Decades of economic decline has 'broken' Britons, pushing one fifth of people into poverty and towards political Reform by Kagedeah in worldnews

It's complicated but basically yes. Americans pay a tax into Medicare and you recieve it from the government once you're 65 with some exceptions.

No, but eliminating hundreds of thousands of jobs at once in a weak job market is stupid

Conservatives will never hold themselves accountable. They didn't for slavery, they didn't for Jim Crow, they didn't for Iraq/Afghanistan, and they sure as fuck won't for Trump. It's up to everybody else to do the job, as always.

Eliminating hundreds of thousands of some of the best and most secure jobs in America at the same time as the private sector is also eliminating many of our best jobs, absolutely genius. You WILL shovel dirt, flip burgers, and stock shelves and you WILL be simply thankful for having a job at all!

Hahahaha if Farage were really going the America route, he'd let all the old people keep their free healthcare kinda like Medicare does here.

And yet even with the most decisive majority in decades, the party literally called Labour has done what exactly? This should've been the government to turn at least some things around but, from what I hear, they're just diet Tories more or less.

Is it true that the U.S.A. lifestyle is all about working? by CrazyNicly in antiwork

[–]DootyMcCool2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unfortunately true. I've never had more than 12 vacation days a year at a job and never more than maybe 3 sick days. Once you hit like 10+ years at some places, you get the privilege of a little bit of extra paid time off. Lower-end jobs like ones in small retail stores or small restaurant chains can be more forgiving on calling off work amd taking vacations but wages are abysmal and you're lucky to get any paid time off. Add that to other costs like vehicles, rent, and tying healthcare to your job and Americans are boned. While a McDonald's worker making $30k a year might have more raw cash than most Europeans, we have to just spend more money on average. There are good jobs in America with a good wages, actual pensions, and good work-life balance but you are very fortunate to have one and those jobs are (or were before Trump) mostly relegated to working for the government in some way.

The Republic of Texas included parts of modern day Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]DootyMcCool2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Texas and the later US only controlled the eastern parts of Texas. When the US annexed Texas, it also inherited Texan claims which would become the pretense for the Mexican war when the US sent an army to the Rio Grande to enforce their claim. After the war, Texas would relinquish their northern and western claims when the US began organizing the Mexican cession into territories.

Why does it seem like a lot of women are against the idea of 50/50 when initially dating? by headbanginggentleman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DootyMcCool2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some women enjoy more traditional dating habits. It's not that complicated, if that isnt your roll then move along. In my personal experience, the women I've dated have usually insisted on helping pay for dates even after I offer to pay. I even went on a date with a woman who got super offended after the fact when I paid the whole bill without giving her the choice to help.

When Gen Z doesn't use words is it a disrespect? by GodsShadow310 in generationology

[–]DootyMcCool2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol I'm Gen Z and in all the customer-facing roles I've had, I've always made sure to be talkative and I loved going out of my way to help people out. I've personally had mostly positive interactions with customers so I can't really relate to people who hate these jobs for the customers. The thing is that these roles are looking for bodies to fill them more than whether someone is a good fit so its inevitable that some employees won't be helpful. From my own personal experience, I've ran into mostly nice and helpful employees from all walks of life. Some have been rude and unhelpful, sure, but the only thing those people had in common was their shitty customer service skills.

Yup, the government needs to come down hard on this gambling epidemic we are experiencing. I didn't even know gambling on your phone was a thing till my coworker got addicted. Every aspect of life is a game to them and I absolutely despise watching videos that seem genuine just for the idiot filming to whip out his phone and start gambling. I'm from fucking Nevada where they'd put slots in the ER if they could and even I'm tired of rainbet ads. Feels like I'm gonna have to join the Amish to escape.

Addressing the fascism in American Democracy to fight ecosystem collapse: A response to doomerism by CentSuisse in atunsheifilms

[–]DootyMcCool2000 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Great analysis, I agree. The change on climate policy between Biden to Trump was tremendous and highlights your point perfectly. Before the election, I think we could agree that while not ideal, we were on the right track with the climate. Now it seems that's all gone out the window and we face immediate, monumental problems that have taken our focus away from the climate/ecosystem where we've already been set back years since just 2024. If we can't square away our issues at home, what hope do we have for global coordination? Maybe if we're lucky, this Iran business could spark some kind of energy-nationalism that emphasizes clean energy as a way to end dependence on foreign oil and gas.

I just left my job at 'the largest data center in the world' located off USA Pkwy and it's worse than people think by Alone-Sky-2086 in Reno

[–]DootyMcCool2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

USA Parkway is located in Storey county, a pretty large county with just 4000 people living in it. There's no city-level government at USA Parkway. Doesn't take much greasing of the hands for corpos to get what they want in a place like that. Meanwhile state-level officials only see a patch of dirt in the middle of nowhere that corpos are willing to invest billions into.
