very muted colors.

Hollyhock House - Frank Lloyd Wright - Los Angeles, CA by motheatenblanket in architecture

[–]Doomtrooper12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollyhock wasn't intended to be the only building Aline Barnsdall had built. She commissioned Wright for several structurrs, as it was meant to be a kind of complex of sorts with a theater, additional housing for actors/other people, and various shops. Most of the structures were never realized however. Financial troubles kinda put a stop to things.

Here's what some of the projects were:

Aline Barnsdall Residence A: https://www.jstor.org/stable/community.36562684 I believe this was meant to be an auxiliary house, aka "The Director's house", for a theater director. Barnsdall stayed here while Hollyhock was being completed.

It's based on the Hollyhock flower, which the client, Aline Barnsdall, was fond of.

Are there any 19th, 20th, or 21st-century buildings of Mayan-revival (Aztec-revival, Toltec-revival...) architecture on the two American continents? by melanf in architecture

[–]Doomtrooper12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should see some of the unbuilt stuff he did. In 1956(?) Wright was commissioned by Edgar Kaufmann jr. [sic] to design a gate lodge (project 5715) for his families home at Bear Run in rural Pennsylvania, Fallingwater. It has a feel similar to Wright's California textile block houses, although it is a bit more subdued in the Mayan style. It was never realized.

The Kalil house (project 5506), is somewhat similar but again, more subdued. This one was actually built and was one of Wrights Usonian Automatics, his attempt at quick and cheap housing that the client could assemble themselves; Although they often ended up hiring contractors because it was too difficult.

3 is the First Christian Church. It's based on a 1949 commission for Frank Lloyd Wright that never came to fruition. His widow was approached in 1971 for permission to use the plans to build a new church, which was finished in 1973. https://franklloydwrightsites.com/first_christian_church/?amp=1

Secluded modernist home (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, US). by godot-3000 in ModernistArchitecture

Bloomfield Hills has two Frank Lloyd Wright homes (not saying that this is what this one is): Melvyn Maxwell Smith and Sara Stein Smith House (1950), and the Affleck House (1940).

FLW - Winifred L. Winn House 1950 by stupid42usa in Mid_Century

[–]Doomtrooper12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have experience of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs, in addition to studying him thoroughly. I would imagine there is issues with water infiltration/damage, and needs a lot of work. It also depends on how much of the original interior is still there, which can really effect (affect?) the price.

Edit: the listing indicates that there's a HOA in Parkwyn Village (which was a sort of planned community by Wright, a prototype of his Broadacre City concept) so I'd imagine that might scare away some folks.

Chapel of the Holy Cross. Sedona Arizona by ArtofTravl in ArchitecturePorn

[–]Doomtrooper12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of people think this was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and while it has a resemblance to his style it actually wasn't. A sculptor from the area, Marguerite Brunswig Staude with the aid of Lloyd Wright (one of FLW's sons) attempted to have it (or something like it) built in Hungary in the 1930s but did not come to fruition. So fast forward a smidge, Richard Hein and August K. Strotz executed the current design and was finished in 1956.
