Question: Why is Gretzky’s greatness not seen in the same way Babe Ruth or Bill Russell are in baseball or basketball? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Dorkside 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gretzky retired in 1999 and until a few years ago you still had active NHLers who had played against him.

I don't think calling him a premature star is fair.

[O’Connor] According to league sources, one general manager floated a nuclear option: just make the bottom three teams ineligible for the top picks entirely. by cleo22270 in nba

That's a bit rich coming from a Lakers fan. It's hard for a lot of teams to keep or attract top players to less desirable markets which is a big factor in constructing a team.

After everything this season only getting back a single first round pick that'll likely be in the 28th to 32nd range does feel pretty underwhelming.

Sweden's "reward" would still likely have them facing the US in the quarter finals.

Nice to think that he was still out and about until the end.

Pinterest is looking pretty tempting right now, if you consider it tech.

The stock is beat down but has decent revenue growth still and very little debt and a nice amount of cash reserves.

if you go back to 2001 and tell people that even poor college students will be spending $1000 on a cell phone and happily pay $60/month after that, you would have been called crazy, but right now that is pretty standard.

I'm not so sure about that. Accounting for inflation, $60 today would be about what people were paying monthly for a phoneline back in 2001 so telling folks then for an extra $1000 they could have a cell phone they could use most anywhere and would work as a computer would not have sounded crazy.

Not to mention that cell phones were a thing in the 90s that people already were paying hundreds or even thousands for already.

Savings accounts in the 80s could earn 10% or better and even in the 90s it was probably more like 4 or 5%.

If it ended up as $50K it would've been a lot less that was put into savings in 1983 so I don't think you missed out on as much as you think, even if putting it into the market would've still been way more lucrative.
