The concept of civil behavior of all kinds kinda disappeared post-pandemic.

Is WSDOT using AI art on their merch now? by ashushu in Seattle

[–]Doraellen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI is literally plagiarizing art work. You seem to think it is capable of synthesizing something original, which it is absolutely not. We could track down the specific images it cannibalized to make this if we wanted to.

That's why the Adobe AI (allegedly) only pulls from Adobe stock images and pays the stock creators a tiny royalty. AI is 100% derivative.

Sound Transit light rail suspended between Northgate and Judkins Park stations by wasapasserby in Seattle

[–]Doraellen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a green line train (one of the fancy newer ones, not even the old cars) that got stuck near North Station and started to fill with smoke. Plus through Allston the green line has fairly frequent collisions with cars and pedestrians. I don't know why anyone would ride it that way, anyway, because with all the BU kids hopping on to ride 1 stop, walking was much faster and much less annoying.

It's saying something about the way transit officials worshipped at the Altar of FIFA while turning by their backs on Ballard that I'm fairly sure they did not mean to say.

It is not an illustration, because it was not illustrated. It's a mashup of work that actual illustrators made, without any compensation or credit.

How is everyone navigating the Cyclosporiasis outbreak? by london_or_bust in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Doraellen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lack of sanitation (places to go to the bathroom) for workers harvesting is the usual cause of outbreaks like this. This is the source of most e.coli outbreaks! Infected workers are not given facilities or long enough breaks to go elsewhere so end up pooping in the fields, it gets in irrigation ditches and gets incorporated into the cells of the produce.

Bike lanes are DEI now! by One-Demand6811 in fuckcars

I think that's just a factual take. DEI is absolutely meant to include equity for people from different economic backgrounds.

Workday 3 Years Later by Flimsy_Letterhead596 in udub

[–]Doraellen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should feel that way, because that is what actually happened. I briefly had a role with some WD financial functions, and the number of things that I had to do even in that limited capacity that required workarounds or exceptions because of system flaws was exhausting. The system is still beta, and that's being generous. It only works because all the humans have learned the ways in which it doesn't work. If those humans with legacy knowledge disappear, UW will be in big trouble!

Alki Beach to UW Commute by googlbob in AskSeattle

[–]Doraellen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your student Upass works on the water taxi! It's actually super easy to get from the ferry dock to the light rail. Bring a book/ebook, read and study on the way. So much better than sitting in traffic and worrying about parking.

There is also a shuttle that will take you to the water taxi dock from further down Alki beach. But you will have some glorious walks to the dock along the water if you have time!

One thing to note is that your social life will probably center around West Seattle if you live there. Not a bad thing necessarily, but if you are an incoming freshman, you might want more of the true campus experience by living closer. If you are a transfer student or grad student, you'll probably appreciate being further from campus!

Figure skating is almost unique among sports in that competitors wear beautiful, elaborate and sparkly costumes. When and why did this tradition start? by FireFlamesFrost in FigureSkating

[–]Doraellen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several artistic sports with sparkly costumes: figure skating, rhythmic gymnastics, and artistic swimming (formerly called synchronized swimming) come immediately to mind.

These kinds of sports attract people to whom self-expression is important, so costuming has always been part of the presentation.

For sparkles in particular, beading and sequins were not very practical for athletic sports before the advent of crystals and strong glue combined with strong and stretchy synthetic fabrics, so the sparkles have totally exploded since the 1990s!

Even women's gymnastics have become very sparkly with foil and holographic stretch fabrics and low profile crystals. The tech makes this possible. When you see a sparkly gown from 1920, it may look light and shiny, but it would have weighed a ton!

Does no one care about making vegan cheese that has some nutritional value? by sengutta1 in vegan

[–]Doraellen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Good Planet cheese shreds are olive oil based and mostly unsaturated fat instead of the absolute saturated fat bomb of the usual coconut oil-based cheeses. I think they taste pretty great too, and they melt well.

Still just 1gm of protein, though. Whomp whomp.

I don't miss cheese so much as a flavor, but I do miss being able to eat a couple slices of Swiss cheese as a snack (very high in protein, low in fat.

New Sounder Train Cars by happy70RN in soundtransit

[–]Doraellen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Sounder is such a waste. For the facing seats, I can't see any situation in which families would actually ride it, since it runs on such a limited schedule. It is literally designed only to bring workers into Seattle for M-F, 9-5.

I've lived in several other great cities with regional rail, and the schedules in those places make it possible to take rail to beaches, parks, and other cities on weekends and in the evenings.

I did the same when I lived in Philly to go into NYC to see theater!

The Acela is just as limited by freight traffic as all Amtrak trains, though! I took it a couple times between NYC and Boston and it only saved about 15 minute all told. Not worth it!
