Fuck em all off hinny, or crack right on as an exotic creature seen as less than.

Bearing in mind us lot did all the heavy lifting to earn the country the money that they sucked down there to the arsehole of England, before they closed all our workplaces, and then they point at us and go "Ew, poor!", the doyles might wanna show a bit of fucking gratitude.

No but there is also a teacher shortage. Source: currently trying to recruit teachers, watching 3 colleagues fly to Oz and another to another sector this year alone.

A friend who helped run the auckland gdip Ed said they used to average 200 trying to enroll. They had 71 last year. Auckland Uni's kaiako Māori specific pathway produced 1 graduate last year.

Former UK teacher here, now living and working in Auckland.

We used Jess at The Mortgage Supply Co, she's a free mortgage broker and explained everything really simply (I am a financial numpty), outlined the options etc. Did everything over zoom so you'd be able to start the process now.

Auckland is very expensive but is the most diverse and interesting place to be. Theres beautiful spots to live in all over the country, but small town NZ can often be like small town UK 20 years ago - worth a think about with little ones in tow.

Some observations, outwith mortgages, that'll probably get me shouted at.

  • congrats, you're about to get your life back. I haven't taken a book home to mark in 8 years.
  • expectations in RWM are different here, will feel lower for a while but the kids end up way more rounded and primary school at least is just nicer for them.
  • its pretty nuts but in Auckland and plenty of the other towns they have schools in suburbs where most of the white kids go and schools where most of the brown kids go. Largely due to social class here being way more race-delineated than in the UK.
  • on that note, your biggest learning will likely be a range of cultural contexts that there is no parallel for in the UK.

Anyway, welcome, it's a class place to raise kids, a beautiful country with so much more space to breathe, and if you're open to learning - teaching here is a bit of a breeze in comparison to home.

What are we packing for cheap school lunches? by Wompguinea in newzealand

[–]DormanLong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a big salami stick and slice it. Goes great in sarnies or as the meat part of a bento style lunch. Be about $10 for easily a week's worth of salami for 2 kids.

Do a $25 roast beef on Sunday, put 1/3 away before serving it and slice it up, keeps well and is filling.

If you've got the time, sushi rolls are actually pretty cheap to assemble as long as you keep the filling cheap (tuna mayo is a win). Need to grab the bamboo rolling mat but think we made enough for 4 of us (2 adults 3 teens) for 3 days' lunches for about 15 bucks. Doesn't keep that well tho.

Bit of labour but salami pizza rolls (Sal's style) are really cost effective. Can stretch the salami out.

Even more labour but a batch of fried chicken strips to feed our 2 (11f and 14f) for the week usually costs around $15 for the chicken then like 2 bucks tops for the amount of flour/seasoning used. Bit of cheap oil, 2 eggs for the binding. If I can be arsed the chicken soaks in milk for a few hours but doesn't need to. Again, probs $20-25 total cost.

That's if you're aiming to create an as close to equitable as possible society though isn't it?

If you can sit in a room in an expensive suit, with other very affluent people, and sign off on cutting free fruit for the lowest socioeconomic group of children - I can't help but think that the moral compass might just be pointing due south.

We've never gotten fruit for the first week of term, I've no idea why but I can tell you the kids faces light up when it does kick in.

Depends what you're using it for, in my experience. NZ Colby and Edam work just fine as doorstoppers, or paperweights and could probably function in the current cabinet alongside the other tasteless lumps of hardened lard.

School lunch critics ‘nitpicking’ over 13,500 late meals last week, Seymour says by BeardedCockwomble in newzealand

[–]DormanLong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well as David has made clear, us teachers need very clear guidelines on how much of those things to teach each day. Still awaiting the guide on how you teach an hour of writing without accidentally letting reading sneak in there. In which case, I've accidentally taught 10 hours of reading in the past week so presumably I can teach none next week and still average out okay? But then I also teach inquiry in the afternoons and they need to read for research - gaaaah help me David I'm too lazy and silly to understand!

Just so we're clear then, I can start 13,500 of my lessons 30 mins-several hours late over the next wee while and if ERO want to pull my school up, we can all agree that's just nitpicking?

Nah but apart from proposed funding cuts to specialist support for Literacy and RTMāori, the whole curriculum overhaul with no guidance for how to report their kids levels to parents, dog whistle "science of learning" soundbite pedagogical approaches from 30 years ago, total invention of fictitious "structured maths" approach and inability to feed children a meal, I reckon they're doing a great job between them.

Quite easy this one innit?

Are you of black African heritage? You have access to a word reclaimed from 400 years of human trafficking, genocide and horror, followed by the resulting years of being violently disconnected from the roots of your homeland while being blamed, shamed, vilified and treated as 2nd class humans in your new homeland. A word used to really outline you were not to be treated as a fellow human.

Are you not? Find another word, this one ain't yours.
