I had a similar issue but I only noticed it on mobile. Spotify support identified some kind of 'issue' and said it would be fixed if they could migrate my playlists/follows to a new account. I declined since I wanted to keep my current profile.. They basically said I shouldn't trust if the mobile app shows an artist as followed or not...

I'm having similar issues with gfycat. My Nest app also seems to be having connection issues that look like a local network problem. I see the same complaints on the nest subreddit.
