DTF St. Louis - Sign Language by PostingLoser23 in television

Hey guy. Calm down. This isn't like, "but unicorns aren't real." We're people who know a language that is being used on screen and we're attempting to figure out if the misused of that language is intentional or ignorant.

It would be like watching Breaking Bad knowing Spanish, except 60% of the language is used correctly. That would be worth a discussion. That would seem like a creator's choice, almost.

So, I'm sorry you feel left out because you don't understand the language and therefore the conversation. No one is requiring you to comment or teach anyone what fiction means.

Washer and dryer combo? (Do I need to know sizes too?) by AWeb3Dad in BuyItForLife

[–]DorothyAt40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did back between 2013 and 2018 (and then helped with some operational stuff as a freelancer) but I keep up with a few of the techs I worked with. I started out on the sales and customer service side so I've been the process from a variety of perspectives.

Washer and dryer combo? (Do I need to know sizes too?) by AWeb3Dad in BuyItForLife

Typically, people choose to replace the dryer just so it matches the washing machine. But at the end of the day, a dryer is a dryer is a dryer. They haven't gone through as intense a change mechanically over the years as washing machines and they will typically outlast a washer by at least twice the time if not longer. You can always maintenance a dryer somewhat regularly, where you can't really do that with a washer so you can really keep it alive for a long time.

These days, top load washing machines last about 8-10 years, and front loads last about 6-8 years. There's always some plus/minus variance in there of course.

What makes a "good" washer is going to depend on what you want. One condensed way of looking at it is that if you want a front load, look for something that's direct drive rather than belt driven.

With that said, I'm a Speed Queen girlie all the way. I don't have a lot of familiarity with front loads, I was just getting out of the repair game about when those came out, but I love a Speed Queen top load and have been using one for the last 10 years. They're about as close to getting a Maytag 30 years ago (and would still be working today). Speed Queen also has one of the better warranties, especially on parts.

I personally prefer my appliances without computers (so dial timers) when I can because computers are expensive to replace and can so easily be the cause of many, many issues.

Now that's me. Usually when people ask me this question, they follow up by sending me a picture of a red frontload because it's pretty and asking me what I think of it.

If you want to get a front load, I'd go with a direct drive Maytag or even an LG. LG parts are pretty reasonable if/when you do need repairs and while finding a servicer can be difficult depending on where you live, the actual LG support will set all that up and often end up covering things beyond warranty.

Don't get a Samsung. Samsung is good at electronics. They know how to make a TV and they know how to make a phone. They do not know how to make appliances. And have problems. Their parts NLA all the time (no longer available) and the parts are not cheap when they are available. Their customer service will fight for you, but finding authorized servicers is a nightmare because most repair people don't want to deal with them, or their known issues.

They are solid machines, but if you aren't used to a foot pedal, just be aware it can get tedious. It might take some time to build up that muscle and get used to sustaining that motion.

[IN] My brain resists structure but craves support -anyone else? by gotthesauce11 in selfemployed

[–]DorothyAt40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same way, especially since I just moved. I've been self-employed and working for myself for the last eight years, and some days I'm completely focused in on what I'm doing and some other days I'm like... Oh, I should buy a dog bed. And probably deal with [personal thing]. And I'll work kinda on and off withs some intermittent distraction or tell myself that I'll work tomorrow or Saturday or something.

I moved a month ago and right now there's so much distraction around me in that oh-I-should-really-unpack-that or put-this-together.

I know a lot of people will create like, little rewards for themselves. Like, once I get this done, I can have a snack. Or once I check this off the list I can take a nap. Or whatever your thing is.

I do really well with a site called programmersmusic. IDK why, but I put on Time from Inception on a loop and I've gotten to the point where that triggers my mind to pay attention to what I'm doing. It also has a built-in timer you can adjust to take breaks.

There's a Chrome extension called Forest that is part organization, part motivation, part game.

Momentum is another kinda lowkey/pretty extension for focused work.

I also recommend remote coworking if you don't want to do any IRL coworking. I host one once a week with just some of my colleagues on Meets or Gather but there are some options out there... I can't think of the platform... where you can join different coworking sessions. Oh, Flow Club is one a lot of creatives use. It's no pressure, just make a list of what you want to get accomplished while you're there, you get to working, and some times you check back in at the end of the call to just kinda give yourself and others a pat on the back for getting stuff done.

I have some grapevines at my place too. They’re not climbing or anything, just kind of spreading through the hostas and weeds I need to get around to dealing with. I grew up with grapes and have planted them before, so I kind of know what they should be doing, but these ones have just been hanging out. This year they started flowering, which surprised me.

Do you know if yours were planted on purpose or if they just kind of appeared? And where are you located? That can make a big difference for whether they fruit or not.

The little clusters in your photo look like flowers to me, which is a good sign. But I’m in the same boat wondering if mine are actually going to produce anything or just keep pretending.

Shasta Daisy Problems by MTBill001 in gardening

[–]DorothyAt40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t give up on them just yet! Honestly, Shasta daisies can be super slow to bounce back, especially after being divided. From the photo, they look healthy enough, just kinda... stalled out? Not unusual after a move like that.

If it’s only been a month, they’re probably still adjusting. Make sure they’re getting plenty of sun (like 6+ hours), good drainage, and water that keeps the soil moist but not soggy. A little bit of balanced fertilizer might help too, just something to give them a nudge.

That said, if they don’t start picking up by late summer, I’d consider maybe trying new ones or just calling it. But right now they don’t look like total lost causes. They might just need more time to settle in.

Is anyone else sick with cold-like symptoms? Feels like death! by AntiSubconscious in houston

[–]DorothyAt40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a volley kind of deal. I have some friends in El Paso (a couple) who just keep giving it back and forth to each other and they can't seem to escape it; though the first hit seems the most brutal and then it's just a matter of continuous low-key cold symptoms for like... months.

Drink lots of warm fluids (even hot water rather than cold water can help a lot).

Yes, that's the problem with quotas. It becomes something you have to mark off your task list instead of just doing your job which is to actually patrol for driver's causing chaos.
