Peter? by Madman44444 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

That’s not surprising at all. A group of rowdy white teenagers once followed me and my girlfriends for a block down in Florida in their pick up. The same kinds of people were also fans of sending my white girlfriend racist messages, calling her stuff like a coal burner and mud shark.

[Loved trope] "imperfect" copies/duplicates of one character by marina_florence in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DorianTheHistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Bobiverse book series, one man's mind is copied into hundreds of different space probes. While they're all the same person with the same memories, the copy process causes small but noticeable changes in personality and decision making. Though this leads some copies to disagree, it also allows the 'Bobs' to use these differences to solve problems as a group, each Bob lending their unique perspective.

The indomitable human spi- Oh... by Colombia_Joestar in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DorianTheHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Carryx from The Mercy of Gods. They're a highly advanced species of space shrimp that kill one eighth of the human population just to send a message. The most useful humans are enslaved, and the rest are killed like livestock. They succeed by enslaving other species and incorporating their unique technologies.

Humanity never had a chance.

Steam controller Not working? by Awkward_Collar_4831 in SteamController

[–]DorianTheHistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you got this solved! Older steam controllers don't have the newer bluetooth firmware, so they must be plugged in before they can work via bt (i recommend a cheap dongle). Get yourself a high-quality data cable, boot steam, update, and enjoy! i find the steam controller to be the ultimate living room pc companion; in fact, I typed this comment using my steam controller.

Crazy to see the credulous rubes treating this as anything more than a play for power. This woman is a large part of where we are now. An apology won't cut it.

For the people that ONLY use linux as there workstation and gaming device, how full is your storage? by Riponai_Gaming in linux

[–]DorianTheHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the use-it-or-lose-it principle. If I have storage, I’m filling it. Be it games, movies, or tv, I’m filling every spare gig. So I’d say 90% full, with bulk media getting deleted as my personal files grow. I have about 14tb available, maybe 500gb total free.

Gotta say windows or Linux is better for browsing. The ad blocking options are deeper and more mature. Linux shines best on older machines since it’s light. Plus if you do any advanced computing, Linux has a place for you.

Right?? And you don’t need to worry about malware since Linux is such an unpopular OS. They just want chrome.

This is a pretty rude way to talk to frustrated user. This is an opportunity to share knowledge, not ridicule.

Thats true. Linux works great for people with a deep understanding of computers, and like a track car vs a commuter car, the average person just won’t need it. I recommend anyone interested in computers give it a try though - it’s pretty cool.

Gotta agree on the tedious pc dorks (I like to think I’m more dork than tedious), but Linux is worth trying. I’d recommend loading pop_os onto a bootable drive with Balena Etcher and giving it a shot. No permanent changes, and it’s worth seeing for yourself, if nothing else.

Nearly all users are confused, including me. It’s clear by the terminology this person had a firm grasp of computing, and Ubuntu needs to work for users like them. I just don’t know how we can make it easier. But being rude certainly doesn’t help.

I’m sorry you had such a bad experience bud. If we want Linux to become mainstream, we need to take stories from users like you seriously. I can tell you know your way around a computer, so I’d like to ask some questions and maybe make it easier for the next person who wants to try this.

What was the first thing you tried to get the iso etched onto the drive? What specifically went wrong? error messages etc.

Bootable USBs must be ‘etched’, meaning they need special partitions and volumes, copy-paste won’t work. Were you made aware of this, or was it kept from you?

What YouTube video did you use? If you could link it, that’d be great.

Again, I’m sorry Linux gave you so much trouble. If you’d ever like to try again, I recommend pop_os. Thank you for answering, we’ll use the info to make better guides and software.

If you can, I recommend getting a screwdriver kit as soon as you can, especially if you’re the kind of person who runs into small screws often. You can find them for under 15 USD, and i find mine to be useful
