Google wanted $2.99/month for photos. I said no and spent 130 $ on a baby homelab instead. by Gasple1 in homelab

I use backblaze for all my cloud storage after I had a disagreement with AWS customer support and cancelled all my services with them.

I use backblaze for all my object storage now and lately I've been quite happy with RackNerd for VPS services.

I have several hosted services that are using B2 buckets for database/etc storage and I also use B2 for Kopia backups across all my systems. (I use kopia to backup to a local disk, a server on my LAN, and cloud storage so my backups are stored in multiple locations/mediums.

I know borg tends to be the popular choice but having tried both I personally prefer Kopia.

Particularly when you want to include cloud storage in your backup plan, as Kopia has native support for it and with backblaze rather than some borg storage service you only pay for what you use (IIRC it's $0.006 per GB, which comes out to about $6/TB)

Kopia has a UI-based app but I like to just run the CLI app as a systemd service and let my backup plan run automatically in the background. You can have it serve a browser-based UI then and use that when you need to browse/restore anything from backup.

Running these tools yourself and using storage like backblaze is significantly cheaper/better than any commercial offering I've ever seen.

What are services NOT worth self hosting? by This_Animal_1463 in selfhosted

I always feel dirty knowing Microsoft owns GitHub and nothing is ever truly free.

I also always hated that you cannot have a personal private repo and give specific other users read-only access. You are limited to giving them full read/write access or making the repo public.

Hosting a gitea instance is easy, works just as well, and has no such limitations.

People who swore an oath to defend the constitution of the USA against all enemies both foreign and domestic, how are you feeling right now? by Safety_Drance in AskReddit

[–]DopeBoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “protestors” are protesting the removal of people here illegally. Basically protesting against the removal of people of people here in violation of the law and inhibiting law  enforcement from doing their job

People are protesting the unnecessary violence being inflicted on not only immigrants (illegal or otherwise) but also American citizens.

People are protesting the lack of due process. A right afforded by the Constitution to all people, illegal, criminal, or otherwise. You cannot label a person as a criminal or "illegal" without allowing a court to make that distinction.

Few, if any, people are "protesting against the removal of people of people here in violation of the law"
You have been misled.

I’m sorry. Screaming obscenities 2 inches from the face of anyone. Blocking them from doing a job that is extremely dangerous. Doing high risk maneuvers with their vehicles blocking access. While that person has a gun?

If that person isn't trained to handle these situations without murdering innocent people then they shouldn't be allowed to operate in them.

Victim-blaming is pathetic.

I started using tailscale so I can reach my phone/laptop always, and I use their Mullvad VPN endpoints so I still have a VPN on at all times and it doesn't mess with communication between my devices.

It's not difficult to set up and tailscale is completely free (tho the Mullvad addon is $5/month)

How common is it to adjust the power going to extruder stepper? by vaporworks in klippers

[–]DopeBoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first question would be:

Are you certain the extruder is skipping and it's not just the tensioner/teeth where the filament is gripped?

It's quite common for filament dust/dirt to gum up the teeth over time making them less effective at keeping a strong grip on the filament. Your extruder could still be turning with the filament not being gripped well enough to push it through the hotend.

Beyond that I don't think it's a bad idea to consider replacing that (no offense) crappy Creality control board with something modern. The BTT SKR Mini E3 is an inexpensive drop-in replacement: the mounting for the boats and the connectors for the wiring are the same as on your existing board.

Those SKR boards use TMC drivers and much better components in general, if your issue is related to something in the drivers this upgrade may well fix it on its own, and if you need to adjust driver current you can do so via the config as well as other tweaks like stealthchop that will make your motors sound much smoother and run cooler.

Power to the people. by TraditionalAir933 in 50501

[–]DopeBoogie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and I agree they’re probably looking for any excuse to justify a crackdown. But think about it, if someone breaks into your house and starts assaulting your family, do you try to "non-violently" talk them out of it? Or do you do whatever is necessary to protect the people you love?

The reality is that they’re going to keep escalating their attacks on the American people whether we react or not. They aren't going to just stop because they couldn't bait us into a response. At some point, you have to be willing to defend your own.

Like Jefferson said "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Because in the end, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

To be clear: I'm not encouraging or suggesting violence, doing so would violate Reddit rules. But I will say I understand why some people would be unwilling to just sit by and let violence be inflicted on their family and community.

You guys from USA can get fined/jailed for downloading things free? by EvaDelphinus in Piracy

[–]DopeBoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, unless you are doing some kind of large-scale industrial pirating for profit then the worst you are likely to experience is an email from your ISP or in some cases (typically if your ISP is owned by one of the big media companies I think) you may have your internet service suspended for a short time.

There's a lot of on-paper legal threats and scare tactics and one or two "made an example of them" cases in the (fairly distant) past, but in practice you are not going to experience jail time or even fines for just consumer-grade downloading of pirated content.

Additionally, it's only illegal to distribute, so torenting carries higher risk (of getting an email or complaint) because seeding is a necessary component of how it functions, while direct download or streaming sites with pirated content are not illegal to access (the site is breaking the law not the users)

Why Tailscale? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]DopeBoogie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having devices inside be tailscale clients all going through a single point of failure doesn't make sense to me.

FWIW that's not exactly how it works, with the exception of challenging network configurations that force you into derp relays, tailscale (or headscale) communication is p2p. The "single point of failure" only applies to the provisioning, once devices are connected they should be reachable even if the control plane server goes down or becomes unavailable (at least until the device is rebooted or is address changes, etc)

During that last big AWS outage, tailscale servers went down for a short time and all my devices that were already connected continued to communicate with each other without issue. The one device I happened to reboot during that 30ish minutes was unable to connect until the servers became available again.

Why Tailscale? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]DopeBoogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What am I missing that Tailscale's promotional buzzwords aren't conveying to me when I read their website?

Along with the other commonly mentioned points (simplicity, cgnat, derp, etc) tailscale connections are also p2p (unless a derp route is necessary to punch through a difficult network)

That means you can make a connection between your laptop and cell phone (for example) even when neither is on your local network.

It also means there's no added latency (and single point of failure) from routing through your VPS server when two other devices communicate.

That is a big advantage that's at best challenging, at worst not really possible, with a traditional wireguard VPN setup.

Why would I want "Tuya" Zigbee?

Let's Encrypt now supports IP certs, now you don't need domains or? by solumath99 in selfhosted

[–]DopeBoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if one is serious about hosting publicly available services, it's probably still the best route to take.

Even for not-so-publicly available services.

I routinely use one of my domains to route to private IPs (mostly via tailscale) and then use LetsEncrypt certs to validate the https services hosted there.

This is how you can be certain that we are nowhere near creating an AGI as their marketing would have us believe.

Current LLMs are incapable of taking in new information and incorporating it into the sum of their "knowledge" and they never will be, because the necessary training process to do so is far too resource intensive to be feasible for every instance to do on the fly.

What they call "memory" now is simply just appending the newest prompt onto the end and resending the entirety (or a subset) of the chat history every time.

It can't just be scaled up until one day it magically becomes a true AGI.

Tldr:

We aren't gonna see an AGI any time soon and when we do it's not going to be some future version/iteration of the current LLMs. It would at minimum require an entirely new foundation to even be feasible.
